Okay, I have insight into living with a visible disability. I grew up after cancer treatments in infancy (just 9 months) damaged my spine, causing a very visible scoliosis and the loss of all the soft tissue (from radiation damage) on that side of my waist. And I'm a girl... and my sport was swimming. I wouldn't even join a team, because I was too self-conscious. I always swam alone. I *know* about his experience... and as a loving woman, I also know about hers. I grew up (in a *not* very supportive family) with a very visible imperfection on an otherwise beautiful, strong, healthy body, and I *know* his deep feelings of shame and inadequacy. It took me a long time and years of painful, hard work, in counseling and in my own mind, to overcome it. Partly, I just got too old to worry about my beauty any more -- but I had to get there, first! And I had to do it without killing myself or anyone else in the process. But it did ruin every relationship I ever had until I overcame it. The most telling words of all -- his motive in attacking Reeva -- are: *"It's very, very embarrassing"* for people to see him on his stumps. When he cries so bitterly afterward: I know exactly what he was feeling: the terrible black anger squeezing - searing - your heart, when he sits down and cries in humiliation -- he can't help it. It's overwhelming... because he hasn't done anything to overcome those feelings, even still! Those tears -- the ones for himself -- are very real. They're the realest thing about this man. I can see it and feel it. He wanted so much to be *perfect* (way more than I ever did -- talk about a type-A personality...) that much we know... but instead of feeling like a whole, amazing man because of what he achieved (and his otherwise great beauty, which perhaps was really a curse in his case...) his heart was so full of anger, and self-loathing, and alienation. Isolation. It's terribly painful and lonely. But he wouldn't address those feelings, as a responsible person should. Of *course* it's difficult and painful -- agonizing -- to confront those feelings, but it's also the responsibility of a man: to cope with those feelings instead of being in denial, and then -- inevitably! -- dumping it on a woman (I don't mean this aspect is a gender thing; it'd be the same if he were a woman: just, whatever -- a partner) a trusting, generous woman who I'm sure did *not* look down on him at all -- quite the contrary -- as he looked down on himself. But he couldn't see it. I see it: She was trying to help him, to *prove* to him that a ravingly beautiful woman loved and accepted him just as he was. She wanted to give him that gift, and whether they stayed together or not. But he couldn't see it: he couldn't accept her love because he didn't love himself first. But since she 'took on' (in his eyes) *the responsibility of making him feel adequate*, then when he didn't -- it was her fault, of course! He couldn't believe her -- because to do so, he'd have to love himself first! That is the only way -- it was *not* her fault that she couldn't! But he didn't know that. His narcissism made him project all his self-hate and (self) rejection onto her... so when she tried to *leave* him... well, in his eyes, she was 'proving' that she didn't love him, that it was all an act, just to get to be with the big, world famous, star athlete..! I can almost hear the accusations! Hysterical accusations. More than fear: abandonment panic, at that moment, imo... All projection... All bewildering to her. If she'd been older and wiser, she'd have realized sooner that nothing she could do would *ever* be enough to make him accept himself. But she didn't know. If he'd been wiser -- gone to counseling, accepted the responsibility for his feelings -- he'd have seen she could never do that for him. But alas, she was quite naive, and idealistic about love... and I suppose he was, too, in his way. But also very, very angry. Ready to explode. And he did explode when she 'rejected' him -- which she did only because he was telling her she was failing! *Paradoxical, but very human, behavior* -- but from a truly dangerous man. Alas, Reeva. If only she'd known. But I believe this man was a ticking bomb, almost sure to go off on someone soon. She thought she could bring him inner peace: that part makes me so sad. Sad even for him. Because her *lovingness* put her in harms way. That's what I can't forgive. He destroyed her for loving him. Rest In Peace, beautiful soul Reeva.

The sad thing about the Criminal Law is that Barry Roux is an intelligent man who knows, deep down in his heart, what the real truth is. Owing to the nature of his job, he has to disguise his own genuine belief but to defend Oscar's story and make it believable to Judge Marsipa just because he has been paid as Oscar's defending lawyer. This is how the criminal justice system works. I am afraid it is pretty much down to the skills of the lawyer rather than the real truth of a case which convicts or acquits a suspect. Once again, so sad.

