For all those leaving hate comments, there are a few things you need to remember. This car was designed and then quickly put into production. It was supposed to be like an AC Cobra, which wasn't a very practical car to begin with. Giving the fact that cars quickly put into production are usually crap, this car left a huge following, and actually left a huge footprint on the automotive world. This car was designed in the 80's, by an at the time, crap company. Despite this, this car was actually pretty fantastic. Having driven one for an extended period of time, I can tell you that you don't need all those creature comforts. With the top down, you got plenty of cool air. I actually had somebody try to get into it, but they couldn't figure out how to open it. You have to zip the window two ways before you can open it. It was designed to be for drivers, not for people looking for a sensible two seat sports car. No, the original 1st gen weren't designed for being practical, however from 2nd gen and on to today, they actually are extremely practical. One last thing about the 1st gen, it got up to 21 MPG. At the time for a supercar, that was absolutely amazing. Today, you can get one for as low as $19,000!!!!!! That's a lot of car for 19 grand! I love this car, and you can't really talk trash about it until you've owned one.

Exactly! I had a 1994 (first year for A/C). Never used it. However, That Viper (all stock) xcpt for kn&n and smooth tubes was a beast on the street. Litterly was a pocket rocket on steroids. The other Viper owners in our club had added Roe super chargers which made them wicked fast. It tore up stangs, vettes, cameros and even lambos in its Day and for only $55K new. Today when people say they have a fast car I ask them if they can beat a Viper, then tell me you have a fast car. Even today the new Viper pulls away from the Hellcat every time 😜 The Viper Club of Jacksonville. ViperVas .....

to everyone complaining about the door handles: Carroll Shelby was involved in the design of the Viper, and his inspiration was the Cobra, which was also his design, of course ... he wanted a simple, raw, brute car ... nothing frivolous or unnecessary like ABS or cup holders, just like the Cobra ... and one design element of the Cobra was no door handles

There was a discussion on MotorTrend's channel about this car - apparently it was a bunch of engineers flipping the bird at what was then an extremely dull line-up of safe, economical cars from Chrysler. I don't even like it all that much - the build quality is shocking, the engineering is basic and it's as refined as a supermarket toilet, but I completely understand and appreciate what the engineers were doing when they made it. Complete madmen.

While it's true that the prototype Viper V10 engine blocks were cast by Lamborghini, it's not quite as it seems. Lambo was owned by Chrysler at the time. The basic Viper V10 was based directly on Dodge's existing 5.9 V8, but with 2 extra cylinders. That same V10 (detuned) made it into some of their pickup trucks as well. It is the same basic engine, but cast in aluminum and with a few hot-rodder tricks done.
