Come from a 323 area code. Who's this? Where do you come from? Also in the middle of work. But you know okay. Yeah, that's better. Thanks. Yeah no I've been listening for quite a while. I wanted to like perhaps everything I'm saying with that because you know a big part of my political education came from listening to Michael Brooks. And just the way he was able to talk about the stuff going on internationally and everything else was really something that I connected with. And the past in my opinion is the past year with what's going on in Ukraine and everything has been very disappointing just in the way that I've been hearing it talked about. And especially just from people like yourselves who I've come to understand that like your guys' job is much more in the political Realm and understanding what's going on politically. And in the realm of Politics as opposed to you know a more International lens. Which is what I know Michael Brooks was amazing at. You know and just from the aspect of NATO's involvement the recent leaks that have come out regarding you know the CIA had funded the Ukrainian Nazis the Azov Battalion it just felt like a lot of the discourse around it was from my view from a very racist lens. Because in my understanding of things had that same situation gone down and anywhere outside of Europe then it would have been the discourse of we've been down this road before. We know what it's like to have to sit there and fund small right-wing far right-wing sections of a government that seems small and then 20 years later we have a full-on God knows what. But that's what happens when you put billions and billions of dollars into the hands of Nazis. So wait a second so let me let me see if I understand the way you're characterizing what's going on in Ukraine. For you, the top line of the Ukrainian conflict is the U.S. starts funding a small band of Nazis in a country. Do you feel like you're missing a step or two with that timeline? What I'm getting at. No, you still don't know. you still don't know. Give me an example of when the United States funded a country's Army let's say when they were invaded by another country. Kuwait I don't know that we gave them funding. But we came in with the military. I mean I wouldn't be surprised if we gave them some money as well. I would imagine we also gave them money but we brought in troops. What I'm trying to get at is the discourse, see I'm not saying that Russia is right in its Invasion. I'm Anti-Imperialist and it's a war of sovereignty. But what I'm seeing is the discourse around it. I'm only criticizing the way that you presented the conflict. You led with I mean I want to say you led with the tail but not even. Was the president before he was not democratically elected and has it not been shown that that Revolution was highly funded by a CIA operation to overthrow that democratically elected president because he was a Russian Ally and was going to go against American hegemony. So I think without understanding that context the answer is I. I think that it's highly disputed that if you're saying that the but for in the Revolution was a function of U.S of U.S money. I think you're wrong. I don't think it was the sole reason but I think that U.S. hegemony has gotten very good at pushing things in its direction in the way it wants to go. Also in some ways too I mean also really bad. well I mean I would say that it's all bad when you're giving money.

The most telling part of this is when Sam is asking him a simple policy question and he can not untangle it from his personal experience. "I don't know any arms dealers". Like dude c'mon. Get serious. Humble yourself a little. This isn't about you. You are saying you don't like what the government did. Sam is asking you what the government should have done. And you don't have a good answer so you obscure the whole thing with hypothetical barriers. And instead of humbling yourself and seeing the flaw in your logic. You get defensive. It's a fundamental misunderstanding of how NATO works... NATO doesn't choose where it goes, countries apply to join. I'm Finnish, we had NO interest in joining NATO until the Russians invaded Ukraine. Now we're in NATO. NATO didn't get to come in here, WE applied to join. Using NATO expansion as a justification for Russian imperialism is just pathetic. Especially as said expansion was countries joining NATO specifically for protection from said Russian imperialism 🙄

That's not at all true. The USA tries to use NATO to influence Europe. Just like all government programs it looks for a reason to continue existing. NATO ran its course and should be abolished. Thats a common misconception. The NATO members decide if a country is allowed to join NATO or not. Non-aligned countries cannot simply decide to join and thats it. So it was and is a conscious decision of the NATO (or more specifically, of NATO members) to allow the expansion of NATO towards Russia. That's just a fact.
@pekka5393

@@stonythewoke9921 Yes, and as op said, countries APPLY to join, then it is up to the NATO members. So it starts with the country wanting to join. If a sovereign country wants to apply, it can do that, russia should not have any say in that.

Just a reminder, NATO expansion is countries applying for NATO, meeting a certain criteria, voting it through their parliament, and getting approval from all other members. The countries in Eastern europe were so desperate to get into NATO some of them like Poland literally started lobbying in US politics. So framing this like it’s done to us is crazy. Let me say I completely disagree with Sam on NATO enlargement. It is a force for good because it allows contries that would have been under the sword of Russia to develop without the fear of invasion, it comes with anti-corruption measures and investment plus expertise in that investment. I’m not gonna pretend America is perfect, it lags behind eastern europe in some perspectives, but it’s a whole lot better than any alternative, including our western european partners, that have proven disappointing many times in situations like this.

The vexxing thing about this is that the caller's entire position is simply "America bad" and he thinks realizing that was a political awakening. There's no actual policy behind it beyond "whatever America wouldn't want." That's why he got so angry during the conversation -- there's absolutely nothing behind his paper thin position, so all he could do is regurgitate the propaganda he was fed and get agitated at Sam challenging positions that are ENTIRELY based on emotion. It doesn't matter that Russian is acting as a violent imperial power in this, so long as America doesn't want them to. There is no point at which this ends -- Russia could march armies out to expand to USSR-era borders and beyond. Imperialism is ONLY bad when America does it, so any country that's an American adversary gets a pass. This is what shallow, zero-thought politics does to someone's brain.