My lady's judgement in the original trial made no sense and believed OP's ridiculous intruder story while admitting he was a poor witness. I fear that she will give OP way too much of a lenient sentence this time around, My lady emphasized his disability in her reasoning for her original judgment that I'm not surprised the defense is trying to capitalize on her sympathy by having him wobble and try to look vulnerable without his legs. He didn't show the same awkwardness in his defenses video of his reenactment of the night he killed Reeva. More bad acting from OP

The question is why his girlfriend locked the bathroom door with two mobile phones? From whom was she trying to lock herself out? Why was he trying to get to her with the baseball bat and with no success used the gun firing 4 bullets as if he was hunting a rhinoceros? The neighbours heard that she was screaming when he wounded her hip with one bullet but no he has to fire 3 other shots just to make sure , the final one to the head so she can't press charges against him. He's gun happy the last time he fired the gun his friend took a blame so he avoids a bad publicity , even asked his girlfriend to keep quiet about it. He's not used to take the responsibility for his actions and is hoping to avoid it this time round. Using his disability when it suits him but fit enough to be 24 times Gold medalist. To believe his story you have to be very naive and gullible. Nevertheless, he took a life and now he has to pay instead of trying to wiggle his way out of justice that he's due.

I have equal sympathy and empathy for both sides. It was heartwrenching to see Barry Steenkamp testify and was heartwrenching to see Oscar have to stand so exposed like that in front of the whole world. Nearly everyone in the comments section is ripping Oscar up, yet before you pass judgement, I recommend that you all watch Derren Brown's BBC episode about how its possible to turn a normative person into a murderer. After watching that episode I believe that fully 80% of men in today's extremely ego-based society would have failed with flying colors the test that Oscar was put to that night. There is a huge grey area here. This started out as involuntary manslaughter and progressed in a matter of seconds to murder. As I said, taking into consideration Oscar's truely unique circumstances (fairy-tale life story) most would have failed the test spectacularily. This is not to say that Reeva's murder was OK.
@allanjoshua57998 жыл бұрын
Well, Sorry. You seem to condone and reason out and justify that it was because of the extremely ego-based society that he did this although you end your post with a contradiction that you don't say it is ok.. That is unfortunately not the question at hand. The fact of the matter is very simple.. The Supreme court has found a civilian guilty of murder. Anyone under the law of the land will have to be punished according to what the laws are for the crime committed. Anyone convicted of murder should get 15 years minimum. Disability is not a mitigating factor in sentencing. May be during adjudication of guilt could have held a higher level of relevance and importance. Unfortunately for him, as per the letter of the law, he has been found guilty. Its not about fairly tale life story or any thing else. He is a civilian. Found guilty of murder. It has been adjudicated by the highest court in the land - with way more educated and experienced judges than most civilians that he is guilty of Murder. That is it. He needs to face the consequences of his actions. No privilege. Laws and punishments are for everyone and they should be equal for everyone...
@KNOWHOPE728 жыл бұрын
Allan Joshua Allan, I don't disagree that he should pay for his crime and that it was murder but one cannot look at this unique case in black and white. One MUST take into consideration his absolute unique situation, his lack of judgement (which is why mentally insane individuals cannot be tried for murder. I am not saying he is mentally insane), his anxiety which helped to push him over the edge, and his service to the community. And I am not at all contradicting myself. I do not condone his actions whatsoever. I just understand where they came from. Just because I understand does not mean that I condone.
@allanjoshua57998 жыл бұрын
Right. He had his right to a lawyer and a man is innocent until proven guilty. He was given his right to prove that he was innocent. In fact he paid for one of the most expensive lawyers which is a privilege in itself. A poor man could never have afforded Barry Roux. After careful consideration of his fairy tale life and his unique circumstances, the highest authority in South Africa, found him guilty of murder.. Every other story of his circumstances unfortunately is not relevant at this stage of the process. It could be considered a mitigating factor sure but if the country's judicial system is not a joke, the punishment should fit the crime.. He needs to go in for 15 years... Here is this guy able to argue that he was not guilty but another young woman who had her life ahead of her cannot walk in court to try to get the sympathy of the world. That is the hard truth which people have to understand before feeling sorry for him. Actions have consequences.. For this action, 15 years.. Period. He has already been found guilty of murder.
@KNOWHOPE728 жыл бұрын
Allan Joshua If I had time I would explain what I believe happened that night. He was put to a test that I believe fully 80% of men would have failed with flying colors. Search Derren Brown BBC episode - How to turn a person into a murderer. There are so many aspects to this case that warrant him getting less than the 15 years minimum.
@allanjoshua57998 жыл бұрын
Again, what BBC says and what civilians can happily debate is not what the law is in the land. The test for guilt is objective not subjective although the subjectivity might be considered before declaring guilt. What has happened in this case is that, the supreme court, the most powerful court in the land has found him guilty of murder... Debating guilt is literally futile and silly...

