Ryobi 18 volt trimmer/edger review

whats up people !! Got another Ryobi tool this one is the 18 volt 13 inch trimmer/edger. Originally had the smaller 18 volt trimmer and i liked it a lot but ended up giving it to a family member that liked how light it was and how well the little thing performed. I decided to get another trimmer but upgraded to the 13 inch. The cost was 129 bucks at home depot, and it also comes with a charger and battery.
The good is its got good power and feels well built
the bad is the blade attachments suck and not sure how well this will do as an edger

I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use kzbin.infoUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.

Do NOT use the plastic blades for edging. They're only ment for trimming, I'm sure the manual will tell you. Whenever you buy the blades separately it lets you know in the packaging ONLY FOR TRIMMING.

Just got mine out of the box....functioning fine BUT sounds "wrong"...more clanking and not "buzzing". My Dog was close by, not a good safety practice. The debris really flies hard.

I contacted Ryobi to ask if they have metal blades you can buy for edging since the plastic ones wear out when they scrape cement. The rep said the blades are meant for brush and bushes (things thicker than grass). She said to do edging, if you have the attachment-capable wacker/edger tool, you need to buy the edger attachment (RYEDG12). It has metal blades and is designed to do lawn edging. It’s about $75 at Home Depot. Thanks to your review, I’m about to go get the tool now (I’ll get the attachment later). Also (for anybody new to doing their own yard work like me), she said the 40v 4 amp battery is interchangeable with the their lawnmower’s 40v 6 amp battery. It just doesn’t have as much power so it doesn’t last as long.

I have the 40v lawn mower. So I went to Home Depot and looked at that 40v edger-trimmer. Judas Priest, you need Popeye like forearms to handle that thing! The weight was a deal breaker. That 40 vdc battery is not practical for anything that's supported by hands and arms alone. Maybe a cordless snow blower is in my future. I went with the trimmer Ski is featuring here.

@@josephcampese5347 I agree with you completely. The weight was too much. At the end of the day if you remember to recharge your batteries, you will have a full battery for your lawn mower with the 40v battery and a full battery for your trimmer with the 18v. No issue.

You probably don't have it "clocked" correctly. I think it only goes on one way, but that's only a guess.

I always save my empty “spools” and restring them myself with a much more larger and economical roll. I did it with my old 40v model, and will continue to do it with this one. It doesn’t take that much time. Just do it at night while watching the old idiot box 😂 ...soon you’ll have ten done! You’ll go broke buying those Ryobi 3 packs, Lol.

Good video, but use the wheel to run along the concrete. I edge my grass in one pass. Don’t keep going back and forth. Mine is straight as opposed to yours. Plastic blades are NOT for edging. Read your instructions before you do a video. Otherwise a good job.

Mine broke off in 10 min and i had to file down the guard holes to make it fit but it works great now. I got the trimmer and blower combo at Home Depot for 154$ and a drill for 79$ which seems expensive for a drill but i am very happy with all the tools at a decent price.

I bought this same product. I was unable to find the replace blades so I bought the 2 in 1 line/bladed head. It was compatible with this product. However, the blade was ate up very quickly, and although it comes with additional blades, they didn't fit securely once I started edging. I'm stuck with just using the string. And you mentioned in the video switching back and forth with the pedal may wear over time...you're right. It's a struggle to return back to weed wacking after edging. Overall, after 2 months of using this product, I would not recommend it.

The 3-pack spools don't last long, and they don't deploy well because my spools were rung haphazardly from the factory and were getting stuck. I got better at edging at High speed and tilting the unit away from the sidewalk if I want more of a swath or nice ditching in the soil- more definition. I'll remove the cutter to see if that preserves the line if I don't keep stopping and starting, thus deploying more stirng-length each time.

The reason you were eating up so much line was because you were cutting more concrete than you were grass 😂 and you definitely don't use those plastic blades for edging. Smh. Those are just used strictly for trimming

Just bought one yesterday and am looking for info about operation. One thing seems to be an issue to me. Every time you release the finger trigger to stop the motor, new line is automatically fed out. I'm very new to doing this myself while hubby is temporary away, so I stop and start a lot! Seems like I'm wasting bunches of line and each reel won't last long. Maybe this isn't the tool for me? Are they ALL like this?

@@MrsCasa the line is supposed to feed that way on this model. Traditional weed wackers feed by bumping the end on the ground which pushes a button and releases more line. After doing it enough times you'll figure out an efficient route around your yard and won't be starting and stopping as much. The reels on these are extremely easy to replace though so I wouldn't worry about wasting too much line as long as you buy extra reels. Good luck!

No. Did it look better than before I started? Yep. Gotta admit, I'm just a little bit proud of myself. :)

Instead of edging on cement I put edger on grass and it seems to prevent hitting the cement.

