Coming back was a good call. Working on Athena full time during the shutdown is actually the best thing you could do and one of the very rare oportunities in these times to actually make something good out of this crisis. Instead of loosing a year, you might actually gain a few month this way.

As hard as it might be for you returning ro Europe, I dare say that we are all glad you did. I told my kids that there won't be "Mads" for a long time as you left before the shutdown and they were bummed about it. Now yesterday at night I found out that you posted a new video and I was so happy about it that I secrectly watched it before hitting the berth. Kids will be happy about the news. Thank you for the distraction now also in this weird period. I wish you all the best and lots of material deliveries that will arrive at your boatyard. Happy to see you being so productive

Big Ron Just wanted you echo your sentiment! I had remembered Mads mention he was going to be with Eva, and with everything going on last weekend I completely missed there was no video.We live in Germany and Sail Life has become a much anticipated Sunday Evening ritual for me! So I am quite selfishly very pleased you’re home safely, Mads!! Take some much deserved rest, keep in close virtual contact with Eva. I know you wish you could be together and keep her safe but I’m sure she agreed with your decision to press on and shoot for your deadline of moving in together on schedule. I applaud you both for making a tough call there! Please stay safe as well and I’m sure we all will be wishing for both of your safety! There are also simple bidets that look like an upgraded kitchen sink spray gun. I saw them a lot in Thailand and other Pacific coast countries. You can install one of those anywhere and they also make cleaning the head amazingly easy.

Been using that idea for 20 years. My wife was Brazilian and use to a bidet, but when we started traveling in a motorhome it came with that setup to wash out the bowl. My wife asked me what that was for and I told her it was her butt washer and so it became one. She also had me install one on every toilet in ever house we lived in after that. Cheap, quick to use, more sanitary, no hemorrhoids and refreshing, also cuts wayyyyyy down on toilet paper usage.

Great video, makes life seem almost normal watching this. There's a few comments below about square dowels, or just ends, to help locate the dowel, but angle the slot so it's sloping back slightly. A bit of trial and error here but you don't want to make it fiddly to insert. A piece of small diameter stainless tube would be better as it won't want to grab the toilet roll - lots of torn sheets. Amazing how a small item like this attracts so much attention. Perhaps this is why the US is running out! Stay safe everyone.

Hi Mads, good to see you back home again. I think the width of toilet paper can be a bit wider than here in Europe, but the diameter certainly varies greatly around the world, so maybe you should have it in your consideration. Another issue you might want to consider is the hygiene around the box for toilet paper. You can risk that that the opening to the toilet roll might be contaminated with a small amount of stools. You know, sometimes it can be quite challenging to clean the behind when there are a bit of waves. ^_^
@markbernier84344 жыл бұрын
I suspect you will get 1005 output from your alternator. Point to consider, make the belt tensioner independent of the alternator mount. Many belt and sheave failures are due to misalignment when trying to make tensioning and mounting in one device. Also, cogged powerbands are the way to go for driving this sort of thing. Glad you are back. I feel for Eva.

Re douche arrangement for heads. We like a bidet too for the reasons you mention in the latest video. Our solution was to fit the 'Whale RT2498 Mixer Tap & Shower Combo' to our heads basin. They behave like normal taps but the tap then pulls out on its pipe and becomes a douche! Brilliant - they work for us. N.B. They definitely don't like frost.

Nice to see you are back safe and sound, Mads. I was beginning to fear that you were going to be stuck in the US unable to continue with Athena or producing videos. Here in Stockholm we are not putting the boats in the water until april.... and we are fearing that it will not be possible cause the authorities are going, slowly but surely to shut down the society. Without a boat to sail or your videos to watch what is there left to do?!! :D Allt gott!

My thought was that you have a hatch above the toilet paper holder which you lift and drop the rolls into. That way you have multiple rolls. Yes you need to cut a square hole in the top of you nice box. You can add a ski jump full width to the bottom front of the holder to stop it coming out in high seas. There will need to be a stop system so the storage rolls don’t touch the active roll then it’s perfect. André

Good to see you've home now, Mads, despite being apart from your number one squeeze. I am very surprised that you didn't have to go into self-isolation in your home upon returning from the US; most countries are having their citizens do so for 14 days upon returning from the US - which is now the epicentre for the pandemic.

