Hey Simon. This is a tough subject and sometimes varies from the general rules, as you mentioned. I think the reason Saturn can be used both ways is, Saturn is a proper noun (固有名詞), which we usually use 's with. "Of" is also used to show there is a "relationship" (関係). "Of" tends to be more ambiguous yet, at the same time, more fomal. Tough topic but well explained! Hats off to you!

The term "sombody's photo" can be used for the same meaning as "a photo of somebody," according to a Longman English dictionary. More complicated are expressions like "Russian invasion of Ukrane," which means "Russia has invaded Ukrane," or "Russia is an attacker and Ukrane is a victim." I often wonder if what I have written is really correct.
@pawnpipe10 ай бұрын
Saying "somebody's photo" is interpreted to mean that somebody is in possession of the photo. Saying "a photo of somebody" is interpreted as saying that somebody is in the photo. "Russian invasion of Ukrane" is certainly ambiguous. "The Judgement of Paris" is usually interpreted as Paris judging the three goddesses. However, in a painting by a feminist female artist, the goddesses are judging naked Paris.

「Japan → Japanese or Japan’s」「America → American or America’s」の使いどころのちがいについても説明してほしいです。中学英語では「Japanese」という単語に「日本の、日本語、日本人、日本人の」など、はばひろい意味があることを教えてもらうので、多くの人が使い方をまよっていると考えています。
わかりやすい解説ありがとうございます。‘sといえば、Japan’s prime minister とJapanese prime minister のような使い分けについてはどのように考えればいいでしょうか?
@SoC-id8vg Жыл бұрын

@@user-yi7pp5rt1z As an English speaker... 英語を話す人は、普通に、「’s」と擬人化の思わないです。 たとえば、「My computer's OS updated last night.」(私のコンピュータのOSは昨夜アップデートされました) 私のコンピュータは人間のようにないのか、でもOSを持つ。 たとえば、「A friend's friends」より「A friend of a friend」の方が良い、でも私の友人の友人は人間でしょうか。 それでも、たぶん、擬人化なの考え方は良いと思います。 (English speakers tend not to think of the possessive s as personifying of anthropomorphizing things. For example, in "My computer's OS updated last night," we don't think of the computer as acting like a living being might, but we do consider it to posses an OS. Conversely, while I think of "a friend of a friend" as being human, I still prefer that phrasing over "my friend's friend." But even so, that's not a bad way of thinking about it in my opinion.) 「’s」は難しいかな… 実は、私に日本語の「の」も難しい…www

Hi! I enjoy your contents every time. As you mentioned in the video mountain's top sounds quite odd in English because mountains are not considered living object in so called English cultrue. In contrast, Japan is composed by human, or the group, so Japan's future sounds familiar. I totally agree your explanation. In Japanese Shinto or other creeds multipule Gods (gods?) are there everywhere, and mountains are often considered to be living, the sutiation would be different, thougth. By the way, I think the usage of mountain top is frequently heard and popular. So there are other ways of expression. Please explain the difference. Thanks: Japan future Japanese future (the) future of Japan
@GwenWinterheart9 ай бұрын
honestly, as an english speaker i don't agree that being a living object makes a difference. I think the main difference is that using 'of' sounds a little more impressive or dramatic, and that sometimes we avoid 's because it's difficult to say. For example, i wouldn't say "the river's width" not because the river isn't alive, but because i don't want to pronounce "rswi". I would say "the river's edge" because "rse" is much easier. if you try to say "the river's side" it just sounds like "riverside" and that eventually became its own word along with 'mountainside' 'hillside' the difference between "Japan's future" and "The future of Japan"/"The Japanese future" is just that the ones with "the" attached sound a little more dramatic. Also, i probably wouldn't say "the Japanese future", but there's no rule against it, it's just that "the future of [country]" is a common pattern.

そう言えば『雨ニモマケズ』の一節「野原ノ松ノ林ノ小サナ萓ブキノ小屋ニヰテ」ってどう訳すんだろうと思って調べてみたのですが、 (一例のようですけど)"I'll make my home in a hut with a thatched roof, near a meadow surrounded by pine trees." となっていて、ofも'sも使われていなかった。
