I had one of the most strangest but epic dreams about you guys. I was working on a large ship and we were going along when the Captain screamed over the PA system Delos is ahead of us 2 miles everyone on deck. The intro Song "Ramukani by OneTox" started blaring over the PA System and we all grabbed a beer lined up along the side of the ship and took our clothes off and we made a close pass by Delos Dancing and waving at you guys. What a epic Dream!!

I arrived in Fernando de Noronha in 2008-ish after crossing from Cape Verde on a 53 foot schooner. The feeling of walking on land after 14 days at sea is a weird feeling, as i'm sure you've experienced. Incredibly beautiful place, but also very very expensive compared to the rest of Brazil. We unfortunately had to abandon the boat in Venezuela some years ago after a lot of mechanical issues, as well as leaks in the hull (old ferrocement boat), and no way to fix anything because of Venezuela's increasingly unstable political situation. Was hard to even find a bucket of paint, and we' couldn't import anything. But we're set on buying another boat soon. Your videos are torture, because we reeeaallly want to travel again. Especially these days with Covid-19 and all. But keep'em coming. Your channel is the most "honest" i've found so far, because you show more of the everyday problems of living on a boat for an extended time. Both in terms of problems with the boat itself, customs etc, and the social challenges that comes with being that many people together for a long time. It's not easy, but i appreciate being able to relate to it, as it brings back memories. Cheers

Speaking of sextants, I have my late brother's copy of the 1962 'American Practical Navigator" from his days at the U.S: Naval Academy. It is all about determining location without the tools sailors use these days. At 1500 pages, it was the official reference book for the U.S. Navy. I would be pleased to donate it to Delos if it might be useful, or at least interesting to have onboard.

6:20 There's a wonderful novel, _The Island of the Day Before_ by Umberto Eco, that revolves around the problem of finding the longitude in the 17th century. Sextant is only needed to find the latitude; the longitude is found by comparing the time in your actual position with the time in a reference point.

That shot where you see the hull of Delos underwater while under way made me think: wouldn't it be cool to always tow an underwater camera behind you and see what might show up. Sorta like an underwater dash cam. Just keep it running all the time, and check it every day to see if there's something interesting.
@rogerstone30686 жыл бұрын
Sometimes I imagine what I'd film if I were a guest crew member on Delos, and watching this episode I planned just that - a Go-Pro on a drogue towed behind or alongside the boat, controlled from on board. An underwater drone. One day when the technology and satellite upload speeds are good enough, live webcam streams from Delos would be great.

Thanks for the Love and thanks for the adventures! DO IT! grab the logs of your favorite ancient explorer and see how closely your can make your sightings to your GPS track. Use and old water barometer and a wind up clock. The discipline required to navigate this way was astounding. You will need the book to translate your sextant readings into Lat ond long...but this stuff is a fun way to spend time on a passage. PLUS..when all your tech goes south (as we have seen over the years) you can still make your next landfall with REAL style

@svdelos6 жыл бұрын
hey guys! Depends on if Kazza would let me :) . But seriously if you are comfortable and leave someone onboard that can handle the boat I would probably go for it. Brian
@williambremner90226 жыл бұрын
I hear your concern and it's one that we've pondered many times too. We swam in 9,000+m deep water in the South Pacific between Tahiti and Tonga last year (3 of us in the water and one remaining on board "life-guarding"). We were largely becalmed though but it was a very freaky swim knowing that much water lay beneath us. For 2-up to do this increases the risk a lot. I think it needs to be calm conditions in fine weather to consider doing this as a couple with lots of line dragging astern. We tie off a horseshoe ring at the end of the dragline for extra safety. Cheers, Bill / SY Miss Foxy.

My father was a watch and clock maker for 40+ years. I read that book "Longitude" and enjoyed it very much. You guys can probably relate, being sailors and all, but back then, it was easy enough to determine your latitude when on a ship at sea, but there was no such thing as a mechanical clock that could keep accurate time at sea. Pendulum driven clocks could not keep a regular beat, therefore causing the time to be incorrect. Spring--driven timepieces were not nearly accurate enough to determine your longitude at sea. Harrison not only solved the problem, multiple times, he was also pretty much cheated out of his prize / bounty, until just before, or shortly after, his death. Anyway, that's an excellent book she has and you guys should all read it. I think you'd be able to relate.
