Sabaton is one of the best bands that sings about history. There's a lot of songs that i'd like to sugest to you by them, but for now i'll try to restrain myself to five of them: 40:1 - a story about a battle of Wizna. Ghost Division - this one is about German Panzer division commanded by Ervin Rommel. Price of the mile - it's a story abot battle of Pashendale, and also, in my opinion, about futility of war. Next one - Uprising, a song abot Warsaw uprisng in 1944. And, last but not least: Final Solution, a very powerfull song about Holocaust. I'm sure that all of them are worth your time. Ps: Sorry about my english, it's not my native language so please, be gentle with me

A lifetime of war is more important to hear as an early listener. Shows what they really think about war which can be confusing because they often focus on the extreme conditions in a more appreciating way sounding like approval of war.

Finally some Sabaton!! Don't stray away from it for too long now. Sabaton is a legendary Swedish Power Metal band, their songs are mainly based on stories from the WW2. And the singer Joakim Brodén is just the coolest funny guy ever xD So a live video is a must! You would absolutely love *Night Witches* for a more fast and furious experience ;) *Primo Victoria* *Carolus Rex* *Ghost Division* These are three great & popular picks too. I'm looking forward to hear them all on here :D

This band is so underrated and unappreciated by the masses because its #PowerMetal and they have a very choir/operatic sound that people give up on them quickly but each and every song that these guys make represents a piece of history or event that many choose to be ignorant of. I'm a firm believer of knowing where we all come from and remembering how we got here, we all learn from history and Sabaton combines two of my favourite things together in a perfect cacophony (history and music) I can pretty much guarantee you guys will be hooked once you hear a couple of more tracks!!

