The New Norm blew up on Twitter last week for being the self-proclaimed "first adult animated sitcom on X". In reality, it's one of the most unfunny things I've ever seen in my life but what IS funny is what the internet did to the Norm fandom following its release...

Same with Birchum. That show is big in the queer community. I don't know if the "woke" genuinely enjoy it, are hate watching it ironically, or are actively trying to coopt things made to hurt them by embracing them, but whatever the case, I love it. I can just imagine the conversation. "Hey, woke libtards, what do you think of this! It's so offensive and mocking, right?" "This is awesome! I love it!" "Wait, no, that's not how..." "I'm going to draw the main character and that other teacher kissing, they're totally gay for each other" "No stop!"

this is, not ironically, healthy to watch, like, "ok, you don't agree or believe in the LGBT cause, cool, but at least respect the way I want to be called" It reminded me of some older relatives, who don't understand some concepts, some even use one or another offensive word, but out of ignorance rather than to be really offensive, but they won't yell or attack you for being who you are.

King of the Hill was also really good with LGBTQ issues, including trans issues. Peggy is mistaken for a female impersonator at a shoe store by one of their customers, a drag performer. At first she's horrified for being "confused for a man," until her friend teaches her that femininity and womanhood don't just come in "dainty" bodies, but strong proud women "who only need one name," (the great divas, Barbra, Liza, Diana...) And Hank doesn't really understand the whole situation, but he is supportive of her and never comes across as hateful or bigoted. This was what, 20 years ago??
@xBloodxFangx
@xBloodxFangx 2 ай бұрын
The show is very good at portraying its main character, Hank, as ignorant and perhaps a little closed minded set in his ways but not a bigot. He even stands up for Dales gay father and tries to reconnect them from a fight.

@slashb7836
@slashb7836 2 ай бұрын
Another big point in King of the Hill's favour is he can be wrong. Like the episode where he turns a high quality food co-op (that he only originally joined to be able to buy the actual delicious food they sold as opposed to low-quality mass output garbage from the larger grocery stores) into a profitable business that gets bought out by a large grocery brand. He did not understand the assignment, and his (quite conservative) approach blew up in his face and he had to return to bland supergrocer food as a direct result of his actions. He's a fairly reasonable and kind-hearted man, and him being set in his ways is both a weakness and a strength. He's a character, not just a stand-in
@animeotaku307

As someone who was raised *deeply* conservative, this show really does give you a deep dive into how conservatives think/view the world. For example the "government program" in-universe that puts LGBTQ+ people in the households of the anti-woke crowd to re-educate is 100% nonsense from a realistic standpoint, but conservatives really do fear that it's gonna be shoved "in their faces" any day now and they'll be forcibly reeducated and made to become 'woke'. Ultimately this comes from projection like so many things, cuz they wanna force their views on everyone else. They justify that by saying "Well 'The Left' was gonna do it first, so we have to be preemptive and do it to them before they can!" even though it was never gonna happen and it was purely something inside their own minds from day one. Also it's a shame Saberspark didn't bring up why Non-binary Chaz didn't drink the beer: Because they're under 21; yet it's portrayed as if them refusing that is somehow the actually 'offensive' thing in that situation. It reminds me of how in Mr. Birchum, the 'woke teacher' turned in the titular Mr. Birchum, for using CHILD LABOR, and said 'woke teacher' was the one portrayed as the bad guy for doing it! I find it hilarious that they clearly understand the concerns of AI taking over, yet treat those concerns as a punchline, even as they themselves are almost certainly USING AI just so they don't have to pay people. Once again 'swing and a miss' from conservatives. It's also really weird to me that in most of these episode descriptions is how (nonbinary) Chaz is specifically pointed out, as if somehow THAT is the sole char everyone will want to know all about, and how they relate to each episode. Ultimately shows like The New Norm (which the title is the only thing remotely clever about this show), Mr. Birchum, etc will never 'get' is that the truly 'anti-woke' crowd won't be satisfied with shows like this. Because the shows still *acknowledge* the LGBTQ+ community *exists* at all, and the bigots don't want that. Showing that those groups exist is still 'woke' to them, no matter how much the joke is about how stupid "Leftists and minorities" are. At the end of the day, the only thing that satisfies the bigots on the right is the complete ERASURE of anyone who doesn't look, think, believe, and act like they do. This is also why at the end of the day, the so-called 'conservative comedy' fails and falls flat, because conservatives don't want to have to acknowledge there's people who aren't like they are, and they can't stand that such people exist (and are allowed to exist), which is why they're turned into punchlines and strawmen to dehumanize them and not see them as 'being' people worthy of consideration.

