Well you guys recommended this video to me in the comments of my previous ‪@Sabaton‬ reaction videos, so I did it and I wasn't ready for the hurt y'all. It's so emotional and so wonderful all at the same time. You told me to bring tissues and you were right!

HISTORY DIVE - UNLEASH THE NERD 🤓 ‪@SabatonHistory‬
The Christmas Truce, which this video is obviously based on, was part of a series of widespread unofficial ceasefires along the Western Front of the First World War (WWI) around Christmas 1914. It remains one of the most storied and unexpected moments of the Great War.
When both sides came out of the trenches and met in no-man’s land there were handshakes and words of kindness. The soldiers traded songs, tobacco and wine, joining in a spontaneous holiday party in the cold night.
British soldier Ernie Williams said of the famous football match, “The ball appeared from somewhere, I don't know where... They made up some goals and one fellow went in goal and then it was just a general kick-about. I should think there were about a couple of hundred taking part.”
Diaries and letters describe the German soldiers using candles to light Christmas trees around their trenches. According to one solider’s diary one German infantryman described how a British soldier set up a makeshift barbershop, charging Germans a few cigarettes each for a haircut. Other accounts describe scenes of men helping enemy soldiers collect their dead.
However, not everyone was happy with the truce, the higher ups admonished soldiers but one ridiculously moustached git of a solider said of the event, “such a thing should not happen in wartime. Have you no German sense of honour left?” that asshat (don’t want to get banned) was a 25-year old Adolf Hitler.

Please ignore the fanatics who complain about pausing. this is a reaction channel, and we watch for the reaction you have to the music. If they want to listen to the music without a pause, they should just watch the freaking original video. Sorry, this has always been a peeve for me, why watch a reaction channel then endless complain about the reaction!! This song was a labor of love for Par and Joakim, who felt the story was so important that the music had to be perfect. As tamarisk said, Joakim has stated this is written as a waltz and the opening is Carol of the Bells with the chords reversed. The cross at the end represents a real cross outside Ypres commemorating the truce in that area. great reaction, stay safe.

The cross at Ypres is the actual cross that this video shows, where the Truce first happened.
@alancarter41
@alancarter41 Жыл бұрын
@@isaiahwelch8066 If you delve into the video more, you will see the cross in the video was installed on the filming site. That is why Par inscribed 2021 on the cross, to mirror the inscription 1999 (the year it was installed) on the actual Ypres cross. And Ypres was one of multiple sites where British and German troops mingled at Christmas. There are also Christmas truce crosses at other sites, such as Comines-Warneton in Belgium and Frelinghien, France.

It was surely hard, but you also have to remember that you both knew that you were not the aggressors. You were following your orders with fear of punishment. It shows that regular men at the front have civility, unlike the ones in the back, how ever there were some parts in the line where when the Germans/Austrohungarians came out they got killed, thus there was not truce in those areas on the line. Here is a line from an old folk song about catholics and protestants killing one another forever more in the north of ireland: "Those who give the orders are not the ones to die"

My personal belief is, if you're willing to send people to their death, you should have a riffle put in your hands and you should be on the front line shoulder to shoulder with them. Never ask someone else to do something you wouldn't do yourself.

The soldiers on both sides had to be replaced as they either didn't shoot or just shot up in the air. A lot of trenches on both sides were only 50ft apart. They would tell jokes to each other and the policy was you don't shoot and we don't shoot. Apparently some soldiers had the right idea about war.