Sabaton sing about real events, people, etc. Real military history. So the Lost Battalion is a real American Battalion that became surrounded and had to fight for survival. Check out their Sabaton History Channel where they break down the songs and explain the history
@Pawniac
@Pawniac 4 жыл бұрын
Although this comment is a little late, here's some back story about the Lost Battalion; As someone else mentioned, most of the men in the 77th division were young men from New York and it was some 500 men strong. They took part in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, also known as Battle of the Argonne forest. They had orders to not give up any ground, and only move forward. By the time they had found a way to go past Hill 198, their French occupied left flank had been pushed back by the Germans, leaving it completely exposed. A few hours later, their right flank that consisted of American troops, also had the same fate, and so, with both their flanks exposed and under German control, they became encircled. This was discovered only when they finally reached the top of Hill 198, and at that point, it was too late. A runner, George Quinn, was sent to reach Major Whittlesey (Whittlesey was the Division's Captain, later commissioned as a Major) on Hill 198, as their communications line had been cut in half by German forces supported by machine guns. The runner was killed and never made it to Major Whittlesey. With no communication possible, and slowly getting surrounded, HQ lost track of the battalion (hence the name "Lost Battalion"). While on Hill 198, they begun digging in. The steep front side of the hill proved extremely difficult for German forces to attack and made it hard for German planes to accurately drop bombs on the position. At one point during the night, Whittlesey realized that Hill 205 to their left, was still occupied by German forces, and the ravine to their right, was also full of German soldiers. The following morning, Oct 3rd, was spent trying to re-establish contact with HQ and the forces that were supposed to be on their flanks. Multiple runners had been sent, but none returned, as they were either all killed or captured by the Germans. With the day progressing, Whittlesey, getting no word from HQ or any allied forces, slowly realized they were becoming encircled and trapped. In a stroke of luck however, the German forces were not pushing farther, as they believed they were outnumbered by the Americans. However, come afternoon, the Germans mounted an offensive from the flanks and the front of the Hill, supported by sharpshooters. It was at this point, that they realized they were completely cut off, with no chance of being relieved or reinforced, and Captain Holderman, who was working with Whittlesey had observed that the German forces had doubled in size. With their communication line cut and running out of ammunition and food, the situation was looking grim. Holderman mounted an offensive at the rear of the Hill, but was unable to break out, resulting in heavy losses. The idea that they were completely cut off from any help, infuriated Whittlesey, who ordered all the men that took part in the offensive to man their previous defensive positions instead of trying to break out again. After that, the Germans mounted another offensive, this time supported by mortars and employing grenades, but that too had little effect. Finally, in the afternoon, the Germans attacked once more but their attack had similar results. The battalion had suffered heavy casualties but had also inflicted a considerable amount on the German forces. Seeing that it was futile to keep attacking, the Germans begun digging in and settled down for the day. In the morning of Oct 4th, Whittlesey sent patrols out. With no pigeons or runners having reached HQ, they started getting bombarded by friendly artillery, as their position was believed to be occupied by German forces. Whittlesey sent out his last pigeon, Cher Ami ("Dear friend" in French) with the message "We are along the road parallel to 276.4. Our own artillery is dropping a barrage directly on us. For Heaven's sake stop it.", but as the pigeon took off, an artillery shell landed below it, killing 5 men and stunning the pigeon out of the air. However, Cher Ami was able to take flight again. She (the pigeon believed to be male, was actually female), managed to deliver the message successfully, which was a miracle, as she had been shot through the breast, one of her legs was hanging by a tendon and was blinded in one eye. (Whittlesey had also sent out 2 other pigeons, the first carried the message "Many wounded. We cannot evacuate." and the second "Men are suffering. Can support be sent?" but they were both shot down by German troops. Cher Ami's body was later mounted by a taxidermist and currently resides in the Smithsonian museum.) Once the shelling had stopped, the Germans attacked again. This time, they managed to get closer and the fight turned into hand-to-hand combat. They managed to repel the attack but at a high cost. Casualties were high, morale was low, out of food and almost out of ammunition, they started reusing medical equipment such as bandages taken off from their dead. HQ tried to drop a supply crate to the troops, but it was reported to have missed its landing zone and instead landed in German occupied territory. For the next 3 (Oct 5-8th) days, the Germans attacked relentlessly. They had attempted multiple times to get the battalion to surrender but never received a response from Whittlesey. At one point, they even sent an 18-year old American prisoner to deliver a message to Whittlesey saying; "...the suffering of your wounded men can be heard over here in German lines, and we are appealing to your humane sentiments to stop....please treat (the prisoner) as an honorable man. He is quite a soldier. We envy you." which was also met by silence from Whittlesey. At this point, their parent Brigade, the 154th, was trying to break through to the battalion but had little to no success as with each attack, the 77th was losing men and their combat power was dropping. After 4 days of trying, the 308th had lost close to 760 men. The news of the battalion finally reached the American Expeditionary Force and they began assembling a force. The 28th Infantry Division was to reach Whittlesey with the 82nd Inf. Division protecting their flanks. The 1st Inf. Division (AKA "Big Red One") was also ordered to reinforce their ranks and rest up. The German forces observed the movement of the 1st Inf. Division and sent a Prussian Division to reinforce their forces, which was also supported by Stoßtruppen (Stormtroopers, not to be confused with the Star Wars ones :P) equipped with flame throwers to aid the attack against Whittlesey. For the next few days, they had started pushing the Germans back and HQ was trying to infiltrate troops in as reinforcements. In the meantime, Whittlesey asked for a volunteer, to sneak out and guide the reinforcements to them. Private Abraham Krotoshinsky stepped up. He managed to reach the 307th Inf. Division, and guide them back while establishing a path for relief to reach Whittlesey. On Oct 8th, the rest of the 77th relief force managed to link up with Whittlesey's forces and he was promptly promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. In the end, out of the ~500 men that took part in the battle, only 200 survived unscathed. The rest were either killed, wounded or missing. Major Whittlesey (Now Lt. Colonel), Captain McMurtry, and Captain Holderman, all received Medals Of Honor for their actions. Lt. Colonel Whittlesey was recognized by being a pallbearer at the ceremony interring the remains of the Unknown Soldier.

Sabaton is one of the most fun bands I have ever seen live! If they come anywhere near you guys, go see them! They write really catchy songs about war, with sing-along choruses and in the live shows the audience is singing along with them. It's so awesome! One of my favorites from them is "Price of a Mile", but it's another kind of mid-tempo song. Some of the more speed metal songs is stuff like Night Witches, Resist & Bite, Panzer Elite (Ghost Division). I like pretty much all of their songs except for the early early stuff.

