@Christopher-cr7pw4 ай бұрын
Finally someone talks about it. Both the range for the truck and the range extension both suck on range. Tesla needs to redesign the truck battery management system.
@omarastacio39394 ай бұрын
If they improve the density( or just use the extra space that breakdowns has shown exists) with the new cells, they will just place them as part of the battery pack and offer higher range models in future iterations. This makes the extender only viable for early adopters and people who purposely order a lower range option with plans to extend later. As such a niche item, it makes the adapter DOA. They may still make it, but with all the other issue you stated, it will not make mass appeal.
@pebmetsАй бұрын
For $16,000, your $100,000 pickup truck losses 1/3 of the bed space and now the range they promised for the extender will be 25 miles less than advertised.

The killer app for the range extender is backcountry operations, especially in very cold weather. This is something I'm very interested in for a business venture where having the Cybertruck's off-road capability plus large battery to run a mobile base camp for electric-powered devices is very compelling, but with the huge caveat that if you are in a remote area to start with, in the middle of winter, you're going to be lucky to find a Level 2 charger in a heated garage that will let you charge at all. And then on top of that, you're heading into potentially battery-eating terrain with reduced efficiency due to the temperature, and you want to keep a bunch of humans and machines warm and powered up for an extended period. The range extender is going to reduce the need for a gas generator or other ICE-based solution in this scenario, with very few drawbacks the Cybertruck doesn't already have.
@stevehuthman7414 ай бұрын
My Rivian R1T (dual motor max pack) with it's 410 miles of EPA range has so far turned out to be the best compromise between price, range and efficiency. I bought the truck under the “old” pricing and also got the full $7500 tax credit so my net price was about $72K plus tax, etc. Pulling a small trailer (2600 lbs) I get about 200-250 miles of range depending on conditions. The Cybertruck doesn't have the range unless you pay the extra $16K and the Chevy has the range but is terribly inefficient.

It was never advertised as removable. The price is pretty good if you consider it 3-4 power walls you are adding to your home PowerShare network. Pays for itself. But tis is really only for people that just tow. The dry electrode is all about price not density. I think they need the dry cathode process to make the range extender financially viable.

You don’t even necessarily need to go 470 miles in one go. Leave at 100%, drive for 3-4 hours at 75mph only gets you 225-300. Pull in at 53-36%. Charge for a regular 15-20 minute stop get another 100 miles. Repeat until you’re doing regular ev charging from the bottom of pack or are done driving for the day. I know for me driving 4 hours straight doesn’t really happen. 3 is a decent trip in one go and that leave a lot of room left on the battery. You might drive 10 hours a before you see under a 20% SOC.

::My uneducated opinion:: i think the range extender was introduced because tesla was floundering with the 4680 and they wanted to hedge their bets incase they abandon it. Ive seen recent revelations that the 4680 has made a big leap forward and i think the extender will be scrapped. The extender never made sense. Especially when sandy exposed that theres still space in the battery for more cells. Adding silicone laced 4680, and filling the pack might get you to that 400+.

Nobody is towing 450 miles a day, 365 days a year...or even once per week every week of the year, so charging at home most days, with a range of over 300 miles is all that most people need. Occasional Supercharging for the CT is still cheaper than buying gas every week for an ICE truck. Most towing of utility trailers, small campers, boats, motorcycles, ATVs, and PWC are done regionally near home. People aren't towing those small trailers cross country all day, every day. The CT is also perfect for Police Departments, Fire Departments, fleet service, delivery services, lawn care services, tradespeople and anyone working near home, which is what most people do most of the time. For extra heavy and large RVs, toy haulers and heavy equipment and towing long distances, people choose heavy duty diesel trucks. The CT is shorter in both length and height than a midsized Toyota Tacoma Double Cab pickup. The CT is a bit wider and a lot heavier.

It's all about cost. Gm are going to loose money anyway so the silveado will be overloaded with cells to get a ridiculous range. Clearly the cybertruck at the moment is costing too much to build. The munroe teardown shows its not close to optimised yet. To stand any chance of reaching profitability Tesla have reduced battery size and range to reduce cost until enough of it can be redesigned and optimised to reduce costs and until dry battery cathode brings 4680 costs down. In addition the founders edition $20k price hike. Again to reduce loss and get close to profitability. The range extender may just be a bluff to appease. Consider this Once the 4680's are solved. Anyone wanting the range extender still is instead offered a replacement pack with the true cyber dry cells that actually gives the originally promised 500 mile range for just $10,000 more 😮😮

Tesla has made their boat thinking 300 miles of range is enough, and for S3XY, that has been true. But this is supposed to be a truck. If they had gone with 400 miles of range, then offered a range extender to 525, I dont think people would have complained as much. Im not sure what i can use a 300 mile truck for, and I cant lose 1/3 od the bed to get their, I have to have store material in their. Its pretty clear they never intended this to be a work truck, and they vastly misjudged what people who are looking to by a truck are looking for.

It's easy to sell 20k trucks when you have a 2M order backlog. Let's wait till the orders have normalized before comparing. They will still probably sell everything they make for a year or two, but I think the line of people willing to pay 80k or 100k for a truck that came up 200 miles short on range is much shorter than they realize.
@dvader32634 ай бұрын
Most work trucks are used regionally near where the pickup truck owner lives. Do people who work, make their money by spending all day on the road driving? No, they don't. People who work, make money by working all day, not by towing all day. Anyone who owns a truck and uses it for any trade knows this. Trucks are used mostly near home, where people live. For this, the CyberTruck is all most people need in a truck. People who tow large RVs cross country will continue to purchase heavy duty diesel trucks.