It takes him at least 25 seconds to put on his prosthetic legs. Also, in his affidavit, he says very clearly that after firing the shots, he was worried about the lack of reply from Reeva and went to to check on her in the bedroom. When he found that she wasn't in bed, he returned to the bathroom and tried to open the door, but it was locked. So, he "rushed" into the bedroom to call out for help on the balcony. Then, he put on his prostethic legs and "ran" back to the bathroom, where he tried to kick open the door of the cubicle.

YOUR comment is IGNORANT! maybe locking a toilet DOOR of the main bathroom is something you would do where you're from or how you behave around other humans you associate with (man or women) when you are dating someone for 3 months and are in love etc. If you had to lock yourself in a toilet cubicle from that person? what are you doing there? you would have to ask yourself! Celebrating valentine's day ~ that's not how it works even if you have to use the toilet! A CRASS and SHAMEFUL comment! not FUNNY or Clever! SHAME.

@whitestrip8 жыл бұрын
There is no proof that the judge has been bribed. However, there is proof that the Steenkamp family charges up to $50.000 for an interview. $25.000 for photographic rights, of the ceremony in which they scattered Reeva's ashes onto the ocean.

*Oscar Pistorious!* *Something else that I can see!* I know that Oscar was shown on his stumps today and after he walked for quite some time, he knelt on a cushion because the weight of his body was too much. If this is the case, then how is it that Oscar was able to walk down the LONG passage way to the restroom, holding a gun while on his stumps and holding onto the wall. Oscar was holding onto things in the courtroom and he wasn't able to hold up that long, so he knelt on a cushion. This is why I sincerely believed from the beginning that Oscar DID have on his stumps while shooting BUT he KNELT DOWN while shooting. I'm not trying to be mean but I just felt let to comment on this! God knows that I have no malicious feelings towards Oscar. I just want justice to be served. Take a look at the post attached in this post okay. Make sure you check it out but be careful for graphic material. Reeva is shown DEAD & BLOODY with GUN SHOT WOMBS on her! www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3642439/Judge-ALLOWS-graphic-crime-scene-pictures-Reeva-Steenkamp-public.html

Roux asked O to do a cricket bat demo on the door without his legs on. Why didn’t Nel do a gun demo at the same time to ascertain if O shooting stance matched up to the bullet holes. He only had to be an inch or two out to make a dramatic difference
@HaveYouHeardMe8 жыл бұрын
Rob Fell Probably because Mr Nel knew that we would have another trail because Oscar will probably start shooting again. lol Nel will likely do so but I don't understand why Mr. Roux is fighting for Oscar to NOT go back to Prison. The min is 15 years. I think Roux is trying to get Oscar to do time at his uncles house. That's ridiculous.
@robfell22658 жыл бұрын
Another thought just wafted into my brain. If as O would have us believe he is so unsteady on his stumps then surely firing that powerful gun four times in the dark would blow him flat on his arse. Did they check the ceiling ? Another small point . If O fired in the dark then he would have been blinded by muzzle flashes and deafened but only ever mentioned being deafened. The lights were on ! If they had argued ---------- The lights were on !

They shouldn't make him walk on his stumps for pity - They're trying to get him house arrest, not prison and playing on sympathy! Warning yell, warning shot, one shot, not one, two, three, four...Not knowing that whoever was there - If for some insane reason he didn't 'know' it was Reeva he KNEW he was going to kill someone and now they know they can only play on the pity card, poor Oscar! No, its poor Reeva. She's dead. Oscar isn't. Legs or not, intent or not, its still murder and murderers end up in prison, not sitting on the sofa with your gun and new girlfriend in tow in luxury still - Watch Reeva's father's testimony and then say poor Oscar

Oscar shud get an Oscar for his acting to luk vulnerable n sad for reeva and fake tears..he didn't show any sympathy to reeva while he was killing her..so judge masipa-- the court is not for showing sympathy for a liar killer its for the justice. He didn't let reeva to live her life so he doesn't hav any right to live..i have seen his video walking on his stamp n carrying his sister he lukd very strong there..he shud get the full punishment for murder..he is a strong man that's why he was the fastest blade runner..the story to kill an intruder even a child will not bliv dat..rot in jail and rot in hell mr op

Oscar was in the process of being illuminated, unfortunately he didn't qualify for it. I think this game is too dangerous for the public Leave it just the way it is before some other girl also gets killed. Oscar can't handle extreme preasure,screaming,fights etc.

