Sail Cloudy Bay

6 жыл бұрын

s/v Cloudy Bay (Hallberg-Rassy 54) sails 75 miles from Rodney Bay, St.Lucia to Roseau, Dominica with a night stop on the way in Anse Mitan, Martinique. The easterly winds are constantly changing in the lee of the three island’s volcanic peaks; accelerating at their north and south extremities and constant 20kts beam reach in between, leading to a lot of sails adjustments. As we head north to the start of the leeward islands, we are finally off the wind and going like a train! This is how sailing should be while island hopping in the Caribbean.

SMD RC Just about said it all. I too enjoy watching you trim the sails and tweak her to get the last knot. I've learned a lot just watching you. It's also nice to not have blaring music overtaking the natural sounds of the water and the wind. Your camera work is just the best. Keep up the great work, thank you.

Mike thanks for the comment. We do and will continue to add clips where we trim sails and do manouvers. Its clear that our audience likes this kind of footage. We now have a gimbal that we will put on the radar post, so that you can see the 2 of us working together to get CB in the groove.... where we like to be :-)

Fantastic sailing and video of the journey to Russell Bay, and the Dominics. Being a Scotsman, I’m extremely envious of your beautiful yacht and your adventures. Having only ventured up and down the west coast of Scotland I’m normally wearing a jumper or my wet weather gear. Keep the videos coming. Thank you both for my happy night time dreams.

So nice to watch your videos showing of actual sailing, with working and tweaking the sails etc. Your videos are refreshing in that your videos don't get ruined by using overused soundtracks that unnecessarily override the wonderful natural wave and wind sounds and the realities of sailing. You both have a wonderful Hallberg Rassy yacht - a dream yacht. She really sails nicely with a powerful rig for a cruising yacht. I am also really enjoying reading your daily blogs from your website - a very nice site. These videos remind me of my sailing adventures across the South Atlantic and Caribbean Trinidad to USVI back in 2003. Thanks.

Nice sailing video. Being an occasional sailor I've never heard of the Halberg-Rassy before. It kind of reminded me of an Oyster that I had the opertunity to sail on in the BVI a few years ago . It was an 82. Your boat looks very classy . It has elegant lines and what to say of all that teak? Felt as thoug I was right there with you guys. Thanks for the trip!

In mast furling, !!!!!!!!!what do you do when it gets stuck jammed in a gale/you did not use the main traveller to get more downforce on the boom, you said no vang?
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 5 жыл бұрын
Now that we are used the inmast furling and have the technique right, we rarely get it jammed. Not in the last 1 or more anyway. But yes, it is a constant concern that it might one day get jammed with sail out and wind increasing. As for a gale .... we would hope to have is well reefed in way before we got to gale force winds. But, for 2 handed sailing on a boat this sail, slab reefing is out the question. In-boom would probably be my choice if it was not for the total cost or retrofit (new rig and sail needed). The key points are to make certain the boom is at the right level when furling in, such that the battens enter the mast parallel to the mast. We also always pull out the first few metres of the foot by hand, as the hydraulic outhaul is too strong and insensitive.

10 knots ..like a Hallbery Rassy freight train that doesn't want to slow down..! Just curious how your Dorades function when taking water over the bow..do you always turn them facing aft or need to , to prevent large amounts of water splashing and entering in to the dorado opening?
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 4 жыл бұрын
Michael Douglas on theory they can take any volume of water into them because their are floating balls on there that block the vent in case of flooding. But I never risk that if I know we are going to be in a situation with green water coming over the deck. I always ( when I remember!) turn them around. Oddly they have never leaked with green water in them .... but they did once when we had a small amount of rain once!
@michaeldouglas6872
@michaeldouglas6872 4 жыл бұрын
@@SailCloudyBay Thanks Glen..have always been curios about them and watching this particular passage with CB wanted to ask about them. I have seen some of the new HR's now with a low profile dorade type vent, wonder if this is something planned on your next upgrade/refit although I have read some forums that advocated for the more traditional older style vs these new low profile type that supposedly don't actually let very much air flow in.
@SailCloudyBay
@SailCloudyBay 4 жыл бұрын
Michael Douglas the ones they fit to new HRs are simply much cheaper for them to purchase and install ( given they don’t need stainless steel guards around them). The Dorades like our are now optional extras I believe. Luckily, pre the 2008 crash, Cloudy had a lot of things that were standard which are not post-2008 when HR had to do some serious cost cutting to stay in the market.
