So, his argument against the minimum wage is that 'below the poverty line' wages are a useful punishment for "poor choices"? Shitty attitude, dude.
@haverjr5 жыл бұрын
So let me understand this what is the ultimate libertarian punishment for bad economic choices? Lets say you did not hit any of those success markers and got married, had kids before 21, and did not graduate highschool. From their you rack up debt to feed and house yourself and your family to the point of needing bankruptcy protections. But in the libertarian perspective you should not be able to declare bankruptcy due to it being a government debt forgiveness program so what would you do with that person to "punish" them debtor's prison? Indentured servitude until debt paid off? Slavery for a set number of years? This is why we have economic laws and regulations outlining how much a minimum wage should be because humans deserve a set amount for their time while working for any company. We also have protections against being punished due to financial failings all of which stop the establishment of a even lower class below poverty level that would be considered a subservient/slave class as was the case in centuries past.

I graduated with my bachelor's in biochemistry, have no children, not married, and got my first career job with my degree in 2019 making 15$ an hour in the Chicagoland area . So without even getting into deeper, already your logic is flawed. It's about how much it costs to survive and how much your productivity is worth. Your work shouldn't make corporations billions of dollars while their workers are not being paid enough to survive.

its the exact opposite. if you don't have experience and/or a degree, companies won't think that you can generate enough value to sustain the minimum wage payments they provide you. let's say you can only make a company 4$ an hour, instead of them giving you a job, giving you experience and letting you start climbing the ladder, you get 0$. as an analogy, imagine you are stuck in a deep hole. minimum wage is like there being a ladder to climb out of the hole but the start of the ladder is 15ft above you. without minimum wage that ladder would have an addon to extend all the way to the bottom and everyone else would still be on the same step as they were before.

The reason the US even has a minimum wage is because if corporations could pay less, they would. This video is 3 years old, and because the of events during COVID, inflation in these last years due to corporate greed and hubris has year over year reported increasing profits even though the majority of the costs of production hasnt increased. Yet federal minimum wage is still $7.25/hr. A dozen eggs in some areas cost upwards of $7.99. That would mean even at $15/hr it would take one to work 30mins to afford that. The problem isnt that we have a minimum wage, its that the "law" doesnt keep concurrent with the proliferation/inflation that a capitalistic society endures. Capitalism is a snowballing effect. Its only going to get worse unless corporations are willing to pay a fair and profitable wage to the working class that coincides with so called inflation.

Fun fact, Sweden does not have a minimum wage. You heard that right, it doesn’t exist in Sweden. It’s not like the libertarians imagine though, it’s heavily regulated anyway. Wages are bound to collective labour agreements, which are negotiated by unions. The collective labour agreements are binding and have to be followed by every employer in the branch. So that effective minimum wage differs per sector, but it’s not federally fixed. This also only works because the unions have so much more power in Sweden than in the US.

Anyone that has ever moved in their life knows this and if you are only making $2-an-hour at your shitty burger flipping job in Malibu because we live in a libertarian utopia with no minimum wage, then you will literally be too poor to move to Texas or wherever in order to get this better paying job.
