@@danieliorga2000 4K is 100Mb/s, Netflix is not 100Mb/s as most internet in the USA is not that fast. It is probably around compressed 25-30Mb/s max, so 1/3 the bit rate of normal 4K. ( 4K can also be recorded in 200Mb/s but most Camera's are 100Mb/s )

mike k I also purchased a One S at launch and used it primarily as a 4K Blu-ray player, but ended up upgrading to a stand alone player with higher quality visuals and superior audio support. That being said I’m pretty sure that most consumer that purchase a One S/X did so to play games, and once cheaper 4K blu-Ray players hit the market it lost its appear as a cheap stand alone player option.

Don't think their heart was ever in making players to begin with. Even back in the DVD era other manufacturers were really pushing performance refinements and feature sets while Samsung just seemed to release ho-hum models as a formality. Nowadays with their Blu-ray players if I see one used at a thrift or second hand shop, even if it looks cared for, it's usually broken.

Samsung's blu ray players since late 2006 when the format launched have always been suspect and prone to break down; Their 4k player was a disaster and as you mentioned, it only sold initially because it was bundled with a 4k tv. Panasonic hands-down, has the best and always had the best. Having sold them at Tweeter and Magnolia, I can tell you Samsung's blu ray players were the most returned due to tech issues and breakdown. None of this surprises me. Great video!

Rich Morris I own the Samsung m8500. It does what it’s supposed to do but it’s a cheaply built machine. It’s flimsy and I never expected it to last when I bought it. Physical media isn’t dying, just Samsung’s shitty low quality players. Everyone else will pick up the slack (Panasonic and Sony still make VERY nice players as everyone knows)

Back in the day I had LD,DVD,etc too with pioneer components and cerwin vega speakers. I just like how much more convenient DD(aac and mp4) is and any quality difference is negligible to physical media when properly encoded. I'm so impressed with my portable jbl xtreme and charge 3 speakers as my home theater I don't feel the need for a home system anymore and I use them a lot at the skatepark. I do want a bit more volume for the skatepark and plan on getting the bigger jbl boombox but otherwise completely satisfied

It amazed me how people just stuck with MP3 when it is such poor compression and their have been far better formats for ages. All phones support AAC and Androids support Opus but Google and Amazon only sell MP3s. These days I only buy from musicians who sell on Bandcamp so that I can choose between Flac/Alac, AAC/OGG and Mp3.. I would love for them to support Opus but can deal with converting a Flac file.

I agree. If I want to watch some interesting documentary I will stream it because the sound isn't really that important mostly because it is someone narrating. If I want to enjoy a highly touted movie then I may stream it first to see if I like it, and if I do then I buy the disk because the sound dynamic(s) is/are so much better.

Samsung is in the top 5 when it comes to worldwide Blu-ray player manufacturers so this isn't simply a case of Samsung not doing well in the market. The physical media market itself has been on a steep decline for years now and with Oppo and Samsung calling it quits other Blu-ray player manufactures will undoubtedly follow suit. It wouldn't surprise me at all if LG (who sells less Blu-ray players than Samsung) calls it quits next.

Despite Netflix claims, I've seen home-made encodes from Bluray that vastly surpass their streams in quality despite being at very similar average bitrates. When you are having to encode at so many different settings like Netflix do, but content that comes and goes off the service all the time, its just not practical to take the same TLC in getting the encode right.

@@stevesavanna I use a software called dvdfab to rip them , then store them on a ten terabyte hard and play them through my oppo 203 the oppo has 2 3.0 USB hubs in the back , i use a a software inferview , to put the movie covers on my files create my own Netflix.

