Episode 386 : Season 12 : Sailing Australia
Hello Friends,
On this episode we haul up the anchor in 30 knot gusts and sail off into a squally day. We had fantastic sailing wind and the air was warm so the rain didn't bother us much. This turned out to be one of our favorite sailing days of the year! Soon we were approaching Middle Percy Island and got the hook dropped at West Bay.
I had read about Middle Percy Island in the book "Around the World in Wanderer III" by Eric Hiscock from their visit here in 1955. I was eager to see if the old telephone booth from the book was still onsite. We had also heard about the famous Percy Island Yacht Club, which is a simple A-frame structure and were interested to see all of the signs and mementos from cruisers who have visited over the years. We had prepared our own plaque to leave with the collection, a fun nautical tradition amongst cruising sailors the world over.

Great episode, guys! :) At 17m20s you can see the propellor from our yacht "Moonshine" hanging in the Yacht Club. The missing blade is in the bottom of West Bay. Happy travels to you both. From David the bus driver on Maggie Island :)

I might have a big ego after all, but damn how happy I am to read : « and thank you the viewers !» in the intro ! Of course creators need more support than just viewers -and I thank ALL your Patreons for helping you and allowing me to follow your adventures... but I feel less guilty not being able to pay . So THANK YOU ! I love your nonchalante intelligence, your pace, your free spirit , the absence of fake smile- Rhonda included. As Montaigne said : « His quick wit gave the lie to his nonchalant demeanor. » 🧡✨

That was so good, one of the best videos you've made, one of the most terrific places you've visited. The energy from you both, and the area, really was flying 😃 It was quite touching to see all the sailor's mementos, and to watch you place one from you, Rhonda and Triteia in the old shed. Loved the moody weather and sailing in the first part of the video and the melancholy music was just perfect, for a moment i thought I was watching a drama/film. Congrats on making such a wonderful video.

In the 80s the owners had a roughly 37 ft pearl lugger in that lagoon and sold, or traded for work/diesel, pig and goat hides as well as veggies and the wonderful honey. Later, in the era when the island became a part of a drug smuggling route things got interesting too. Curious, did you notice if there were any other plaques post mid 1980s in that smaller original historic shed other than yours?

It's OK Rhonda, about crocs. They're "Maneaters" so you'll be fine. And according to Ben Fogle, English adventurer, a study was done with Nile River crocs, to prove that the surface is the kill zone. Once you're under the surface, you're OK. They are confused when someone is down below. And I believe everything I read. 🤔 Thanks for sharing. Take care.

Hy James one general question....since you ve crossed a lot of oceans already by now....and I know you always say that if you sail certain ocean at the time when its supposed to be done, you wont face huge storms, but how does climate change affect that? Like did you ever hear some cases where things happend though they were not predictable at all in terms of big storms? Thanks!
@SailorJames
@SailorJames 4 күн бұрын
Climate change affects the strength of the storms but it doesn’t (yet) mean it entirely changes the seasons. Hurricane and cyclones are summer storms so in a sense they follow the suns position over the earth. So we won’t have a winter hurricane anytime soon.