@@ShaithMaster The Azov nazi thing is a really good example of propaganda and you can see it's effect in this conversation. Prop. isn't necessarily about creating a false reality but also to manipulate people's attention. In this example Russia is using propaganda to maintain the war discourse around UA and it's failings and not about RU. The caller is essentially mad that MR frames the conflict in a different way than the caller wants. As for why some lefties end up having similar positions is that RU propaganda plays on the lefts general dislike of the US to plant the seeds of bad ideas.

Countries always do what is in their perceived best interests. Looking back historically there are many instances where I think we took actions that were immoral. But the actions always benefited some U.S. interest. The last half of the Vietnam war was waged entirely to avoid the inevitable embarrassing to our leaders defeat. We invented banana republics. How many governments have we helped overthrow? But assuming the actions of this country are always wrong is just as shortsighted as assuming we are always right.

Nonsense. Russia's proven to the world they're a paper tiger that couldn't invade a Denny's. Finland joining NATO is simply a rebuke of Putin, they couldn't possibly be in less danger from that fail-country even if all of Russia got Thanos-snapped to oblivion.

What i think is crazy is to think these guys would be capable to take any criticism whatsoever. Sam has his ego, and the others imitate by default, sadly never adding anything non trivial to any discussion (be it youth per be it Sam preferring not to be upstaged and selecting colleagues accordingly... Whichever). They move the goalposts and try to make this poor guy defend international politics, while all he was calling in about was the coverage, the discussion of these matters, hardly to apply for the position of minister of defense. But it's an easy way to embarrass the caller, as nobody has an intelligent answer to any of this, so then they can continue to feel extremely superior to anyone daring to comment on their product. And this is still the least shit left outlet i know... Sad state of affairs.

I don't understand why it's not Ukraine's decision to join NATO. Ostensibly it's an organization to prevent the spread of war, especially between member nations. I don't understand why we should be in fear of Russia's opinion on that considering NATO was formed in opposition to the soviet union. Someone explain in terms other than "but he has nukes, me scared".

Russia doesn't believe in international law. Putin and many others in Russia's places of power believe that Russia is essentially an "organism" that should grow as it sees fit. Post WWII, when we decided [mostly] to observe and adhere to borders and new agreed upon laws of "don't invade for territory" etc... Putin has combined several fascistic Russian "thought leaders"' beliefs - from Ivan Ilyin saying that the leader of Russia is the only pure leader in the world and is the only one that is good and right in everything they do; to Gumilyov believing Russia was imbued with 1000yr power from space beams hitting the country (Sept 13th, 1380) as the nebulous "West"'s 1000yr energies were dying down; to Alexandr Dugin, who literally just took Nazi ideology 100% and applied it to Russian talking points and histories... Like... Dude... This moron on the call is worried about a small band of Nazis fighters in Ukraine while not knowing at all that Russia's ideology is fueled by a full-on Russian simp (Dugin) who has Putin's ear (while also constantly yelling Putin that Ilyin was a moron, so listen to him only!) [Ilyin died in the 50s in exile I believe...] Russia believes they're the only good and only truthful nation while actively using nothing but lies throughout their politics. They have three parties, but they're all run by far right buddies of Putin, to give the appearance of democracy, but it is controlled... Read into Russia's explanations of downing a former Ukrainian president's plane (killing everyone)... Also, Putin believes he is the reincarnation of the first Christian baptized Russian from around 1000AD... His goal has always been to bring Ukraine back into the fold no matter what. He thinks Kyiv is his personal mission.

NATO is not an organization to prevent the spread of war. It is a military alliance and its sole reason for being is to WAGE war. Secondarily it serves as a means of economic and political colonization of European member nations by the United States.

1. NATO rules say that no country can join if they're involved in an active conflict. Sure, rules can be changed, or overridden. 2. Are you seriously suggesting that the existing members of NATO should have no say over who can join it? So if Russia, China, or Iran announces that they are joining NATO, the current members just have to accept it?

@@roberttaylor5997 that is what I'm saying, I'm not saying NATO shouldn't choose member nations, I'm saying the opinions of non NATO nations on the matter should be irrelevant. Member nations can't go to war with each other, there should certainly be stipulations, but I'm all for avoiding wars. I'm going to say now that I do not support the war in Ukraine, what I mean by that is that Russia is the one waging this war, they need to leave. I don't it consider it an act of war to arm Ukraine in their defense, I don't think that being in favor of arming Ukraine during this and being opposed to war are contradicting beliefs. This is not two sides battling over territory, this is one side trying to steal territory from another, it's not against my pacifist beliefs to arm and even allow Ukraine into NATO.

lol, how "back" to Russia? the Ukrainian Soviet Republic massively contributed to every Soviet achievement, just like the Russian one; and the current Russian federation didn't exist during the USSR, just like the current Ukrainian state didn't either. so Ukraine was never "given nukes by Russia," it just earned/achieved them by virtue of its participation in the Soviet project. and giving them up, decisively as result of irresponsible US lib/idealist meddling foreign policy, invited the recent Russian invasions.