There already is a number of comments but I hope Vin and sori can still read it. What I like about Sabaton is their historical source for their songs. Their songs are not about how good and glorious war is (it is not); they just sing about historical episodes that really happened in history. I could suggest: The last stand (about crusades) Shiroyama (the last battle fought by samurai warriors. This episode inspired the movie "The last samurai", with Tom Cruise as main character) Night witches (about soviet night bombing regiment 588 during WWI, whose pilots were all women; soviets had 3 such regiments duringthe war) Ghost division (about Panzer 7th panzer division during invasion of France in 1940; at the time that division was commanded by Erwin Rommel who later was better known as the desert fox) The last battle (about a very small battle in may 1945, in Germany, where soldiers of American and German armies fought toghether against an SS unit to free some very important prisoners that risked to be executed)

Jokes aside for future Sabaton songs i can recommend the lyric-videos made by a channel named "Piscator", he often has the historical background of the songs in his video description. Some other songs by Sabaton you might wanna check out: The Price of a mile Ghost Division Cliffs of Galippoli Night Witches The Final Solution Lejonet från norden (Swedish version of Lion from the north, the mentioned Piscator has the english lyrics in his video) Counterstrike 40:1

As a veteran of the Navy (89-93) and Army Natl Guard (01-07; 1/107th Armored Batt., OIF III), this song brings tears to my eyes. About honor and fighting the good fight. Fighting for your brothers next to you. That's all you have when the bullets fly. It's hard to convey in words the emotion. Listening to Sabaton, it brings those feelings up and makes me proud and the tears well up. Words like honor and bravery aren't just words. These guys are true warrior-poets. a year later, but if you read this, and have not seen it yet. There is a movie called The Lost Battalion. Its from 2001 and shows what this song was about. 600 men sent in and was only one of 3 regiments that took their position, and held for 6 or 7 day. Only 200 walked out when it was over, and because of their stand, the war ended 2 weeks later!

Sabaton - Night Witches: WW2. Russian girls used to repair planes for men, but they wanted to go full airborne, but men wouldn't let them, so eventually girls got planes which wings were made of canvas. Those were planes meant to train, not to fight, but girls loaded those planes with very few bombs 'cause they couldn't take the weight, so they used to fly at night to not to be seen, and when coming close to German camps or outposts they would turn their engines off, so their planes whistled with their canvas wings. That sound would scare the s*** out of the nazis, just before being bombed by those Russian girls that weren't meant to fight. In the end they became an air force unit of their own and proved to be quite better than their male counterparts, and got great results on the Russian front during tge war.

Sabaton now focuses on military/war history and many of their songs are based on real historical events/facts. As e.g. maxmatt already said, the drummer of Sabaton is married to Floor Jansen from Nightwish & they had their first offspring in 2017 when Nightwish was on a break. It was a girl and was named Freja.

I don’t know if it’s been said somewhere in the hundreds of comments. But there was a movie made covering the lost battalion, named The Lost Battalion. There are a few channels that have it uploaded here on KZbin. It covers all the events of the lost battalion along with a total of lost/wounded and awards received at the end. It’s a great movie when you can find it.

The Lost Battalion is the name given to nine companies from the American 77th Division consisting of about 553 people, encircled by German forces on the Western Front during World War I, during an attack carried out in the Aragon Forest in October 1918. Probably 197 American soldiers were killed and 150 recognized for missing or taken prisoner. 194 people broke the German lines and got out of the circle. They were all subordinate to Major Charles White Whittlesey.

Interesting that you discussed PTSD. Major Whittlesey, commander of the "lost battalion" was deeply affected by this action. A Medal of Honor recipient, he was at the internment of first of the unknowns at Arlington cemetery. He leaned in to one of the captain's of his battalion and whisphered he couldn't help but think that the one being interned was one of his men. In the 20's, Major Whittlesey commited suicide by jumping overboard while aboard a ship bound for Cuba.

It wasn't their gear dropped it was Shelling from their own Artillery and they had only 1 homing pigeon left "Cher Ami" was shot out of the air trying to get through to the British Command. The Lost Battalion saw it shot down and figured they were dead. The pigeon got back up and flew on to command before dying and saved the battalion

Short History lesson. October 2, 1918. Major Charles Whittlesey lead the 1-308 Infantry, 77th division, on an assault into the Argonne. Support them was a French division to one flank and two American divisions to their other. What the 1-308 and the other units of the 77th didn’t know was their flanks had been halted. The German forces where able to encircle them. While many other battalions successfully wothdrew, the 1-308 was trapped on hill 198, and forced to dig in. Of his 554-575 men, depending on reports and men displaced from other units during the assault, only 194 where rescues on Oct 8th. 197 where killed and at least 150 captured. They killed over 600 german soldiers, and the german’s focus on the 1-308 lead to the allies successful breakthrough.
