You aren’t going to believe this but I was searching for quite some time for a knot that would not come apart when I’m joining new yarn for my socks! I knit all of my hubby’s socks and occasionally when I join two different yarns they would come apart in the washing machine. Not anymore! Thanks so much for reminding me about this knot. I was raised in a fishing family and had completely forgotten about it. Blessings! Beverly

I was searching for a knot to add a mono leader to braid. I found several but the videos all demonstrated with heavy line. They were all very difficult when using light line. I came across the double uni which I used in fly fishing and tried that. Much easier to get a good knot and they pass through the eyelets smoothly. Tried it out on a new ultralight rig and it casts perfectly. I added a tiny drop of crazy glue to the knot per the recommendation in the video.

This is often used in the UK for attaching light braid (20-30lb) to a heavy braid leader (70lb+). It sounds weird, but a lot of anglers use it whilst beach fishing with 15ft through-action rods and it chucks the lead and bait out of sight. The anglers that use braid leaders use this knot to attach it to their mainline. Great video mate.
@Saltstrong6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Brodie!
@BigT736 жыл бұрын
@@Saltstrong What about using the bimini twist for a braid mainline to braid leader? Have you tried it yet it's much much stronger than this knot if using it for a leader knot and incredibly neat & tidy. I would highly recommend the bimini over this for leader knot although as you say this is a great knot for tying braid mainline together 👍
@BigT736 жыл бұрын
You need to be using a specific leader knot Brodie like the bimini twist or even the fg knot which works impeccably for braid to braid as well as braid to mono/flouro it's incredibly strong but if you are fishing hard ground us cod Anglers in the North east use a bimini twist as there's no chance of the knot failing the 200lbs braid will break before the knot does. The bimini is also silent when casting it doesn't clunk through the rings at all its very smooth indeed.

forgot to lick the line with your spit to lubricate it. 😅 Lol I dunno if it actually matters or not, but other videos I have seen of this and other knots they did that and said, tightening the knot without wetting it could, in theory, weaken the knot due to the friction heat generated by the tightening
@Saltstrong2 жыл бұрын
Here's a test I did on using saliva to tighten knots that revealed some surprising findings: www.saltstrong.com/articles/saliva-cinch-down-fishing-knot/

I have fabricated a test rig using a boat winch and a hydraulic dial gauge tensiometer. This gauge has an error of less that 1% at 50 lbs tension using a digital scientific test meter to calibrate. The rig is capable of testing lines between 10 and 200 lbs. The only joining method I have found, that equals or exceeds line strength, is a splice. I use a simple formula for minimum splice overlap which is line diameter in mm x 100. It would be interesting to test a range of knots but I think that has been done by others many, many times and posted on line. Everyone seems to have a favorite knot they swear is the best. The only proper way is laboratory testing using ISO materials strength test methods. My rig is pretty good and I may test a few knots if I'm inclined to set up the test rig again on my bench.

I like how you made the point of not to waste your line....makes total sense than wasting it...I caught a massive 8' black tipped shark with a 40lb braid and 50lb mono with that knot and surprising its sharp teeth didn't cut it...but I concur on the strength that knot has.
@Basket_Case_12 жыл бұрын
I actually have another great knot for that purpose. One that I have invented. It's really simple and easy, quicker than a double Uni knot, and has a smaller profile. It can also be used to tie braid to mono of course, but for that purpose the Alberto is superior. I would very much like to show it to you, and for you to teach it in your channel. It's really an original new concept in line to line knots!

I don't want to be critical--just helpful. This knot tested out at only around 55 percent of actual line strength. This won't matter for most fishermen who are targeting smaller fish, but the offshore and lands based shark anglers should use a pair of Bimini loops linked by a cats paw instead.

I use this to tie braid to braid on the spool. Any idea why this knot results in the braid bunching up into a ball/birds nest when casting?. I've followed the instructions several times and repeated the knot over and over. My knots are identical to those in the video. For some reason the knot catches on the line when casting and results in a mess.
@Saltstrong Жыл бұрын
You should use the arbor knot when connecting line on the spool to avoid this issue. Check this out: www.saltstrong.com/articles/arbor-knot/
@philippiansfourfour10813 жыл бұрын
I never use braid mainline only as backing and it does get rough spots on it during a long run from time to time. So this was also the best knot I could think of for tying braid to braid and it really does hold up well. Only difference is cover the knot with my thumb and index finger and trim the tag ends using a lighter to keep the ends of the braid from fraying. I use a modified Albright special for everything else, some call it an ‘Alberto’ knot

Would this be the go-to/preferred not for rejoining/reconnecting the same diameter braid (that might have been cut/broken off prior)? How does this compare to just doing a triple or quadruple surgeon's knot?
@Saltstrong6 жыл бұрын
Yes, this double uni knot is a great choice for connecting lines of both similar sizes and same sizes. For connecting the same line to itself, I prefer the double uni above the triple or quadruple surgeon's knot because it tested better in a majority of the different lines that I used above the surgeon... especially with braid.
