The summer heat is here already and my lawn is in need of some fertilizer. After the spring flush of growth happens on cool season lawns, a dose of fertilizer helps to give the lawn some nutrients before a stressful time of less than ideal temperatures coming up. Today I talk about what fertilizers you can use, why potassium is important, and also a quick tip on fertilizer spills.

Really like you have a good eye for when to apply product, theres a good balance between pre-empting the need for fert, the weather conditions and general experience to get it right. It's something you cant write down in a guide, but something you pick up over time and that's what the great results are about!

I forgot to mention. I had planned to get started this spring, but I also live in the north and have been struggling with the crazy cold spring and random rains. I only got to detach, apply malorganite, some weed and feed and hosed on some weed b gone clover (hose). Was hard and got harder because of the constant winds and cold temps. Lawn looks better but I still have a lot of trouble spots that I was hoping to have filled/leveled before the summer heat. This is good though because I am learning more than what I knew when I got started and can avoid mistakes I would have made. I am learning the joys of lawn care. 😆

Yea, this has been one of the harder springs to get through in recent memory. The turf was really struggling this year with the unusually cold spring and multiple late frosts (it snowed in Mid-May in central Jersey which is bizarre). Now we are in the middle of Summer heat.. Due to the weather fluctuations, I'm just starting to get down the first fertilizer apps, but I'm way behind where I would be in a typical year... just in time for us to get bombed with heat and humidity. 🤨

Hey Ryan, I'm here in Ohio and I just did a Anderson's pre-emergent / fertilizer application about 5 weeks ago along with the simple lawn solution humic and fulvic acid application. I recently picked up four bags of malorganite for the first time and thought it would be a good option with the summer heat setting in. I know it contains a low nitrogen count. I have not done a soil test and after watching this video I realized it would probably be a good idea. I have a brand new home that was built about two and a half years ago and this is the first year after putting down about 200 lb of grass seed that I've actually had a full lush green fescue lawn. Is there anything else you would suggest to add with my malorganite application?

Crazy Year for Sure!!! I agree I am not so sure about any high doses of fert either. In Upstate NY I am seeing almost fully dormant KBG/RYE lawns right now. We had a heat wave last week (maybe week before sorry Covid-19 Brian) 3 days in the 90's. Now as I write this it was 41 for the low 58 high on Sunday, then Wed, Thurs, Friday again in upper 80's today 89, all with very little rain. It really is a Freaky year all together some much going on in the world and even Mother Nature is a bit messed up!. Ryan, 1st off love your videos, great information, not too technical and high production value. I have a lot that I had been building up with fill for 6 years, got it shaped with top soil and hydro seeded in the fall last year. I overseeded about 4 weeks ago. I fertilized (starter fertilizer for new seed) about 2 weeks ago. I now see a pattern of darker green lines in the lawn, otherwise lawn looks good. I used a Scott's edgeguard broadcast spreader, used the bag # setting and lined up the "throw" to the wheel marks of the other pass. I am wondering 2 things: 1) does this pattern tell me that the lawn wants more nitrogen? 2) can I apply a typical high nitrogen fertilizer that soon after?

You could have dollar spot. I saw some yards get it after the rain and humidity we got. It could be from you watering the lawn too often.. The lawn could be under-fed.. Fertilizer will help the lawn grow out of it. Or apply a fungicide. Of course, without seeing the lawn, dollar spot may not be the issue at all. Just a thought.

Glad I put down milo, root hume and some grub control last Tuesday here in NY. Not sure what it is but my reseed lawn is starting to get some weird burnt looking/fungus spots. Threw down some Scott’s disease ex Monday cause closer to soil it had this spider web look to it. Any idea what could of caused this Ryan?
@gary4738
@gary4738 4 жыл бұрын
That “web” in the lawn could be the beginning of dollar spot fungus. Good news is that it will eventually go away although it may take all season. I had it and I hated it. Didn’t do any damage to the lawn but looks terrible. I tried Disease X but didn’t work for me.

Gary Piazza Awesome, it is very strange cause never seen it in the lawn and the spots that have it don’t have that lush thickness to the grass. Hopefully the reseeded lawn makes it thru the summer.

I have a mix of Kentucky blue and some rye grass. I sprayed some tenacity mixed with speed zone and some of the grass blades have turned white. Will fertilizer bring it back to life?

Out of curiosity......why do so many of these lawn care crazies (myself included) put so much time and effort to making the grass green but not put in irrigation? There is already so much money spent on products to make your lawn look it's best. Why not save yourself so much time in watering and do it right? Your lawn is looking fantastic by the way. Just my thoughts :)

I’ve seen so many people talking about spraying their fertilizer because the plant absorbs it so much better. But it just didn’t work for me. I used a gallon of water per 1000 square feet and mix everything up in a bucket. However when I went to spray the Milorganite kept getting gummed up in my sprayer. Should I use less than 13 pounds per thousand when I spray?

I'm new to lawn care.. i thought we wern't suppose to fertilize in the summer for cool-season? Just mostly fall and a little in the spring? Can someone explain ? Wont the fertilizer be hard to utilize with the hot summer? Could possibly burn it ? TIA
@GirLzLawn
@GirLzLawn 3 жыл бұрын
You can definitely fertilize in the summer. Just chose something with a lower nitrogen analysis and good potassium, unless your lawn is already excessively high in any of those.