@@KasumiRINA same shit happened in a fantasy game I play. Conservatives flipped their shit when they found out the church didn’t suppress gays. “Oh yea we live in a world where there are dragons and gryphons, elves, dwarves, demons, mages. Cities that have millions of residents when the largest city in all of Europe at the time had only 60k. Centralized bureaucracy at the height of feudalism, blue water seafaring before the Caravel, talking animals, etc, etc, etc. But no, the gays are what you have a problem with. I can understand the idea of “there would not be much racial diversity in the Middle Ages” But that only works if it’s a planet with the same technological limitations that we had. 28:18 Some context for this episode of All in the Family. The wife character Edith was so shaken by the murder of their trans friend that they actually start to question their faith in God. For most of the episode she's the religious center of the family, so for her to go "I can't believe in a god that would let something like this happen" is pretty significant. It was also asking the conservative Christians of the audience to consider if their supposed hatred of trans people to the point of justifying murder was so "divine" if it causes so much pain.

New Testament is pretty clear on throwing the first stone (don't), but if we go OT (then the religion would be Judaism not Christianity), and capital offenses would be things like stayin late at work friday afternoon. Unlike all human laws that Bible includes, Commandments are actually written on a stone and given by God, so Sabbath is a bigger deal than someone being gay (entire Deuteronomy and Leviticus are laws NOT by God but of the land, at the time - none of them were kept by Jesus time, hence the catch 22 questions Pharisees asked Him).

You can do something that doesnt feel degrading” (note: if you are happy with your sex work, I’m happy for you. The themesong for All In The Family quite literally makes fun of Archie's cognitive dissonance with the line "Didn't need no welfare state" followed a few rhymes later by "Seems like we could use a man like Herbert Hoover again." Herbert Hoover made the Great Depression worse and kept the economy of the English speaking world low all the way until 1947 (yes, really, fifteen years after Roosevelt replaced him) because he refused to take the necessary measures to alleviate it in 1930. Funny thing, I was the reverse. As a kid, when Family Guy came out, I thought it was disgusting and kind of horrifying. KOTH was annoying sometimes, because Hank was so stubborn, Peggy was so delusional, etc, but I still ultimately still had a real respect for it, because it had such depth and a lot of genuine heart. Characters were always fucking up, but still doing their best to make things right. There was just no substance or anything of value to gain from FG. And to this day I'm still disgusted by the "Shut up Meg" trope. And the thing is, I even watched South Park as a kid, when it was new, and while it had some seasons that were just as bad as FG, there were countless episodes that actually DID have important lessons to teach, even while being shamelessly crass. I'm still stunned and admiring of that episode where Stan admits to Token(Tolkien) "I understand now. I understand that I'll never understand what it's like to be black." "Exactly." It seems to be an affectionate parody on Americans. Like we only see those suburban weirdos on TV, either in true crime show where they kill each other for a shotgun, or in dystopian movies like Stepford Wives... there is NO neutral-positive depiction of primitive America outside of King of the Hill I've seen, it's either movies showing New York or San Francisco being cool, or shows about chainsaw mcMurderface from Kickapoo, Nebraska. P.S. South Park also parodies US mountain ruritania, but their take is not really nice, if anything, it's pretty mean in roasting the dwellers, who are a bunch of American stereotypes. They're just good at it, and had enough twists... also came during gross-our cartoon era with Happy Tree Friends and Ren & Stimpy so early seasons aren't even satire but poorly drawn gore.

KOTH’s whole thing is that yes Hank and his friends are old fashioned conservative men entering a new age and about them having to make peace with that and accept change. They’re all such endearing characters because their hearts are in the right place no matter what, and even when they’re stuck in old ways they’re still making an effort to be open minded and kind. Hank Hill is the father you want and Dale, Bill, and Boomhauer are the friends you want.

He was very progressive and a liberal. The show featured racial issues and even had stories about homosexuality and rape. I recall one episode of King of the Hill where Dale started thinking his son wasn't his child but rather an alien human hybrid, even though it's been obvious for years his son is the biracial child of another man his wife cheated on him with. And while Dale's melting down, Hank finally snaps him out of it by playing into Dale's delusions but rather correctly noting that it was Dale who raised the boy as a father, and even if the father is an extraterrestrial, that doesn't mean Dale's efforts and feelings for his son aren't way more important than his genetics. So somewhere between the ravings of a lunatic and a desperate straight man, the point was that being a father isn't about genetics but actually taking care of a child. Today's conservative climate would lose their shit over a textbook case of "being cucked". But back then, it was sort of a counter point to Murphy Brown as a single mother in its way.
