Yeah, l learned a long time ago that she wasn't a fan. I also remember a rumor that she really did the voicework in a Simpson's parody of the show. Interesting detail I read about Madeline Sherwood; reportedly she participated in Civil Rights marches. I'd love to see footage of that!

Actually, Sybil put her on the path to stardom. I saw her in a 1972 interview with Dick Cavett, she told him her goal was to find a movie where she could be challenged by a nude scene. Keep in mind, that some actors in the early 70s thought nude scenes could demonstrate their loyalty to the craft. by getting out of their comfort zones and facing their fears.

It's strange how some actors hate the roles they are loved for having played, especially multi-season shows, or movies with sequels. I'll give her credit, though, between mentoring by other actors and sucking it up herself, she did produce a likeable character.

I loved this show. I even have an original costume from the episode "The New Habit". I knew about Sally hating to do it. She only did it because her step father scared her when he said "You may never work again" when she was offered the part. She said the flying harness she wore wasn't even made for her but for Mary Martin for Peter Pan so it didn't fit her very well and was uncomfortable. She still did an excellent job on a show that was beloved by so many.

Sally Fields is one of my favorite actors, and one of the things I enjoy about her work is how genuine she seems in every role. The Flying Nun is no exception, she is convincingly in character at all times, despite her misgivings about the character and the scripts. I'm sure the experience she gained from TFN served her well in subsequent roles😁

I remember as a kid watching this show and sure, looking back on it, it's certainly silly but it was still something that I clearly recall watching with my family, and it was my 7yo introduction to Sally Field. It's sad to know this was a difficult time in her life, but it's wonderful the way she came out of it and persevered to become the Oscar winning actress we know.

Yes, I used to watch the show when it was in syndication in the early 1970s. Personally I DID like it. Yes, I knew there was no such things as flying nuns, but I think what we reacted to was the sincerity. It had it's heart in the right place. The other surprise we got later in life was that Sally Field would go on to win TWO Best Actress Oscars. And she did in fact blossom to an even better actress - which is saying a lot, because for someone who hated her role, she never let it show in the final product. My memories are fond of it - but if I ever met her, I probably would not tell her that I watched it regularly.

I did watch the show as a kid. I know that Sally took edgier roles after Flying Nun, but Smokey and the Bandit was the hit that she desperately needed. Because of that role, she got bigger roles which led to her getting 2 Oscars. With that said, Robert Reed hated The Brady Bunch, even though he was a surrogate father to the kids, and out of his own pocket paid for him and the kids to go to Europe on the Ocean Liner Queen Elizabeth 2 (there is also a hilarious story about a "shipboard romance" for 2 of the kids, but that's another story.). Elizabeth Berkeley tried to break away from her role on kid's show "Saved By The Bell" by baring all in Showgirls, which backfired on her.

Hi Rick. I am not shocked at all by this because I’ve heard it all. As a young girl growing up in the 60’s, watching Gidget and the Flying Nun, I loved both shows. So did my friends. I have a vivid memory of playing outside one September as it was starting to get dark and my mom calling me in to watch the Premier episode of one of the seasons. It was the first time on our new color tv. I was so excited! Years later I heard Sally Field say very disparaging remarks about both shows and it got me really mad. I lost respect for her because these shows gave her her start. It really bothered me. Then years a later again, I heard her talking again about these shows and she had much kinder things to say. So I felt better about her. Those idyllic days of my youth are kept tightly in my heart. Life and tv especially were so much cleaner and brighter than what’s on today. I’ve recently started rewatching That Girl with Marlo Thomas and Ted Bessell. Another great clean show. Thanks for another great video Rick. This one really hit home for me. As I take each day at a time after losing my husband I enjoy watching all of these shows. ❤

I have never heard of this show, but it seems Sally didn’t appreciate her Sister act and thought it was utter nunsense! 😂 While this show with its very surreal premise, (a skinny nun whose hat gave her wings? Was she registered with the FAA?) I would consider it just Sally’s introduction, as to me, the one television role that she had that blew all minds, even today, was that of Sybil Dorset, a woman with Multiple Personalities disorder, in the aptly named made for tv movie “Sybil”. Definitely a must see! Regardless, your video today has me intrigued by this show, and I encourage you to cover it, for the curiosity alone. I don't know that I remember any specific storylines from the show now, but I do remember liking it. Kind of a silly premise I guess, but I was a kid so it was cool. Not sure how I would feel about it watching it as an adult now. But it'd probably still be better than some of the new stuff they are making these days.