Unfortunately whilst we still have the vast majority of people buying DVD if they buy physical media at all, then it is clear that the market just isn’t there for 4K - especially if people who do care enough about it will not buy Samsung players anyway. I do like having physical but the pull of streaming is very strong. The quality is obviously not as good compared to disc but when you just want to check out a “blind buy” film, shelling out £15 (or £25 for 4K) is a bit risky - compared to £10 a month. If they reduced discs to £10 new for 4K then I could see people buying them again in big numbers

The new Pioneer players (LX500 & LX800) I see as the real successors to the OPPO players ... the have the same capabilities (SACD-, DVDA-support), they as well offer complete media information and they have an even better build quality than the UB9000 ... this machine weighs 10.3kg ... and furthermore they have a display being appropriate to be called "Display" ... which I personally expect, when spending more than 500€ for a player...

This is an excellent idea. Bring the quality difference into the light. However, I feel like the biggest difference to me is the audio, which is so badly compressed with a stream. 4K UHD Blu Ray discs have actually outsold expectations. Samsung players didn't seem to want to be a big player in 4K UHD with few model updates in the past couple of years. Sony, Panasonic and Pioneer are better options anyway. I probably won't miss Samsung's player but I do miss Oppo's.

It’s just too expensive. Here in EU new UltraHD Blu-ray films tend to cost 30€. With that money I can have a single 2 hour experience or 2 months of Netflix’s highest plan with lots of movies and TV series with 4K HDR capabilities.

This is what you think. I have a Sony X700 UHD BP and Amazon & Netflix. The difference is just too big for me between physical and streaming media. On the disc, the bandwidth hovering around 80mb while pikes peak 15-25mb. Not only the picture. The audio also gets a big hit. I am an avs guy so sorry streaming will not be the mainstream for the guys like me. Just watch Blade Runner 2049 and 2001: A Space Odyssey with DV from disc. I am pretty sure your jaw will drop off.

If there was a film I would have to watch again third time, I could just rent it on iTunes for a fraction of the price. Right now, 30€ it’s too much for what you get with a single disc.

Samsung 4k players sold badly because they had the world's worst remote, a noisy fan, poor build quality, poor support, and no Dolby Vision! They are blaming the media for their terrible products. Vinyl sales are doing pretty well these days.

I rely on and mostly use physical media. And will continue to do so. A non physical "digital" thing can never replace a real thing. As long as there is only CD'S, DVD'S, BLU-RAYS, to choose from those are the only alternatives.

Of course the media just loved reporting that Samsung were stopping manufacturing 4K players insinuating that the other big names were about to do the same thing. You've totally cleared up the confusion for me. You're right, nobody I know has a Samsung player, they're crap - we've all got Sony 800's - a really great machine in nearly every way.

That's a big reason I like buying Blu Rays. The best audio and visuals is great but the thing I love the most is watching the commentary from the director and sometimes cast. I like podcasts so thats just another form of it kind of. People talking about the movie they made and all that.

Yes, physical media is going away. Just like 8-track tapes, Cassettes and VHS tapes. The problem is that instead of paying $20 and getting to watch your movie or your children getting to watch your movie a hundred times a day, now you'll have to pay each and every time you want to watch your movie at anywhere from $3.99 to 6.99 a pop. Everything these days want "pay as you play" but at unreasonable prices. Technies have been able to create software to rip copy encoded protected video files so that people can make backups of their privately owned media. Some one needs to hack the streaming files so that you can purchase and then retain a copy for streaming media. It's only fair.

Big deal that Samsung is stopping making Blu-Ray Players. Means nothing for the format as a whole. If Sony stopped making Blu-Ray Players (or released a new PlayStation model without Blu-Ray playback) that would be a sign that Blu-Ray is dying.

Studios need to drop prices of 4K Blu-ray discs. $19.99 on release and $14.99 several months later. There are people willing to pay for quality but the current $25-30 are just too much. To be honest, people watch a movie maybe twice right after they buy it and maybe once per year after that if they love the movie or sometimes never if it was an impulse purchase. So amassing a big library of movies on any format is really a big waste of money. I only buy my favorite films and some major new releases but for some buying movies is an addiction. They just have to spend their money on something. It comes down to a lack of self control.

Umm, UHD's go on sale all the time...you can pick them up for $10, plus they come with a regular Blu-ray, plus a digital code. So I really don't see the value in streaming or digital services. People are just uninformed & lazy...

