xsyon, hit me hard, i never thought i would ever see anything related to it again, after spending a good couple years in it. i remember building a small cottage in the middle of this huge lake when the game first game out, ive watched tribes being built and then left abandoned, only for me to finally do the same in 2022 when i was alone. this is probably the best and last documentation i will ever see about the game i once loved, and hopefully this will bring more new people in. thank you for this awesome video.

Ace of Spades was the biggest w in gaming for me as a kid and teen. I have about 4,000 hours in it, got so good that I eventually never lost a match and it led me to play Rainbow Six Siege competitively here in Australia thanks to my attraction to destructive environmental competitive games. This game rocked and was the absolute bomb for a weekend with my mates.

the whole xyion section was so cool, I never played this game but seeing all this history, and even getting some background info and stuff was super interesting and seeing all these builds was awesome and just amazing to see this time capsule. plus the whole situation with pean was sad but also beatiful to see that they still upload a video yeaaars later and still memory him in the description that just shows so much love in my opinion it's unreal. super amazing video obviously! love it

It's stuff like that segment that make me feel video preservation, particularly online games, needs to be taken more seriously. There's something so beautiful about this map, the history of it, the people collaborating to build things, probably having tons of fun together and building friendships along with their structures. I especially felt touched at the idea that one person from a tribe just logs on every now and again to keep the fires lit. It just really hit home with me, all these memories these people created together being kept alive.

Ace of Spades was SOO much fun back in the day! I was a kid and it was the perfect mixture of a shooter and Minecraft that you could play together with your friends. I adored it, maybe it wasn't perfectly balanced, but back then, it was just a lot of FUN!

A word on Brink. I played it at release and was so let down by it. There is something that is missed though in the discussion. One of the huge selling points about Brink was that it was going to let you customize your character like crazy. We were told we could make them look however we liked. This was the era of All Points Bulletin (APB) and the crazy customization that you could do there, so we didn't really have a reason to not believe them. Additionally, the SMART system was sold as "how the game worked". Everyone was moving that fast, and everyone could move around that fluidly. The reality? There were a handful of premade skins that you could mix and match, but you couldn't make them look however you liked. There were very few skins to choose from. And the SMART movement system? That only worked on the "Small" body type. What they neglected to share was that there would be a Small, Medium, and Large body type, with decreasing mobility. The Small body type allowed movement like those seen in the trailers, but had very little health. Medium felt like a normal FPS, if not a bit more clunky, and Large body type was the most durable but you couldn't do all the cool fancy movement tricks they showcased. And none of this even touches all the bugs, some of which seemingly still exist to this day. At $50 I felt robbed. For me Brink was "the" game. It was the game that taught me not to preorder. It over-promised and under-delivered so harshly it changed the way I bought games forever.

I actually loved Brink. I went in With very few expectations and was blown away. I was basically the only one. I loved the gameplay and objective based scoring. It’s too bad the game died so quickly. I played for a whole month before it was just me and the bots. Forever. I left because I had mastered combat against bots.

Xsyon seems more digital art than just an RPG. Reminds me of the Remarkable story of Ibelin documentary I saw at the 2024 Melbourne International Film Festival where a young man died of a genetic disorder and his parents only discovered how much of an impact he had online in a Warcraft clan.

@@Egon_Freeman I have a 10 year old Minecraft map I saved from my XBox and still use to this day. My sister started it to mess around with squids, and it kind of just turned into THE creative map. I transferred and converted it from console to PC, put it on a private server, and we still build on it with friends from time to time. I couldn't really quantify it in number of builds because... there's just stuff _everywhere_ haha. Sometimes I put the server on and just fly around appreciating builds. It's the only Minecraft world that's survived that long for me because it has one rule: never destroy anything you've built. In short, I agree. Save your games, because it is so worth it.

Rye did a great job in highlighting this game. It def has been fun playing and I still play it from time to time. Anyone who wants to make things that are fantastic only your imagination stops ya really. There are a lot of fantastic builds in the game. I am still playing Xsyon but my health has taken a nose dive and I am slowly getting back into playing. Rye showed a few of my places. I know my aztec build blew em away. I am the one that has over 1200 toons. I bought them to help support the developer in keeping the game alive and moving forward.

I have a love/hate relationship with abandoned or dying games. There's something so calming about being in a game that you know is never going to have a decent playerbase but also it gives you a really sad feeling. A few years ago I used to love playing PUBG Lite on pc with friends, then when the paid version of PUBG was about to go f2p they announced the closing of Lite servers. I remember those last few weeks of playing against bots and feeling like a king from having 20+ kills lol. Such a weird world where things end as suddenly as they began.