5:25 - Yep, a lot of the soldiers at that time in the war were already reinforcements, the "first waves" were to a large part already gone - and a lot of them were _promised_ by their superiours that the war would be over pretty soon, that they would definitely be home on Christmas... and then it dragged on and on and on... As for a war that never ends, this was harmless though... To quote another of my Sabaton favourites, "They've been to war a decade. Two more to come..." ("Lifetime of War", about the Thirty Year War obviously)... Just think about it, being 20-25 _and never having known peace..._ 😭

I love this song and video, and yes, emotional would be right. Just when you think it's done they pile on more with Par at the cross and the closing credits music. For another Sabaton video I would very much recommend their live performance of En Livstid I Krig, the Swedish language version of A Lifetime of War (put the captions on!). It is an utterly majestic performance in front of an incredible crowd. It's filmed from one camera which is on the stage behind most of the band and gives you a great view on what it would have looked like to the band themselves. This came out not so long after the 100th anniversary of the armistice, when I learned that the UK had sent soldiers to fight abroad Every Single Year since. A war that never ends, indeed - I cry for the second time when Pär carves the date on the cross. And "Lest We Forget" - a quote from _Recessional,_ the least imperialist of the imperialist poems celebrating Victoria's Jubilee - could be Sabaton's mission statement. It's a song to be felt, so don't worry about showing that emotion. And keep on pausing as much as you want!

@The Metal Muse: Ms. Muse....Dom. Please...do not be ashamed of your tears. They show you to have a conscience. You empathize. That you have compassion. What this really shows is how, even in the darkest hours, the darkest days, that men will not lose their humanity, as long as the light of hope stays lit. There are some interesting things from this that you should know. First, after the Truce in 1914, a German commander ended up shifting his unit to another section of the line, when his men refused to fire upon the men they had celebrated Christmas with the day before. Second, I once read a comment that has always stayed with me: A commenter on another reaction said that had it not been for the Christmas Truce, he would not exist, as his great-grandfathers met each other on that field that day, near Ypres, Belgium. Lastly, the cross at Ypres, which still commemorates the event, still stands as a solemn reminder and monument to the courage of the men who put down their guns that day. And yes, that was Floor singing the ending operatic vocals, as her hubby Hannes, the long-haired blonde guy you see in the beginning almost get blown up, is Sabaton's drummer. So when Joakim wanted operatic vocals, Hannes asked, and Floor delivered. As I've said elsewhere, Floor has a hauntingly beautiful vocal quality, especially when she sings opera. And Dom, I have two songs for you to react to next, both "Animated Story videos, featuring YarnHub:" 1) No Bullets Fly 2) Night Witches Trust me when I say, better it is to cry, learning history, and the tragedy that has happened, than it is to not cry, and forget about history, and what it can yet teach us -- because those who do not remember history, are condemned to repeat it.

the sad story behind this is that the countries superiors of BOTH sides caught wind of this happening and if this would happen again every soldier would be charged for treason. the people in the chairs doing what they want while the puppets have to move.

its not known who first stepped out of the trenches but whoever did either had a lot of faith in the enemy or (more disturbingly) was just fed up and had enough

Fraternizing was very common in 1st year of "the great war". Depends on where you were but as men for adventure it wasn't like it was written in books. So after couple months enemy isn't enemy anymore. In some parts they warned other side that they're gonna bomb that section of trench. So Xmas truce wasn't just one place nor it was whole western front. But summary was, not like most of say that they went to war afterwards. No. Officers had to keep them in "row" and those who didn't want to shoot enemy were transfered to other places. Again this was early in the war. Later it became very dirty but a soldier suffered and died highly likely to illnesses. Ok, i tried lol

It was actually customary at the time after a battle that the doctors and their helpers were allowed to get injured people off the field, so they weren't allowed to shoot. It wasn't like that everywhere but on some fronts

I can´t even emagine how hard that must been to start fight again after 1 day of peace and enjoyment together with their enemie. In the end on the day we are all the same, the world would be better if we can share love insteed of hate :/

My understanding is many that took part where transfered out to other parts of the front. I am thinking they may have done this because it was easier then executing the people that took part and cause a even bigger loss of the troop metal stability.

6:08 A German who was at one of the truces (there were multiple small ones rather than one large one), Manfred von Schreiber I think, wrote home about how he met a Scottish piper that day. Manfred had been stuck and hiding in no man's land overnight and the Scot pulled him out of a shell hole. The Scottish representation is historically accurate!
