Personally I think decisions like the original director and casting for stoic, shows it’s a passion project. I don’t care about the re-cast anymore than I cared about the Ariel recast. It’s an obvious quota that they won’t admit and it is what it is. At least it’s not the main character.I think the actress is very talented and personally believe httyd will easily be one of the best live action remakes, because aside from a few minor changes it will be faithfully adapted.

99% of remakes cannot answer the question "What was so wrong with the original that we had to remake it". John Carpenter's "The Thing" is the only justified remake I ever saw - because of technological limitations the original, "The Thing From Another World", couldn't feature the shape-shifting alien from the novella it was adapting.

Fellow Swede here. I've done tons of research on Vikings, there's historical evidence of one half-Mongol Icelandic Viking, but that's about it. Vikings are anti-DEI! Plus, they say they're making fantasy, not history... But Hiccup says in the intro of the movie that they're Vikings. Nothing about Viking says diverse, other than who they raided. They did not discriminate against their targeted victims.

And the reality of ancient viking history is that they're predominantly blondes and brunettes with white skin and blue eyes and are not racially diverse. If there were mixed races, that would be very minimal that it is rare to find one. Another example is like watching Sesame Street but they get a yellow puppet and say "Hey Elmo!". But wait. If they tell you "the original was a work of fiction", ask them why, then, they don't respect the integrity of the original work. I am pretty sure that the African setting was EXACTLY the reason behind the casting. They replaced a Hispanic actor for the hyena and white actors for the lead, the villain and the love interest, with black actors. What's wrong with creating a fantasy instead of a historical reality? Also, sometimes it DOES go the other direction. I have seen a movie and a TV show involving the main character being targeted for prosecution by the US Attorney for the Southern District of NY, and both were based on true stories. In both instances, the federal prosecutor was played by a white actor, while being based on the real-life cases prosecuted by Preet Bharara. Who, as you can guess, is definitely not white. When they made a TV movie about the real life assault on Marla Hanson, the lawyer for her attackers who tried to slut shame her was a black man in real life, but Stephen Toblowsky was cast in that role in the film. So it is perfectly okay to recast a real-life villain with a white actor.

Im pretty sure "white-washing" exists as a term for a reason and has existed as a trope in Hollywood before black washing became more rampant. Notable examples would be: -Johnny Depp playing a Native American Man (Lone Ranger) -Scarlet Johanson playing a Japanese character (Ghost in the Shell) -Most of the near all white cast playing Egyptian gods (Gods of Egypt) Not to mention the more egregious racial caricatures portrayed by white actors in the the 40s-60s

That would have implied redoing the entire HTTYD1, which is not simple. It'd cost as much as making a new movie from scratch. That movie was released almost 15 years ago, and the technology in animation and 3D has advanced so much that you can do prettier animations and scenes (visually speaking) on your home PC than what you see in HTTYD1.

The remake is done by Dean DeBlois from the original movies. In an interview, he states the decision to cast Nico Parker as Astrid is because she embodies the core character of Astrid. I am sure you can find it on KZbin.

Cultural Appropriation While these movies are fantasy and deal with non-historical themes and realities, it could be argued that these fantasies are being modelled on real-world culture. If that is a path on which the story treads, then it's fair to stay true to the culture these stories are borrowing from whether it is a fantasy or not.
