On the actual album there is a song (intro monologue) that explains the battle from a soldier reflecting on the events where each detail brings another element: "The bursting of the machine guns, the sound of the soldier firing a sidearm in desperation, the sound of the bayonet tearing through our human flesh, all these sounds make up a rhythm of death, a symphony of the war." (There is obviously more before this line but this is the main section) I'd check it out if I were you. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2qci2Z_icZ7ecU heres the link.

Sabaton is currently at #1 in my list of favourite bands. I'm so happy I saw them live again weeks before the pandemic hit. You should react to that entire album by the way, it's a killer with so many awesome songs. This song specifically has actual sounds of warfare (like gun sounds) mixed in instead of regular drums to amplify the immersion in the story, that alone should be an indicator of how insanely detailed these guys go about their music right? If you have the time, I highly recommend watching their Sabaton History channel where they pick out individual stories (or concepts) behind their songs, a new episode every week. I've learned more history from them than from 6+ years of history classes in school!

As much as I dig this song, I feel like the story of The Lost Battalion is incomplete without mention of the 442nd Army Regiment that rescued them. They were a regiment of entirely American born Japanese soldiers that took on some of the most dangerous missions in WWII, which made them the most decorated US unit in the war but also with some of the highest casualties. Quick note, 3:19 to correctly rock out to Sabaton, you gotta hammer on your knee.

Such a classic in Sabaton's repertoir! Sadly, I learned after the war Major Whittlesey, the CO of the "Lost Battalion," seemingly committed suicide. He'd received the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Argonne, had lived long enough to see a film made based on him and his men, but apparently never got over the horrors he witnessed and loss of so many of his soldiers. One day he went out on a boating trip, the other passengers saw him go to the rear of the boat and he was never seen again. RIP