I recently bought one of these, and two things come to mind: 1. I suspect that the unit is good quality, but it sure doesn't feel like it. It is very lightweight and there is a LOT of cheap looking plastic. 2. The automatic line feed doesn't work properly. The line keeps getting stuck and not advancing at each start the way it should, so I have to stop and take it apart to manually bring more line out. Otherwise I must say it works very well and is easy to use.

Good quality? What turnip truck did you fall off of? Seriously? Ryobi is GARBAGE! Their products are the antithesis of quality. That POS is priced way to high and should never be sold at a reputable hardware store. Ryobi's products should be sold at a dollar store and be advertised as disposable for one time use only because that's about all you'll get from a ryobi trimmer or any other of their cheaply made products.

I bought the fucking thing only because my 15 year old Troy-Bilt had finally died and I needed a weed whip and a blower, and Home Depot had a Ryobi combo for $90. The blower is AWESOME, the cheesy weed whip? Not so much. I'm just going to run it into the ground and see how long it lasts. 3-4-5 years? Fine. 6 months? Fine! Into the trash it goes. Then I'm going to do it right and do what I should have done to begin with and buy an electric Stihl. Thanx!

Don't know why anyone would badmouth Ryobi. I have 10 different drills and other tools. I use them in construction. Best bang for your buck. I still have blue tools running. Those are some of the first built. As good as my DeWalt and half price. Very handy having a long standing 18 volt system. I do have bothe trimmers. This model and the heavier duty (also heavier) model. I must confess that I bought this model for 20.00 at garage sale site with new battery so it was a win for me. The 18 volt blower is one of my favorites. Blow out garage, sidewalks, patios, porches and water off car after washing. Not too good on yard but saves a ton of arm swinging from brooming.

I use copper wire 14, 100 ft. Roll, strip off plastic insulation if you want. Coat hanger wire works too. Sometimes they break off if you hit hard surfaces just be careful. Cut the lengths just short of the weed walker cutter. I mount the wires on the blades thing that comes with the wacker. Just slip through the space, bend in half and twist = 4 wire blades. For edging I roll the wheel on the grass. One more thing, during this world wide crisis, plain and simple, Christ Jesus " is the ONLY hope for man kind". The Lord bless you.

when you put the new plastic blades on put 2 small metal washers on each side of the blade when putting the screw back in that will limit the wobble of the plastic blade and keep it more center

I used the plastic blades on tall grass and blades would fly off getting lost in the grass, string worked better.. The guard mounting screws (2 out of 3) flipping from trimmer to edger broke off.

When I first assembled mine, first time I pulled the trigger, the sting trim blade ripped right off. I returned it and got another one. Same thing happened again. This time I super glued it back in place and out a sharp edge on it with a file. Worked fine after that. Your impression of the blades not working is because you did not use them for their intended use. Not designed for edging.

You have to reverse the screw where the line cuts automatically if to long. I turn around the screw cut piece and line works much better. Look on inside of the cover and u will see it UN screw the tab and reverse it.

What is the best string to use with that? Because I have been trying all good suggested strings but all of them cut off in less than a minute. Please help. I have to use the one one with the blade to have the job done. However I prefer the string cut.

I just bought this bc I don't want to mess with mixing gas and all that goes into a gas powered edger any more. Gas powered edger's and weed whackers are heavy, they can flood, they can be persnickety and you have to pull start them which I personally would rather just get on with my yard work and not have to mess with all that goes into a gas powered tool. That aside, I also think that it is much better for the environment to use a rechargeable tool and not need gas so that was my ultimate selling point. NOT needing to mess around with the fuel and the 2 stoke crap that is standard with most weed eaters and edger's was my reason for trying this new one. That said, It is much better for the environment and is also MUCH lighter and quieter to use. It is REALLY quite and there is NO SMELL. It really has all the power and then some that a gas powered one has but with out all the fuss and muss. Out of the box it came with some line already pre-loaded. Not much I assume. I did find that I went thru the line that was pre loaded when I bought it really fast, so I needed to replace the line after a few uses BUT it had been a few months since I needed to do edging along the concrete and I am still learning how to position and use the really great edging guide to the proper position so maybe now that I have a feel for the edging guide position and how to use the edging function/swivel wheel guide, I can go longer with the string option. Like I said, I am willing to bet that they only load a small amount of string in it for sale so there is a good possibility that once I load it with the replacement string that it will last much longer, but I DIDI use it for 2 months before I needed to replace the string. Pros: I love the cordless mobility. I love how light it is and now maneuverable the weed eating vs edging functions are. I love that it is VERY powerful. Even against the gas powered one I already have. The battery charges fast and I don't need to charge it very often. Although my yard might be smaller than say someone who has acres to maintain, I have used it for 2 months each weekend and only had to charge it once. I have not tried using the blades yet so I have no input on those, but so far this is a really good yard tool. It is super versatile and you can take it anywhere on your property with out needing to lug a cord or gas can for refills. Cons: if you get stuck in "the bush" with out a power source, you're screwed., but it does last a really long time. If you like the smell of the 2 stroke engine, your screwed. If you live in Kansas, and plan on using this to edge you're fields, you probably want to get more line and a few extra battery packs. and lastly, If the weekend of yard work means fiddle farting with that 2 stroke that your dad gave you or you have had since you graduated from college, YOU ARE STILL SCEWED. Get with the program and replace it with one. you wont be disappointed. If you are looking for this as a bush Wacker, I think that it DEF has the power to do the job. But this guy might have a good point on the blades. Bush whacking is very much a different animal than simple maintained grass weed eating and edging. If you are trying to get started with this on a neglected lawn then it WILL take its toll on the string line/ blades as well as if you're talking about removing stalks of vegetation vs just upkeeping a lawn. I don't know how the blades will hold up to that type of heavy duty work in the yard,. Maybe there are a universal blade that can be swapped out for another type of more ridged blade? Over all. I give this a 9 out of 10 for all the reasons I have stated. The only downfall is the excessive string and blade wear. But I think that if this is a tool that is used to maintain rather than mitigate a over gown lawn and once you get your lawn into shape and learn the way the edging guide works, it will preform beautifully in the weekly maintenance that you need. It just might be the best replacement for the convention gas powered edger/weed eater you have been used to.

