A couple times a year my wife and I end up at a massive truck stop diner in Alberta Lea, Minnesota (we're hikers and there's a great state park nearby). It's always interesting to spend a few hours there sipping beers and listening to the old truck drivers talk about how the industry is being tanked by waves of drivers brought in from Russia and the Caribbean. The image most people have of truckers is outdated. In the old days, you could make a decent living driving a big rig - enough to support your family. I love hearing these old guys talk about the good old days but it's really fucking sad because it's clear the hardworking Americans are being pushed out of the industry to make way for cheap foreigners with work visas. The USA is well on its way to just being another third world shithole.

From what I heard from old truckers it was two things that killed the domestic trucking industry, deregulation in 70's and NAFTA in 90's. With NAFTA, goods could be shipped to ports in Mexico to avoid tariffs, taxes, and to avoid the union-controlled American ports. Then goods can just be trucked in by Mexican drivers. Come to think of it, I haven't seen an American truck driver in like 5-6 years. They're all Mexicans now.

The postindependence colonization you mention (military bases, drug trade, etc) of course followed suit, to this day. The (((powers that be))), whether in Paris, London, DC, Brussels (and at times Moscow and Beijing) have exported this debt slavery model elsewhere, whether Ibero America later in the 19th century, or Africa and Asia in the 20th century. Ironically, the much demonized Christian empires of before those times were actually relatively more benevolent and responsible for the locals.