Having an experience like Shadow does in Xsyon is mesmerizing, If you cannot understand why he would play such a dead game for so long and be so committed, I personally played a dead game called Tactical Craft Online for about a year until it shut down early last year and it was the most immersive and unique experiences I've had with any game. I only joined it about 8 years after it released so I'm not as dedicated or long-standing as shadow, though in my case Tactical Craft Online is very similar in design to Xsyon, and just about every day would have an average of 0 players. Having an entire game left behind by other players and now only roamed by you, made it my very own extremely immersive archaeology game. Creating landmarks of abandoned player made ruins, looting old storages that are endearingly humanly sorted and organised, expired/unclaimed bases with way higher leveled leftover structures to expedite your own progress (making even more landmarks and now places to travel between), the game having its own niches and mechanics you can exploit when equipped with the knowledge that players existed long before you (In TCO every tile you walk on can be dug up and used as hidden storage, getting in the minds of old players to find their stash is amazingly rewarding), trying to figure out how unclear mechanics work via sifting through super old messages in a dead discord server, coming across the few massive builds by chance or by trekking towards a mark on the world map, and just so many more unique experiences. it was SOOOOOO FUN! and ENGAGING! and AH I MISS IT! I wish for everyone to have such an experience, though sadly, given the nature of how the experience is formed, very few will be able to. Shadow is a very fortunate guy.

Ace of Spades was one of the top indie games you could find back in the day. The memories of the tunnel wars in the Hallway map, the mass pushes, and frag spam that rivaled COD WAW. A memory that makes you miss the old days. Brink was a fun brick of a game, at least the campaign

I immediately recognized Ace of Spades. My sister and I played it in the early days for such a short time. But the game was so much fun. Its a shame what happened to it, we never truly got anything like it ever again. And that game where the player showed you around and all the structures that was built, it got me emotional. This reminds me of a Minecraft Mini Game I played way back, probably around 2013, 2014. I really can't say for sure. It was called DVZ (Dwarves Vs Zombies.) It was developed, and made by a guy called RawTech, he even had a channel with video of him playing on the server. The game mode was basically just roughly 100 people (Which was crazy at the time.) getting around 10 minutes to build defenses around a small 'core.' And then at random a few players were infected, and they killed a couple, and then new infected would spawn outside the walls, forcing them to break their way in. It gave a breathing buffer for the defenders, but everntually the hoards were too powerful, the dwarves could never win, and that was the intentions of the game. Since the zombies had infinite respawns, it was just a matter of holding out. Fond memories.

It's funny you played OpenSpades. While obviously all of us back in the day were blown away by it, it caused a huge (friendly and non-detirmental) rift in the community over which launcher to use. Myself and a subsection of the community that called themselves the "veterans" (many of us used the [VET] clan tag to show this, though it was also just a large clan in the game. I was a member of VET for a while and even played some tournaments under it, but we were loose about letting people use our tag as years went on) refused to move over onto OpenSpades, preferring to play the OG version in 4:3 stretched to 16:9. Insane, I know, but in a twitch shooter where reaction time and aim is all that matters, whatever works for you is what you stick with. I remember another major figure in the community called Jennifer was a huge proponent of OpenSpades and liked to make fun of those of us who stayed behind. It became commonplace in the BnS community to find a dead server to 1v1 on if you had a disagreement. Jennifer and I had several such 1v1s. At the time I would have said I came out the better, but in hindsight I think we were actually very similarly skilled. Tower of Babel was another such friendly rift. I much preferred 24/7 hallway to ToB, but Babel was always the undisputed champion outside of Arena nights (Arena was basically counterstrike without the bomb. Two teams fight in a map without destruction. This was the primary competitive gamemode I played and all three of the clans I played with liked to boast of our Arena skill). Babel had very frustrating distance protection where you couldn't shoot blocks on the other team's side unless you got close. While this was necessary for balance, in the OG version of the game it would spam a chat message and slightly stutter the game every time you shot a block too far away. It was infuriating. For anyone from the community back in the day, I was F22Raptor, dc3773 and Dropbear. I was in the clans [VET] and one I forget the tag of but was one of the larger ones, and I co-founded [META], the clan which won one of the community TDM tournaments on that map that was like two flat triangles meeting at the point. I forget its name. To anyone I had beef with, just know that even in the heated moments I look back on those years of playing as my fondest multiplayer memories in any game. Nothing can recapture the feeling we all got seeing our game saved by the BnS community. I was 12 when I started playing in 2011. Last time I played more than a couple minutes to check in I would have been probably 17 or 18 in 2017. No game captured me that hard for that long. I still check in and play a round or two of arena about once a year. Sadly even the Brazilian community that was keeping the playercount decent seems to have mostly faded away.

It's essentially a remake of project reality, which was made by the squad devs before they made squad - ironically enough loads of people had even been interested in the reality mod, but I e.g. never heard that it actually was released. So no wonder that it has no playerbase, people have moved on after the interest died of and no one even heard about it anymore.

