I skated 8s for a long time until I had no other board than an 8.25. I skated the 8.25 and loved it. Then I had to skate an 8.5 and loved it even more. It's more wood to land on and easier to control, imo.

Ha, I skate street on a 9 x 33 with 15" an inch wheelbase. Mind you, ex-rugby player who's 6'4" and 240lbs (when I'm watching my figure). Having boards that are lighter, stronger, but also provide stability has kept me skating. It cracks me up to see the reactions to my board, but anytime I go back to an older size or smaller wheelbase, feels like a tooth pick. Shecks just got a new customer is what I'm saying.

It's funny to hear Chris trip out on what he thinks is a "big board," I skate a 9.5x35 with a 17.5" wheelbase. Longer wheelbases are where it's at when you're a taller guy! I'm only 6'1 tho

Dude, Ryan Shekler had a Grind King ad doing a kick flip on flatground when he was like 4, maybe 6 years old. That's like an adult learning kick flips on a longboard. Him using a 9 inch setup on street is nothing. A lot of people were too big for the popsicle sticks, and skaters are finally figuring out that the best setups match your height and shoe size. The ratio between your board and your size is important.

Mad respect for to any adult riding a 7.75 or anything under an 8! Because after childhood that’s a challenge!🤣
@RatSewage

I was always 7.75 until a couple years ago I couldn't find one so I tried an 8. Ended up assimilating to that and dug that for a while but recently grabbed an 8.25 twin tail for the symmetry. After a few days of skating on it I got used to that and it's nice to have more stability and surface area to land on. Now I have an 8.75 egg coming in the mail and I'm kinda stoked to try it out because I think the narrow tips and wide center are going to be advantageous. I have avoided shaped decks because I like primo tricks but I've been moving away from that anyway so it's time to try something new. I wear a size 8 shoe (US) for anyone curious which means I don't think going any bigger than that egg will benefit me.

Makes sense been saying for years idk how people with size 11 shoes skate size 8 deck or 8.5 even. I got 11.5 shoes and my feet hang off too much so I need 8.66,8.75,8.8,9 inch decks and i use 54 mm wheels. Makes just skating easier less worry about foot falling off or heels or toes scraping on coping.
@timburrow2996
@timburrow2996 Жыл бұрын
Right there with you .11.5 shoe and I can do 8.5 board if it’s a full shape but my main board is an 8.625 with Indy 159ers and 55mm wheels. So just a smidge bigger than most people’s normal 8.5, 149s and 54mm wheels.

I wear a size 12/13 and used to skate 8's... I even had a phase of 7.75... this was when 7.5 and even 7.25 was common and I was the odd one picking up an 8 or 8.25

I'm early 90s. As a 16-17 yo kid, we skated close to 9' already. My footing are way confortable and I skate better with that size. 8.25 down are just too small for my footings. I recently got back to 8.9 and I identfy more with this size. We didnt have this at the time. We had to "put up" with what was available. These multi-shapes boards came way later. I guess it depends how you were wired. So I can see where Ryan is coming from. I'm only 5.11.
@h.c4898
@h.c4898 Жыл бұрын
@gardenstatePR 88'-92' it was more about the double tails and smalller wheels. I quit in 92'. From what I get from the comments, board size got smaller after 95'. I quit in 92' I lost touch with the industry. I would say boards got smaller because of the high demand amongst skaters at the time and maybe because of younger kids (age range 8 to 15) got into it more. This shift was needed to fit that population body size thus there was a huge adoption. I'm just guessing from that point on. You gotta ask the OGs who were there all along Hawk, Koston, (I'm a year older than he is) Daewon etc... they probably know more as to what happened as to why board sizes got smaller.

as an avid 9 skater. we need more. we are all movin away from the tradition and getting bigger boards that fit out leg length and shoe size. my only gripe is 9's are super hard to come by. 8.75 are so common now, we are getting there but man i wish a company would specialize in bigger boards and not just for curb slayers

Skateboarding has all these bullshit rules. Break every single one i say. Skate 10 different board. Have boards for dofferent purposes. Have shoes for different purposes. Have dozens of pairs of shoes and boards and gear, not just one. I have different shoes i wear when im practicing, filming, not skating... practice boards, boards you dont skate often to keep nice. Have a bunch of nice stuff all at once. Its better than skating the same beat board over and over again on the same beat shoes. I did that when i was a kid. Now im 22. Its time to have mad gear and shit like i always wanted as a kid.

I concur! As I’ve gotten older (34 now) I setup shit whenever I want to try new products and keep things fun. Id say I have about 8 setups. Only 3 stay in the car though the rest are just fun shit to rip my neighborhood or whatever. I like to have a “main” popsicle board, a small zip zinger type setup, a massive cruiser with giant wheels, a regular sized cruiser, a transition board etc….😁

This topic is the BIGGEST in skateboarding now! People only use skinny boards to do flip tricks because they r light... Well, enter my setup: Heroin Holo Egg 9.4 with ace af177 hollow, Modus Titanium bearings, 58mm dragon formula wheels, titanium axle and kingpin nuts, and mounting hardware. Remember snowboarding didn't become a reality until ski technology started taking advantage of modern polymers. Skateboarding will continue to do the same and 9"+ boards will continue to be the norm