How does this 18v version compare to the older 40v trimmer/edger? I keep replacing the motor on my 40v because i can’t find that model anywhere anymore. Would it be worth just going to the 18v model since they still make it? I like the power of the 40v. I’m in a pickle here.

my unit same as yours used a spooll of string in 20 minutes i it sucks so i fixed it to not feed line out till i do it now the line is strong and the auto cut bladr is not shart and it pulls out more than is needed

I wish mine came with those blades. I just got one that came with a leaf blower and the string keeps feeding while im using it and then once the guard cuts it to length, the string gets caught underneath the head, rinse and repeat. Basically i havent even been able to see how it even cuts grass. All its done is cut itself

I really enjoyed the video! Nice job! I would like to have seen the blades in action with tough overgrowth around fences. I don't plan to use this as much as an edger but to trim the walls of my back patio and around the house. How did the blades do with strong weeds and over-growth? I moved into a home that did not have much lawn care, so I want to cut down the aggressive weeds around my patio walls. Thoughts?

Ditto Patrick Kimbrell...the plastic blades aren't designed for edging...they are for (thick) grass/weeds etc...and not designed to be used against a fence, concrete, or building. And the reason the string got ate up so fast...it was due to the concrete. If your grass hadn't overgrown so far over the concrete...it would have lasted longer...as well as if you had gone in a straight line instead of back and forth. But thanks for the video...it was useful to see how the trimmer performed. :-)

The operator's manual tells you what the blades are for. It doesn't mention using them for edging.

Just purchased mine yesterday. The piece with plastic blades had sticker that said so NOT use for trimmer.

One question the head where you feed the string into how can you replace it in other words remove it so I can add a universal blade to it. I hate the plastic ones they give you with it.

The part where the bottom is will not stay on when I hit the buttons to make it spin it spins right off

Wet the whacker lines to last longer, lubricates them so they won't break fast. U might do the same with the blades. Don't use blades for edging.

I have one similar, but the damn thing seems way too long, a pain to use.. I dont see anyway to shorten the length of this?

I tried to use this trimmer but the wire keep coming out too long and it stuck in to the mechine so I tried to release either thing on that but still didnt work, please show me how to hold and release that thing to make it work. Thanks

Apparently while releasing the trigger it advances more string. I had a horrible time yesterday (first time using it). I’ve been reading reviews and watching videos to learn more. The instructions are terrible. They should have created a separate button to release more string, not the same trigger that enables it to go.

Great video but per the manual, you are not supposed to use the blade for edging, the blade is actually to cut grass.

I purchased same weed wacker as you, in the box they gave me bonus set of replacement blades. But as you see tbose screws holing blade in head and not replaceable. I found and had to buy another head that allows blade to be changed but those screws plastic. At 20.00 it lasted 5 min.blade chewed and one screw destroyed. Ryobe does not seem tomake lasting head for replacing blades. replacing the entire head again with universal head tuff- line has blade head w plastic and metal, not sure if they'll fit. I also bought a heavy duty edger blade, not sure if my attachment again not sure if it can go on this model. P2008VNM. Ryobe is not very helpfull.

Anyone can help me with the handle? The handle is on the right side instead of directly above so that I cannot hold up the trimmer by the handle with my left hand. Why is the handle on the right?

You need to keep walking as you are cutting the edges. You are not suposed to go in a back and forth motion. That's why your blades weared down.

For anyone having issues releasing the edger, I learned the hard way that it has to be running! The manual does not tell you this.
