To be fair.. this was my first time playing anything in the vane and I was pretty overwhelmed by the character customization. Ended up choosing Karlarch for my first play through. Second time through on Tactician on my customized bard. (Admittedly even that was basically a choice of race and then randomize until she was cute.)

If you haven't played turn-based games before it might take a bit to get used to. It makes combat more of a puzzle, and things like turn order, a missed strike or a critical hit can be of vital importance for a battle. It is less about timing your attacks and more about finding the right tool, or combination of tools. On the plus side, because time is stopped you get access to a lot of options on how to solve the problem, espescially once you get a few levels under your belt. The basics of combat is from DnD, called the "action economy". Each round represents 6 seconds and every character can do an Action (green), a Bonus Action (orange) and Movement. Certain spells or abilities can change this, but those are the basics. I'd recommend looking around in the menu/character sheet and see what weapons and armor you and your companions can use. You can equip every weapon, but if you are not proficient with it you will loose out on the special attacks proficiency gives you. Likewise for armor, if a spellcaster is not proficient in the armor they are wearing, they cannot cast spells. Some spells require Concentration and if you cast another spell that requires Concentration it will overwrite the first one and the effect of the first spell will be lost. As a monk, your two most important stats are Dexterity and Wisdom. It helps you be quick and agile, and to focus your Ki. If you choose to wear no armor you will get a bonus to your armor class, a specialty of monks (and barbarians). When you choose your subclass at level 3 (and if you still want to go with throwing hands) I would recommend Way of the Open Palm. :) Also, DnD borrows a lot from pretty much all RL myths, and many modern stories, as well as mixing in some original stuff, so expect to see a lot of things you are familiar with or close to something you're familiar with. Hope you will enjoy Baldur's Gate 3. Both it and Spiderman 2 are great games. :)

So to give some context to the intro. The squid faced guys are called Mindflayers and they use those little eye tadpoles to reproduce. They squirm into someone's brain, then transform the victim into a Mindflayer over the course of a few days. The process is both painful and horrifying. The green squished-nose lady is a Githyanki, a species that has been enslaved by the Mindflayers for hundreds of years. The Githyanki eventually rose up against the Mindflayers. The Githyanki made a pact with the red dragons and now ride them. They travel across all the realms and planes (alternate dimensions) to exterminate all Mindflayers. That's why you saw them appear through a portal to attack the Mindflayer ship. The Mindflayer ship has the ability to jump to different realms and planes and jumped from the mortal material plane, to a frozen plane, and eventually ended up somewhere in the Nine Hells. The Gith (Githyanki) are not good guys. They're hateful, xenophobic, cruel, and malicious. They view other races as inferior, to be used and killed as they see fit. Shadowheart is justified in her racism against the Gith as, historically, they are vicious and cannot be trusted.