The only person to blame for this entire protracted heartbreaking court drama is the Judge Marsipa. She has allowed this obvious plain acting by Oscar to cover up his horrendous act of murder towards Reeva. Judge Marsipa showed sympathy towards Oscar and bought his story which any sensible person on Earth would never buy. If Judge Leach had presided over the original trial, it would have been game over pretty quickly with a verdict dolus directus and life imprisonment. Sadly this Marsipa has the power to allow Oscar's garbage to linger on for this length of time causing so much more pain to Reeva's family. My verdict is Marsipa is guilty of poor management of the entire case and should not be allowed to have any further dealing with the case. Please save any more pain inflicted on Reeva's family by stopping Marsipa any more appalling handling of the case. All of these are caused by one Judge Marsipa. So sad.

He murdered his girlfriend on valentines day, it aint rocket science. Judge Leach should take charge, this is a white on white murder case in SA so we need a white male judge and not the opposite.

Steven Steven and Kwok Kan , it may have escaped both your attention but this trial is taking place in Africa. And if you are suggesting that criminals should only be judged by their own racial group, perhaps whites in South Africa should re-locate to their countries of origin. Further, perhaps the same rules should apply in other countries as well and, as well as racial considerations, perhaps there should be Jewish and Muslim courts to try Jews and Muslims or protestant and catholic courts, or even gender specific courts.

I never understood why he didn't check that Reeva was safe in bed next to him before he picked up the gun.
@whitestrip8 жыл бұрын
It was a hot night and Oscar had trouble sleeping. As he sat up in his bed, Reeva was lying next to him and asked him if he couldn't sleep. Oscar got up, brought in the fans from the balcony, and drew the blackout curtains. It is believed that Reeva must have silently gone to the toilet while his back was turned to the room. So when he heard the noise emanating from the bathroom, he was under the impression that it was an intruder in his home. In his mind, Reeva was still safely in bed. He had not heard her leave the room.
@Sparrowdean8 жыл бұрын
RedPanda Regardless of blackout curtains, it was light enough in the room for him to see her jeans on the floor and to use it to cover the light on his music system. That being the case, how come he didn't notice that the bed was empty when he returned to the bedroom for his gun? Furthermore, even the defence's expert said that there was ambient light entering the bedroom with even the curtains drawn and his ex-girlfriend testified that Oscar never kept his bedroom in complete darkness. And, why didn't he think it odd that, in spite of his screaming and shouting at her to get down and to call the police, she never once murmured a word? And how could he not notice that the bed was empty, when he went to fetch the gun from under it?
@clairduffy608 жыл бұрын
+RedPanda Ha! He heard 'someone in the bathroom' which is further away and yet he didn't hear Reeva get out of bed. Really?

Nel has made a good case to ensure Masipa knows it's the duty of the court to sentence him to no less than 15 years. It's all he can do. Masipa knows she messed up. I'm guessing 15 years without parole to include time already served so he'll be in for 14 years. Masipa will seriously piss me off, if it's any less. And jeez, his brother Carl and uncle Arnold are seriously annoying. Anyway with a brain cell of a snail (and it's recently been found out they have only two) can see all the bullshit. Fair play to Barry Roux. Tough job to defend someone like that when you know he's guilty.

seen Oskar's uncontrollable reaction when Kim said that "Reeva liked him, but did not love him" ? .... that's probably the one thing that haunts his mind because that's probably one of the last things Reeva told him before getting shot in that cubicle. The rest of his burglar story is nothing but BS. Whatever will be decided by the judge is ultimately irrelevant ; Reeva's parents condemmed him already by having the pictures of her wounds released to the public ; his name will forever be linked to his shooting his "girlfriend" (or probably "percieved possession") no matter what happens to him, or what he does. He's done. Rightly so.

No words can describe the pain for both families and what they are going through as grief is an awful process. A retrial IS correct, yet both sides have gone too extreme to make their points proven through global media. Absolutely no need for Reeva to have her dignity exposed without her choice or voice, we have all read and heard enough to know the extensive damage caused. We DO NOT need pictures. Equally no need to expose a disabled person to make him look more vulnerable to try prove not committing murder. Anyone with a gun in their hand has an ability to kill. Killing is murder, and he killed - simple. Also is Oscar is getting secretly endorsed again by Nike........if so its absolutely appalling!? In court at a point when he knows he's being exposed without his legs he's top and bottom in their brand and too for the ITV interview coming up.
