Fact: Friedrich Barbarossa was around 72 when he died in Anatolia
@johnpears95583 жыл бұрын
Wait really
@89Dienekes3 жыл бұрын
@@johnpears9558 Man Barbarossa was a badass. Just a point, Richard never lost a single battle in the 3rd Crusade, completely besting Saladin in every engagement and embarrassing him more than once. And historians mostly agree that Barbarossa was the greatest general of the time. During the trip to the Holy Land he moved through the Byzantine Empire, after getting agreements that he would pass through without fighting. The Byzantine Emperor however didn't trust him so sent his army to ambush him. There was a battle, Barbarossa won. He then went on to completely trounce the Byzantine army, force them to release prisoners to him and agree to let him travel unmolested. So then the next phase of his journey went through Anatolia, he again got agreements to travel through the land years before he entered. The Seljuk Turks were not allies of Saladin, so this should be easy right? No. They attacked him just like the Byzantine, and just like the Byzantine forces he beat them in two very decisive battles and told them to stop making him angry he's just trying to go fight Saladin. So having unintentionally defeated two of the three greatest powers in the region, he brings his Crusading army. The largest best organized of the Crusader armies with the most experienced general at its head. And then he drowns. Much of his army deserts those that don't sort of bounce around the various leaders not knowing exactly who's in charge.

The story of Barbarossa's death you've told isn't the version I've heard. The version I heard was that he was taking a bath in that river where he drowned and all of a sudden he had a seizure in the middle of the river and drowned. Either way, his cause of death was the same: a freak accident. Much like how Genghis Khan was killed by a freak accident after his horse got spooked during a hunting trip and it threw him off (he was roughly 65 when this happened, so he suffered some internal injuries that didn't heal properly and ended up dying from those injuries).
