I’m crying in utter despair because my cousin secretly put our great-great grandfather’s military swords in a storage unit in California, then neglected to pay the bill. He was never supposed to have those swords in the first place! My heart is broken 😭 Somebody, somewhere has my family heirlooms. If anyone ever happens to see one or two military swords *please please please* tell me right away 🙏 and we’ll see if they’re the right ones, and if yes, I will give a spectacular reward $$$$$$$. I’ll give anything to have my heirlooms safely in my custody again!

@catT52363 жыл бұрын
That's exactly what I thought. Definitely a secret man-cave. Though I'm guessing he had to abandon it when his wife found out he was paying for a storage unit she had no idea about. Though given what I've seen on true crime shows a secret man-cave is probably the least terrifying option.

I'm a couple of years late but I really liked this episode! I manage a self storage facility and I am also a huge comic book nerd, the comic book shop owner didn't lowball you, the 90's were a terrible era for the the comic book industry. The majority of the time that storage units that go up for auction are full of junk and stuff that the tenant no longer wants, so you actually scored a decent unit. Live auctions are becoming a thing of the past, the trend now is posting them online.

The thing that bothers me about this is: sometimes, storage companies are shady as hell, and they sell units without talking to the person who rented them. That's actually something that happened to me. I had a whole collection of books I had received as a child, and they were in great condition. I have no idea who got them or what they did with them. My husband and I kept up with payments, but that didn't matter to the person who screwed us over.

I use to work at a storage facility, and based off of my personal experience, this looks like a unit a homeless man was renting to A) Keep his belongings in and B) Live in. There was once one unit we cleared out where the renter had put up sheetrock within the unit to create walls and separation, essentially creating his own home within the unit. With the way the pins are pushed into your unit's walls with the hats hung up, the clothes, the shopping cart...it all adds up.

I had a classmate in one of my college classes who bought a storage unit with boxes full of ANIME FIGURES for about $165. She was able to pay off that amount by selling a single gundam/gunpla box and then made a profit of about ~$900 after selling about 10 figures. She still had two other boxes to sort through and sell as well. Only reason she told me about it was because she was a middle aged white woman who had no clue about anime and decided to ask the only asian she knew at the time LOL. Lucky for her she asked the right weeb. Hopefully you do another video like this! I love watching people buy storage lockers.

She left everything she ever owned to her best friend and when she died her friend put all her stuff into 8 lockers ans paid for them for 27 years until her herself died. She was born in 1904 so you could only imagine the antiques. Loads of cloths, paper work, pictures, furniture. It was amazing looking at this womans stuff.

Rando comment from someone who has worked 7 years un the California storage business: Auctions are canceled all the time because the owners of the unit are legally allowed to come pay and reclaim up to the second the auctioneer says "sold." During an auction I carry a walkie-talkie so I know to shut down a sale immediately if it is paid for last minute, which happens a lot. Usually a settlement even as low as 50% is going to be more than what we make auction, so if the owner wants to show up, make a final payment, clear their stuff out in 24 hours, and let us have the space back, it's in our best interest to make a deal. If a lot of people pay off early enough so there are only a couple small units left, managers will cancel auctions so they don't build a negative reputation with buyers. A lot of people turn over units professionally and you want to make sure you attract the pros, so disappointing auctions lose you money in the long run, it's better to just shut it down and add those to the next one. Also, our only option legally in CA to reclaim an abandoned unit is to auction the items after going through a very complex sequence of events. The account usually goes through a warning process, then pre-lien, which is a certified letter and a fee, the lien, which is another certified letter and a fee, and then after enough units are 30 days past lien you reach the lock cut point. Unlike Storage Wars, in CA we are legally required to cut the locks ahead of time and inventory the units. Most places will hire a bonded third party to come cut the locks so that the owners can't be accused of stealing from the units pre-auction. (There are many stories of storage employees sneaking items out of pre-auction units, then getting caught when the owners pay up at the last second.) It gets a bit weird here, because until the unit is either sold or paid for, we are not allowed to "cross the threshold," but we are required to do an inventory. What this ends up equating to is a list of items we can see from the door like "boxes, rug, babyseat, trash bags, tool box". We are then legally required to take that list and publish it in a local newpaper along with the name of the person being auctioned and the auction dates (no, seriously, that's a law) which usually ends up being a legal journal of some kind because they fill the requirements and are cheap. Then after all that and two more weeks, you can legally auction the contents IF the owner doesn't arrive at the last second. Technically you are allowed to perform your own auction, however it is a lot safer legally to pay an actual auctioneer to do it for you. They are bonded, often advertise or have a loyal following, and know how to drive up prices. It gets so much more complicated but I'll stop myself there. So um. That's probably why your auction was canceled.

That storage unit is a time capsule for a late-90s/early-2000s comic book/pop culture nerd. As a member of that tribe myself, I can immediately visualize the type of person who would have owned that storage unit, though by all appearances he (it was DEFINITELY a male) was trying to position himself as a 'cool' nerd, as indicated by the Sixers jersey, denim jacket and hat.

@@JotaC Comicbooks just aren't as popular as they were 30+ years ago. $1 bin comics are in the $1 bin for a reason...they're hard to sell and a retailer is lucky to break even with the cost of storage, and lugging boxes and boxes of them from one convention to another, and even then many of them never sell. As a former collector myself, the vast majority of 90s books are basically good for wrapping fish.
