Thanks so much for the video, I live in southern ontario Canada, now that we are in the 50 degrees area,it's time fix this mangle lawn. First going rake entire lawn still lots of leaves from last fall. Next should I put down some black earth then use 3 in 1 seeding? Also I see areas of green moss,should I just leave it.

2 methods I use to combat worm castings. I use a dew whip like they use on the golf course that works great and my other method, the one I really like especially on the day I’m mowing is drag a wide head soft bristle broom. It knocks down the castings, gets the dew off and helps stand up the grass. The other great thing about getting the dew off helps with preventing any fungus issues.

My fescue stayed quite green all winter. We did have a very mild winter with only one significant snowfall, but at most, I'd say it's 10% brown, which is very good. The big change this year was to do a final fert with a granular that is heavy in micronutrients. I really helped. I'm just about due for the second mow only because the lawn is waking up earlier and cooler than normal. I'm expecting a very productive growing season this spring.

Great vid Ryan. Teaseed works very well, in the UK there are a couple of products available. I apply once in spring and once in autumn. In between (I try not to eradicate them) I clear the casts using an afro comb, go under the cast, lift up and throw the cast or collect it. Combs are super cheap online and they allow the grass blades to pass through. Turfsolv is another good product.

We had such a bad case of snow mold this early spring. Both gray and pink, and almost our ENTIRE front lawn, and didnt do anything different than other fall prep years. We just went through a week of high 70's-mid 80's with rain and thunderstorms at night, so all the grass and tree buds are POPPING right now. I raked and reseeded about 3 weeks ago when it was still mid 50's, but the front lawn is still a struggle. UHG.

Ryan, love your channel, keep up the great work. I have a question that I hope you can take the time to answer. I put in a lot of work last fall to improve my lawn. This included a low cut, dethatch, core aeration, top dress, and overseeding. I almost freaked out after the top dressing as not much grass was showing anymore and it looked like all dirt, but with enough patience, the grass poked through and the new grass started. I mowed it a few times before the season ended and applied a fall scotts fertilizer (I live close to Detroit Michigan) as I do every year before our harsh winter season. It was very rewarding seeing how good it looked late last fall and that my hard work payed off. My question is, considering the overseeding in the fall, can/ should I apply my scotts turf builder with halts crabgrass preventer preemergent in the spring (my typical spring routine), or should I avoid preemergents incase there are still seeds germinating and the ones that have, are still very young. I don't want to waste all this hard work and kill or impede the grown that started so well in the fall. If it's ok to use, when should it be applied? If it's not ok to use, should I just spot treat weeds as they come in the spring/ summer using my liquid weed-be-gone? I also sodded a really stubborn small shaded area at the same time in the fall, but the sod is now (spring) much yellower and I bit thinned out. Is there a way to really green up the sod to match the neighboring green grass? Can I do something like spraying on miracle grow, or should I top dress and overseed it? Thanks in advance!
@ryanknorrlawncare3 жыл бұрын
If you have good coverage and you don't think you have open soil anywhere for weeds to come into then you could consider not using a pre-emergent but also as long as it's looking good and coming out of winter strong, then using it should also be fine. The sod likely does not have the same established root system as your other grass so it will take some time.

I had to hit some major bare spots with seed across my front and back lawn this spring. I used a starter Fertilizer with Mesotrione to hopefully suppress an outbreak of weeds. To your point in this video, that won't suffice the entire season so I know I'm rolling the dice. My plan is to put down a barrier 1.5 months from now after all of the seed germinates. Thoughts?
@DaveAtUofL3 жыл бұрын
Ryan, I have the same problem. Last year I had a total of 7 (SEVEN!) weeds in my lawn in spring. This year however after putting down my pre-emergent I've got 30 - 50 spots that are going to need to see some weed control early in the season. I'm guessing the heavy snowfall caused enough turf damage to open the canopy up enough to allow them to come through, vs what we got last year. (no snow.)
@chadmarshall33493 жыл бұрын
Your lawn looks great. That aerial view of the mole trails is CRAZY. I dealt with that a few years back. I noticed you putting seed down and latest ground temps are showing under 50 degrees here in the northwestern part of Illinois. I have RTF Tall Fescue I am using and I was under the impression that ground temps need to be about 60 for germination. Am I wrong on that? We have some mornings getting down to 30 and below this week. Just curious on your thoughts on ground temps and germination. Thanks Ryan. I get excited every time I am notified a new episode is out.

I just moved into a home in SW Washington State. The previous owner had a backyard trampoline where there was no adjusting of the location over time. So now I have a circular bare spot. It’s a small backyard so the spot takes up a big section of my little backyard. It’s the beginning of April and we are still dealing with rain here. Just got almost 2” over the past 2 days. I’m wondering if I should tackle the damaged section now or wait it out until it the weather starts to warm a little more or wait until the Fall. I’m a beginner with lawn care so I’m unsure on how to properly tackle this.

About your comment on seeding vs pre-emergent, what's the best way to do both? Can you use granular pre-emergent, break up the soil in the dead spots therefore breaking the pre-emergent layer, and then add seed? Or seed first, hope they start growing, then add pre-emergent?

Hypothetically maybe it's possible but remember you want your roots to grow deep into the soil and the vapor barrier from prodiamine would be the first couple of inches.

If you let your grass grow taller, around 3.5" in the back, you will eliminate a lot of the problems you are having. I'm not talking about the mole/vole damage.
