I lived in Nikko for 2 amazing years and to say I'll never forget it is an understatement. I actually worked at the only elementary and middle school up on the mountain. Yumoto Onsen is actually owned by parents of a student I taught. Autumn/Fall is definitely the time to go visit Nikko. Summer is too hot and humid, Spring brings out all the allergies, and Winter is only for those who want to visit it specifically in Winter. There are actually a few more waterfalls around Lake Chuzenji that are breathtaking in their own right but without a car, it's tough to see. The steak restaurant right next to the yuba restaurant has the most delicious steak you'll ever eat; expensive though. The 15-minute walk from Shinkyo Bridge back down to the train station is littered with cafes/restaurants/shops that each deserve its own video.

Thanks for sharing all of that information Daniel! Would just love to visit in the spring/fall next time. The heat really zapped our energy at times.

Some say summer is the best time to visit nikko because it is less crowded(compared to autumn) and it's much cooler due to the increased elevations...I've heard stories about how going up the slopes in the buses can take as long as 2 hours due to the heavy traffic. I visited nikko during the winter and although it was peaceful and quiet, many places such as the boat rides were closed.

Leopold Wow. I have have never visited Japan and most probably can never afford to. I only know Japan for the legendary Yamaha and what I read about the last century history and the discipline and cleanliness. But this is really unbelievable! Wow!

Leopold I didn't know. I just read about it. I realize now that there are so many other countries killing whales too. I am from India Sir and we are guilty for killing the environment too. It's all just really sad.

I think the typical image of Japan is of the big modern cities. Our one regret from our long trip is that we didn't spend more time in the countryside.

I am grateful to this wonderful blog as a Japanese. Nikko is a tourist destination where you can easily go from Tokyo in about two hours. Hakone is also famous, but personally Nikko is the best place to enjoy the nature and hot springs of the mountains. I enjoy climbing as a hobby, but I also recommend it as a place to enjoy full-scale climbing and camping.