Glad to hear you made it back in one piece, suck you can't be with your girl in these times and that you had a bit of hell getting beck. All I would say about the toilet paper holder is to make some kind a spring hold down for the spindle, I can see in ruff water it popping out and then rolling about, which "could" turn in to a danger if having to rush through the cabin.
@whotknots4 жыл бұрын
I am Australian and have never seen an actual bidet, so far as I know they do not exist anywhere here. If you resort to a DIY solution for a bidet could you make one that folds down out of the wall behind the head and rests on the lid of the toilet? I imagine it might work like one of those old-fashioned pull out hand basins they used to have on trains!

Thanks for making the video, lends to a sense of normalcy. Bidet would mean less toilet paper but more water use and quicker fill of the holding tank. I guess ok if you are off shore, but more pump outs if in marinas. An uninsured hospital stay in the USA would ruin you financially, smart to come back to Denmark.

Welcome back. The sink is looking nice. In the US TP width seems to be shrinking , in a few years they will advertising 200 roll packs for the price of a 20 package, each roll will be 50cm wide. Where are you going to mount the generator? One safety note. I noticed you cross cut part of the TB box using the fence as length stop. Very dangerous, if the board cocks just slightly the blade will grab, pulling the board and your fingers back into the blade. If lucky it will just toss it back at you causing a nice welt on you chest. Don't ask me how I know. It happens so quick, you will see the red stuff before you know anything happened.

Thanks for a great video and thanks for pointing out the pandemic clause in the travel insurance, bet a lot of people didn't know, me included. Guess you've been asked about diesel-electric propulsion? As you work (or worked?) for a company know for its excellence in energy distribution aboard vessels I guess you've thought about that? A 10-20 kW motor driving the prop should be enough for Athena, and if you install enough LiPo's you could free up space in the engine compartment considerably. A 9kVA generator should be sufficient for long time motoring, while the batteries take care of those short term high intensity power requirements.

Re. Your loo roll holder, if you fit a flap to the open side with the pivot at the top, it covers the loo roll (protecting it from splashes) and holds the roll in place. On the lower edge, leave a gap to pull the sheets out. You’d need to put some magnetic catches or similar on the flap to stop the roll opening the flap when you pull. You might also need to smooth out/polish the bottom face and the inside of the flap so the roll can rotate without breaking the tissue as you pull. Not my idea. Brunswick Marine did this on several of their marques. I can send you a photo of the plastic-fantastic version if you’d like, but I’m sure you can work it out if the idea appeals to you.

Hey, for once I can share some knowledge with you, I know nothing about boats, fiberglass or sanding but I am a strong advocate for bidet seats. I owned many bidets, from cheap to way too expensive like the Brondell Swash 1400 which sadly started to leak after 3 years, still probably the best but I now own a Alpha iX Hybrid Bidet Toilet Seat which so far I love, seam like a perfect match between useless features and prices. The nice thing about bidet seats is that they run on 120 or 240 and use little power unless you use the seat warmer, although it's a nice feature in Canada, not so sure when cruising in the equator belt. Also, I confirm, this will cut down your TP needs by a lot, we buy ~10 rolls per month for a family of 5 with kids.

Um, dude, there’s a reason why TP rolls have spring loaded center cylinder holders. First time you hit a swell, that roll is going to come bouncing out of there. You need a positive retention mechanism on top of the dowel, at least.
@edwardhovitz17534 жыл бұрын
Change the design of those glue in plates to have a slot the dowel slides into before it comes to rest in a notch as currently designed. Or just use a spring loaded off-center roll holder.

@midgoog24 жыл бұрын
Mads, Have you considered putting a lift up door on the TP holder or possibly a roll top desk type door by glueing strips of wood to a cloth backing ? Either solution would negate the rough seas scenario as described by many in the comments, and spray from the shower in the confines of the head. You really have to wonder what the thought process is that makes people hoard TP and governments declare gunshops as an essential business during a pandemic.😀😊😧☹ Cheers Eric
@Vaasref4 жыл бұрын
It may be my gunsmith formation speaking but putting a leaf spring ending with an "s" shape on one side and making the other side support enclosing the dowel would be more secure. That way you insert the dowel in the hole and then secure it by pushing it past the spring bump. Classic gunsmith loves their leaf springs, particularly for safeties. It seems appropriate to use them here too.
