I bought what has to be the cheapest V12 Ferrari in recent history and it came with a handful of different issues. Today we price everything out on the 612 Scaglietti and see how much it will cost to repair, and also change the 8 year old motor oil!

19:13 it is no, no. The canister type of filters have inside the bypass valve and if you do not know the right pressure, you are screwed. So actual physical size is not an issue, the bypass valve pressure is the problem. More info: Height [mm]: 75,5 Thread Size: M 20 X 1,5 Inner diameter 2 [mm]: 61 Filter type: Screw-on Filter Bypass Valve Opening Pressure [bar]: 1,6 Diameter [mm]: 76, 78 Outer diameter 2 [mm]: 71 The reference numbers: 141383 151323 206166 Look, the bypass valve is 1.6 bar, it is very unique. Typically it is 1.5, 1.0 etc. That original filter cost less than 20 euro each.

This, 100%. Making sure the bypass pressure is more important than anything else when it comes to oil filters. This is the reason I've stuck with Wix filters instead of cheap Frams, STP, auto parts store brand, etc.

Do not be over excited, that car need complete rebuilding. I am sure they did not drive 8 years without oil change, it just stay off the road long time. All that kind of cars need load of work. Replace all seals, timing belt, all fluid and who knows what else. To get it back good condition takes hundreds of hours labor and without DIY it goes very expensive. Red rev counter on the option list means the background of the tach face should be red, not black. I wonder if the one on this car was changed. My 612 options list says 'yellow rev counter' and the tach face is yellow in color. Black was the basic standard version. They all have red numbers above 7400 rpm. Good luck on the 612 build. I'm enjoying the story and the videos, as I did something similar a few years ago on a 612, although I lack the skills to do the work on it myself, and the talent to make it into an entertaining story.

Don't cheap out on the oil filters! There's more to a filter than the threads and size. The spring rate on the internal bypass valve is right on the OEM filter and may not be right on a parts store filter. Fram doesn't care that much. Should have sent that oil to Blackstone Labs to have tested! A TBN test would have told you if there was life left in the oil and tell you about suspended metals which can be used to track wear on certain internal parts.

@jamesg8246

@@teakangel3683 Nobody said it did. The function of the bypass valve is to allow oil to bypass the filter element when it becomes too loaded with debris. Breaks my heart to see fantastic cars like this, completely under driven. A 5.5 litre V12 masterpiece like the motor in that 612 would be good for hundreds of thousands of miles, with regular maintenance. This goes to show that a well engineered car, responds best when its used regularly. Thirty grand for a car like that is crazy! Get it fully checked out and fettled, by a non franchise Ferrari specialist, then drive the wheels off it for years to come. Its a classic shape, so will grow old gracefully. Used as a daily car, aside from fuel and insurance, he’ll probably need to throw 6-8 grand a year at it, to keep it in tyres and proper servicing? As long as you understand, and are comfortable with the cost of ownership on the way in, then a car like that will make every drive a special one. A truly great car, that brings you joy, is a great thing to have in your life.👍

Nah, I look up parts for commercial trucks and I will say, since Sam gave you the part number, throw it into Baldwin or Donaldson filter cross. They give attributes that you can open another tab and use filter attributes to search for a filter that size, gasket ID and OD, and micron rating. No need to pay for a original brand oil filter when aftermarket has so many options and better pricing. When you find your filter you like, throw that into your preferred filter brand cross for their number. And then you can get it locally through O’Rielly’s ( like this one because they show if they have in stock ), Western Auto, Napa, or Autozone.

The rev counter doesn't turn to red. The bulb behind is the same in all of them and it's just made with a red tinted plastic face. Awesome to charge $750! Don't put coolant in the thing you identify as a coolant reservoir, or you'll end up with another big bill. The picture of a steering wheel on the cap is a clue that that's where the power steering fluid goes. As you have all the books that go with the car all that sort of stuff is in them. The hand book also shows where all the drain plugs are and, if I can offer a tip, the filter wrench you're using works better if you hold it the other way round so it tightens onto the filter. The difference between a 612 and a Mercedes is obvious as soon as you start the engine. That V12 is one of the masterpieces of Italian music and you can never tire of it!

Keep in mind your calibrated closed clutch position (CCP) is based on a datum that is beyond the flywheel surface, so when you enter in your new closed clutch position (NCCP) you'll be entering in a value that is measured assuming the flywheel thickness is stock. So, when you set your PIS to 2.5, 3.5, whatever, the value will be off int he NCR because part of your thickness of the flywheel is shaved off. ONE mm makes all the difference in the world. So, if it drives, the unanticipated slip between gears will drive up your wear index from the 4,000 you're supposed to set it to, up to probably 10K and within 2,000 miles your clutch will be toast or your flywheel will be burned in. Trust me when I say the front engine Ferraris have no use for kevlar or aftermarket clutches. The older e-gear lambos are much more tolerant. I don't mean to be a pest, because I love your vids, but this is specifically why so many people hate F1s. If maintained properly, they are bulletproof but one shortcut will cause pain for every successive owner. I do however recommend a Hill Engineering release bearing. And again, don't throw in ATF, as suggested in your vid. Otherwise the car won't be worth it's weight in lead. As me how I know.

Need to be careful with oil filter selection, some of them need and are fitted with internal non-return valves and if the same-size replacement doesn't have one, you will find your engine running without oil pressure for several seconds on every start-up as it primes the filter - ouch !

Ditto!! Simply “matching” thread pitch and size is NOT the way to pick an oil filter…. Especially on a high dollar unit such as this. And get a stinking hoist already!!

It's my understanding not all engines require an anti oil drain valve filter.Depends on the clocking of the filter. On it's side or upside down the oil will drain back out.Engines that have filter mounted, filter threads mounted up. A drain valve is not needed.

yeah that's a major red flag. A buddy went 20,000 kms without an oil change in his 5.4L F150. I told him SELL IT SELL IT SELLLLLLLLLLLLIT I couldn't believe it was still running. Those things implode if you go 18 kms over 5000.

Hi, Sam! Congratulations for the nice and interesting video! I am Italian and like Ferraris. I just believe you have found a "great" used Ferrari. That said, this car is worth to be kept and cared of. As you said, you have just grabbed the deal; now, keep it and make it an even wonderful car! See you on your next video. Ciao! 😉👍

17:30 I think you need taller ramps. Why don’t you look into quick jacks? It won’t ruin your horse barn since it’s not a permanent install. It will give you more accessibility and ease of videoing when working on the cars. Plus their coming out with a new taller model.

Timing belts on one of these V12’s is NOT a “lock and swap”. If you want to make this car a “good example“ as you say you do, then you need to pull the valve covers, and dial in the cams after changing all the seals, tensioners, timing gear bearings, and making sure that the Gilmer gears have their fences welded.

Great video, I've been buying mostly muscle cars and Porsches for the past 20 years, but I'd like to get into Exotics. The only Ferarri I've had was a 355. Your information is very helpful, I just moved from Newport Beach, CA to Sarasota. I hope we can meet sometime at a car show or auction. Thanks for the tips!

Ferrari = cocktail chatter name dropping.. very expensive name dropping... just to give the competition an upper edge. When my Ferrari was at the mechanic. It goes to the mechanic so often just to generate that statement. Sam is not in that crowd because he wants to save money. The idea is shock value with the cost of repairs. Yup $13,000 for a clutch... jaw drop

Honestly, not a fan of the wheels. I have always thought that the BBS CH style wheels found on some 612s look fantastic. These just don't work for this car; such a classic design vehicle needs a more classic design wheel IMHO.
