I love Destiny, and his perspective is usually spot on, but his takes on Bernie’s run for the nomination (around 24:00 and after) are very misguided. I agree that conspiracy talk is silly, and that at the end of the day Biden was just more popular, but Destiny tries excessively hard to make his point and it seems more like severe hyperbole rather than truth at times here. For example, Bernie definitely didn’t “fail miserably”. He was off to a very hot start, and I believe historically he was off to a better start than just about any candidate in primary race history. SC was very much a make or break state for Biden, because he was severely on the ropes. Its either ignorant or dishonest to argue that Bernie wasn’t doing exceptionally well pre-SC, which in election studies is considered to be the most crucial part of the race by far.

Feel like this is more a result of him being laughed at and called a moron for the entire primary cycle for thinking that Biden was the obvious frontrunner. So he’s taking a bit of a victory lap. When people talk about the favorability of Sanders they don't only use Democrats. When we're talking about these ratings it's entirely possible that someone who's conservative will end up paying attention to a left wing issue because it involves a figure they despise, like Pelosi. And there's independents as well. Regardless of ideology, an event like Pelosi being denied speakership will reach more people's ears when more people have an opinion about her in the first place. Now, what that attention is directed towards and used to advocate for is what you have to be careful about. That's the part where I understand the skepticism, but it could be done right. Also, lefties (or far lefties to be specific) hate Pelosi, so let's just say she brings a lot of people together.

M4A is not in any way “the most left leaning in the world”. We are not even talking about socialized medicine like the NHS or Scandinavia has, we are talking about single payer insurance with private healthcare providers. Canada, France etc have a M4A-like system. However, it would probably be the most *comprehensive* coverage in the world, covering think like dental and glasses. So it’s bold. I’d imagine that such provisions would be compromised away. The important thing is the key mechanism (single payer), the rest is just a starting point for any negotiation. As to the Public Option, no country in the history of the world has tried or implemented PO. In that sense it’s a radical idea because we have no idea if it would actually work and do anything at all to accomplish universal healthcare. It would be an extreme experiment with no evidence to substantiate its usefulness.

After the Chomsky Debate, Virgil publicly said several times that he unequivocally and definitively won the debate. That was an irreverent joke, as I understood it, sort of juxtaposed against the respectful academic background Chomsky is from where that would not be appropriate. Following this debate, Brie actually seems to think she mopped the fooor with Sam. She unironically clipped her long vaush style morally loaded diatribes and threw them all over Twitter today. Literally being the person her co host ironically pretended to be a couple months ago. Their responses to the Michael brooks question were a delicious little microcosm of this. Virgil states that it’s irresponsible and gross to speculate where MB would’ve stood on the debate, while Brie goes on to speculate that not only would Brooks have agreed with her, but that he would’ve been reluctant until she personally won him over. Genuinely pretty gross stuff with her, disagreements aside I lost a lot of respect for Brie during this debate just as a good faith operator.

47:30 This is also how we got universal health care in Canada and is actually how it works to this day. It was started in one province that elected a very progressive leader. It was so popular that other provinces created their own systems. Today each province still runs their health care program and the feds only really get involved to help with some funding and to assist in collaboration between provinces (e.g. setting up agreements to allow a health card in one province to be accepted in a hospital in another province if that person just moved or is a visitor). So this all-or-nothing approach for a U.S.-wide program has always confused me.
@avenuePad
@avenuePad 3 жыл бұрын
Who are you claiming has the "all or nothing" approach? There is a difference between building upon one province or state enacting universal healthcare and the removing of something like paygo. People don't have 15 or 20 years to wait. In Saskatchewan, healthcare happened within three years of Tommy Douglas's gov't. This was also a relatively new landscape in the 60's. The US has plenty of roadmaps to follow. This all or nothing accusation is disingenuous, especially coming from someone who is likely Canadian and has healthcare.

They were very busy tweeting big brain one liners at Boomers to actually show up. Yeah, I'm making a joke, but the sad reality is this is pretty close to being the truth of the matter. The Left talks a big game online and has a huge megaphone on various social medias but when it comes to crunch time the young adults don't (and didn't) even show up to vote. We (including Bernie) literally depended on them. We anticipated huge turn out, thanks in large part to the amount of money and social media attention that was pouring in from them. But they failed us, and the planet, and instead of accepting the reality and taking responsibility they instead listened to shows like Kyle Kulinski's and say "fuck it, it was rigged anyway, it's not my fault, must have been the centrists/rich/corporations/fill in the blank".
