Sam Cooke was a true soul genius. I'm 63 years old, and I fell in love with him ever since I was 10 years old. I will listen to Sam until the day I die. He was a revolutionary artist who taught others the right way to vocalize. Sam will never die, his spirit will live forever!

Listen to Little Wille John he was a vocal beast. Check out Suffering with the blues. Those riffs were flowing out in early R&B. But Sam was crazy good. I was reading a book about little Willie John and they use to meet in a empty church and singers would battle. The singers that were there are Legendary. People like Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, etc its crazy too think about.

Another fantastic review, thank you. Also, in case you are not aware of the man that introduced him, it's Steve Allen. He was great, a real genius. Please look him up if you don't know him.

Such a wonderfully intelligent, and at the same time wonderfully heartfelt reaction - Kudos! This may sound like I'm coming from out of left field, but his riffing sounds to me like a much smoother version of Louis Armstrong's riffing in his jazz singing.

@@luminiferous1960 Sam has stated that Louis Armstrong was one of his favorite singers. I know, it’s weird because Louis has such a rough, gravelly voice while Sam’s is so sweet and pure, but I think it was more about the approach to singing; playing with their voice like an instrument, always conveying the melody but freely improvising around it, to articulate the feeling of the song in that particular performance: capturing the moment and crystallizing it for the listener so that we can have a unique, personal experience of the music.

@@TheCapedWanderer Thanks for that information. I am glad to hear that Sam was a fan of Louis Armstrong's and acknowledged his influence. Louis influenced so many musicians, including both instrumentalists and singers, even if indirectly by influencing their predecessors. For example, Billie Holiday said that her influences were Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong, and her combination of blues and jazz from Bessie and Louis, but with a more urbane sophistication, created the initial blueprint for modern jazz, R&B, and pop singers. By the way, although Louis always had some grittiness in his voice, his voice was much less gravelly in his recordings from the 1920s and early 1930s, having a lighter tenor tone under the grittiness.