My problem with physical media, while yes you get better quality all around. Asking $29.99/$34.99/Even some $39.99 for some Steelbook new-release 4k media stuff is crazy. It's very hard to justify that expenditure when you have options like Hulu and Netflix around. Value and convenience will always dominate quality. Just a sad truth. If they could make new release movies $14.99 or at most $19.99 I'm sure you would start to see a swing back in favor of the medium.

I'll keep buying discs for at least another decade or two, if I'm still alive by then. Because it's a fact right now you simply cannot trust streaming services will keep showing the content you like (the recent Simpsons censorship is a good example of this) nor can you guarantee the infrastructure will function where you live. Just take a look at the third world level of internet we have in a good portion of America and tell me you want to rely on them if you want to watch a series or movie again. So it's going to take time to see how things are going to evolve. After that archiving from the disc uncompressed and downloading files (again uncompressed) will probably be the way to go just the same way we now use high bitrate FLAC and other loseless formats for music. This thanks to much bigger and cheaper local storage and higher transfer speeds, once the infrastructure can actually handle that kind of traffic that is. Just imagine having a Petabyte collection of uncompressed movies in your PC just the same way you can have a few terabytes of uncompressed music right now.

I doubt blu-rays will be around in the next ten years. Maybe 4k blu-ray. They are already reducing down shelf space for them in shops. Eventually all the manufacturers will stop supporting the format like they did betamax and vhs, and then DVD, its just inevitable. Our famous big music and DVD/blu-ray retailer almost closed down because everyone is going online and streaming everything instead, which is crap in my opinion. I love collecting old technology, and you are right it will just be for collectors and just a niche market eventually. There's nothing better than owning and playing a DVD/blu-ray whenever you like without having to rely on the internet or a streaming service. People who enjoy that are just lazy and don't care whether physical media is dying out or how, they just want to be given whatever is made available to them, and so the problem arises because no one looks at how that is creating a problem because its wiping out choice and closing down retailers. But they don't care. :-/

Especially since ‘wireless’ is so popular, despite being horribly inconsistent compared to hardwire. It’s frustrating as hell for someone like me who prefers quality over convenience, to live with people who ‘hate wires’ and would rather have subpar internet performance while still paying full price for it, just because of aesthetic blah blah blah. Maybe not yet, but it's only a matter of time until Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, etc... increase the bandwidth of their streaming services to the point where most people can't really see any difference between on-demand video and a physical disc. We're clearly at a point of vastly diminishing returns now, where any new features (HDR, 8k, etc..) are nowhere near as compelling as the initial jump in quality from DVD to Bluray, and at the same time new codecs will keep reducing the bandwith requirements while internet bandwith will keep steadily increasing, so there's no reason for streaming video to catch up with physical disks in terms of 'good-enough' quality relatively soon.

You guys are getting worried for nothing. My Walmart still has more regular DVDs then blu rays. It’s like DvD (90%) tons of shelves. Blu Ray (30%) and 4K only has 1 tiny little shelf with 4 movies on it. So Regular DVDs are the most popular here in NC. Every new release the DVD versions are the only ones bought here. It’s cheaper to buy physical media online. Bestbuy ditched most their movies yes but their site has new releases every week on their site for pre order. They just switched to all online orders just like most clothing stores. Hahaha they never have my size cuz it’s not bought enough so I gotta order online 😂😂😂

Vincent makes a lot of good points, but I don't agree with his comment on digital movies being cheaper. 4K blu's go on sale all the time for as low as $10! But to give you a random example, Sicario: Day of the Soldado right now costs $19.99 to "buy UHD" in Amazon Prime Video digital only, but you can buy the 4K Ultra HD Blu for $21.58. So for an extra $1.59, you get a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, HD Blu-ray & Digital HD code. When you look at the the superior physical product, plus a digital anyways p, plus all the extras, is it really cheaper??? I don't see the value in "buying digital" at all...it should really be called "virtual" copy if you're really gonna be truthful about what you're buying...