If I remember correctly, she liked being Gidget. However, Screen Gems halted the series and because she was on contract by them, SF was obligated to do the Flying Nun. She stayed in contact with her co-stars through the years. Post Flying Nun, she tried to shed that image by doing the TV mini series Sybil which she won an Emmy. Then doing Smokey and the Bandit, but I think Norma Rae put her on the map Oscar-wise and a few years later Places In The Heart won her the second Oscar. She’s a great actress that had clunker movies and TV to perform in. I would to ask her how was it for her to act along side Daniel Day Lewis in Lincoln.

Hey Rick, this is a new twist on what I knew of her playing Sister Bertrille! A few years ago, I saw Sally Fields in an interview and she glossed over how much she hated the role but she did mention at lengths that the shooting of the series was very difficult for her since she suffered from vertigo. The producers knew it and they promised that all of her flying sequences would be done with special effects but, as you may have seen in some shows, she is actually hung by a wire at times and was, according to her, trying very hard not to yell her despair and her fright at being suspended in mid-air. I don't remember if she said there were safety nets underneath so my thought is that this negative feeling towards the series may come from a buildup of those emotions. As the old saying goes: Never meet your Heroes, you're sure to meet disappointment.

Rick, Is this your first time covering "The Flying Nun?" While I'm not a huge fan of the show, as a lifelong Catholic, it is indeed special to me. I remember watching reruns of the show back in the '70's. I had no idea that Sally Field had such disdain for the show, especially given that her performance as Sr. Bertrille came off so genuine and innocent. She really handled the part well. It would be really cool if she saw this video and provided some up-to-date comments about the show. Also, we GenX'ers will recognize Marge Redmond, who played Sr. Jacqueline, as Sarah Tucker from the 1970's Cool Whip Commercials. She just passed away a few years ago at the age of 95. Thanks for a good video, Rick. Be hopeful. Paul +

Survivors of luxury liner. Sally were part of a crew that are treasure hunters. Sally falls in love with the Captain of that one ship. Unfortunately, very bad guys are after something of the wreck too. Amazing movie. Kind of sad too. I think Sally played Aunt May in one of the Spiderman movies. She also played Abe Lincoln's wife also in Lincoln movie too. She can be funny and serious in acting. Good video. Thanks, Rick!

If it was on when I was in the living room I would watch it. I was mostly trying to figure out that head covering. I'd never seen anything like that on the nuns I was used to seeing. What was it made of? How did it stay on? Etc. Meanwhile, the characters were pleasant and the stories were harmless, mostly unmemorable. Sometimes repeating the formula as many sitcoms did back then. (Probably still do)

I watched this when I was a kid and enjoyed it as I always have anything that Sally Field was in. I have the highest regards for Sally Field as an actress. I don't have any idea what the real Sally Field is like but I am sure that she has always taken great pride in her work. I can see her point. Compared to many other things that she did, "The Flying Nun" is really kinda silly. No one can fly and the story lines were mostly simple with no great point to be made. But it was entertainment that let the audience forget about their troubles for a short time and she did get a paycheck out of it. I am a little surprised that she is not more grateful. Still love you, Sally!!!

OK my thought is before all these people are dead and since you have a very substantial recognized TV series on KZbin, maybe you should try doing interviews with some of these people and kick it up a notch we would all love it. I was in a scene with her although we never met.

I’ve known this about the show. She is a great actress and did a great job. It’s amazing that she hated it, but was able to pull it off. What you have to remember is that she was very young and resented having to dress like that at her age. I’ve always liked her, but it did bother me a lot. However there is so many phoney people in Hollywood that I shouldn’t be shocked. I loved the show and will get out of it what is presented and not think about the negative feelings of anyone who acted in it.

I don't remember specifics, but I seem to remember Sally Field always being a bit critical about what roles she would accept during her career as an actress.

Escapism for escapism's sake. That was the line up for ABC's Thursday night TV. Batman - F Troop - The Flying Nun - Bewitched - That Girl - Love On Rooftop. Sally, you paid your dues. Thank you.

SF had to work very hard to overcome the typcasting of Gidget and FN. Turns out she was/is a great talent.