@@Unknown_Genius the problem was the lack of content when BF3 PR come out it was bear bone not a lot of map only 1 vehicle for the two faction so yhea and the update plus you have to own BF3 prenium even if now it's like 10 euro, so people start leaving and go back to squad or the good old Project Reality mod

When BF3 RM came out the servers were full constantly and there was no queue system, I played many hours with friends but it was released too early (it was inf only at the start and repetitive on the same maps) and the development was too slow, the player base left. We still play BF3 often but Squad has filled the void that RM left

You're not wrong about how badly they fucked up the game. But the private servers always existed. The whole game had been community hosted since day 1. I also think Jagex's deviation from the core gameplay was a necessity since the terms of the buyout dictated the original be left alone in it's current unreleased open source state. So in order to have brand distinction and encourage buying their version they had no choice but to distance themselves from the original. Obviously they misunderstood what everyone liked about the game and thats what did it in, that and the typical corpo "whatever is necessary for profits" mentality. I feel like if they could have hired on the original dev to be part of production maybe it would have had a better chance but who knows.

​​​@@byrd3242AoS was not, is not, and never will be open source. OpenSpades was a combination of an agreement with the developers and jagex, and aspects of the game that were moddable to begin with. For several years myself and others campaigned Jagex to make the classic version open source so it could receive engine updates. Admittedly since most of us involved with the campaign were kids we didn't realize what we were asking for was never going to happen. Jagex owns the rights to the Voxlap engine version used for the game (the voxlap engine is open source btw, at least as of a few years ago the dev was actually quick to respond to emails about it and happy to answer any questions) and the game itself. The agreement they came to was simply to allow the classic version to remain hosted through community servers. The game had community servers pretty much from day one, so most of the game was there. Jagex didn't immediately allow this however, there was an over year long period where Build N Shoot wasn't up yet and the old site was dead. That said even at that time you could directly connect to servers through your browser if you had the link address. That was a rough era though, almost killed the game completely. While at the time myself and most of the community despised Jagex for what they did, in hindsight we were very lucky. Very few companies allow old free pre-alphas of the games they require to remain up and free to access for the community. I do obviously wish development on the original could have continued though, because the Jagex version captured none of what was great about the original. Furthermore your timeline is just generally wrong. While yes the classic game and Jagex were technically being worked on simultaneously, they were completely separate games. As I said above there was a period of time (from memory it was sometime in 2013 to late 2014 or early 2015) where Build N Shoot (AoS classic) hadn't yet launched and the original was unavailable. Jagex's version came out in 2012. Accounting for development time it seems unlikely the existence of the classic mode was in any way relevant to why their version was so different. Additionally they later released a "classic mode" that was meant to be quite similar to the vanilla gamemodes of the original. So if it was a contractual problem that would have required a new contract to be allowed. In reality from publicly available information it appears Jagex's version was simply extremely rushed. They were trying to capitalize on the Minecraft craze and thought they were buying an asset that would make them huge money if they could get it out the door while Minecraft was still growing in popularity (little did they know Minecraft wouldn't reach its first peak and plateau until 2014). They brought in a contractor to get the game done as quickly as possible. These contractors were likely completely unaware of the original or simply didn't have time to play it in order to understand its mechanics. Jagex's version is very much a product of its time. Minecraft was hugely popular and TF2 was still quite relevant being only one year past its F2P launch and being hot off the heels of Mann vs. Machine. Jagex's version is very obviously trying to lean into the Minecraft aesthetic (the original looks very little like minecraft due to the incredibly unique and complex voxel rendering it used) while also including the class shooter elements of TF2. It had no soul of its own, as the original game did (which wasn't a minecraft clone and in fact started development before Minecraft was publicly known about. The Voxlap engine predates Minecraft).

Hey Rye, ive warched quite a few of your videos at this point and I wanted to make a suggestion for a game review. Namely Starmade. It was released in 2012 and at this point it has been pretty much abandoned. The game was unfortunately never finished however back in it's peak it was great and I've spent many hours on it. Every now and again I remember the game and I wish something more came of it. Even now the forums are active with posts from yesterday and the game averages 4/5 people. I would love to hear your thoughts about the game. I did look if you've made a video on it however I was unable to find one.

Xyson's human settlements evoke the feeling of nostalgia in me even though I never played the game. I can still relate and imagine how much fun those people had back in the day building those settlements and structures, what their plans and ambitions were for their tribes, and how ultimately the passing of time herds away masses to different online and physical places. The memories created in these games certainly exist but remembering them also bring pain of nostalgia along with them. I hope most, if not all the people we this video and hopefully feel appreciated of their work and shares experiences. I love this side of humanity ❤