Personally I will go for 4k UHD discs and regular Blu-ray as long as they keep making them. 90% of my collection is not available for streaming. I'm mostly into classics, cult films and films from around the world. Streaming is mostly just modern Hollywood films and I'm not really into the constant remakes and rehashes they do. The huge CGI driven movies based on comics, games, old series and such don't interest me much either. Besides that I just love having a physical library of films and series next to my physical library of books.

My take is that is more just an indicator of end for the dedicated video players - not the medium. Now I'm personally fine with streams - but fully accept physical currently gives you a better picture. To get that picture though, you need a drive that can read the disc, some hardware to process that stream - and somebody willing to keep on updating firmware to enable the latest features... and once game consoles do this, how can anybody really compete? (yes, I'm sure they can - but the area for competition gets more and more niche).

I just started buying physical media, but I'm much more likely to buy it if it has a digital copy too; or vice versa (I'm quite a bit less likely to buy it if it doesn't). My reason for doing so is because services have started to fragment kind of obnoxiously, as every publisher wants to have their own streaming services. This is mostly pertaining to anime. On that subject, some anime is actually improved in it's blu ray form as well, versus it's original aired/streamed version.

There is something to be said for watching a movie, enjoying it, and subsequently purchasing the disk. I only do so however if it's something special, as 4K disks in the UK cost between £20 & £25 for new releases. Not all movies are available on Netflix and I do like to have the physical media if it is a film I really like. I would agree with your comments regarding 3d disks. I own a number of them, but when I had to purchase a new TV in late 2018, I was disappointed to discover that I could not find one that would show 3d images. I settled for an OLED TV which I do like, but I miss the opportunity to watch films in 3d, although I note they are still selling 3d versions of certain films. I think this will eventually stop as people replace their TV's for newer models over the next few years and the number of people able to watch 3d movies is reduced to a minimum.

One of the biggest red flags to me was when Redbox(no pun intended) started declining massively. I used to see people use them all the time and now I nearly never see anyone using them. They do have a limited 4K rollout to some cities.

Interesting point re Force Awakens on a Samsung player.. However this isn't and wasn't a 4K movie..? All I'll say re the Samsung 9500 is that it produces stunning images (on my set up), through an NU8000 TV. Plus it's one of the few players with dual HDMI outputs meaning I can directly port it both the TV and an av receiver for optimum quality. Porting via an av receiver just doesn't provide the same image quality as direct porting. And if I'm getting a deal as well as all of this..? Can't grumble..

Apart from the limitations of streaming mentioned in the vid, we’re not all lucky enough to have high speed fibre broadband all the way to our front doors, not by a long chalk so that’s something to think about. Also if Hollywood ever decide to start filming at a decent frame rate then download will struggle further. I do think the medium will have to change from disc at some point once the files get too large, perhaps some sort of solid state storage but I sincerely hope Blu-ray is here to stay for a while yet 🙂

I bought a Samsung 4K player for full retail, upgraded to oppo 203 (sold), upgraded to Sony 1000es, bought a oppo 203 again, modified multiple things but really used it for vertical stretch and now replaced that with a Lumagen 4446 for my parasound lens setup , and kept my Sony 1000es as it looks sharper....

I am a massive movie fan but haven't used physical media for years and years opting for on-demand services like Netflix instead. I can see a difference in quality for 4K versus 1080p but currently its not sufficient enough to warrant the extra bandwidth or hardware cost to me, id imagine most people feel a similar same way. I also dont want my house full of Bluray boxes. However with gaming i am pro physical media for resale, install, collector reasons and do not do digital downloads.

I bought the last of the high end Samsung 4K HDR 3-D TV's in 2015, my JS-8500 series which still performs & looks superb, a shame they stopped supporting the 3-D Blu-rays which I have most of in my collection. As a huge physical media collector with over 5000 films I'm naturally concerned about the movie Blu-ray future.
