San Diego Jam Knot - Improvements for Braided Line

This video will show you how to tie the strongest version of the San Diego Jam knot when using braided line. Although the standard version is good, a couple easy improvements will make it even stronger.

I don't know if you left it out just in the video, but you should tighten the tag end a lot more than you did. It's what keeps the knot from slipping the most. This is the only knot I use to connect to swivels/hooks etc. I've never had it slip on braid, mono, or fluoro. Basic rule of thumb with the knot, thinner line, more wraps, and about 50% more than that with braid.

whats funny is that i tied this knot by accident, thinking i was tying a uni knot, but this knot is strong and you can pack more wraps on it and cinch it down easier than normal clinch knot

Nice, slow, zoomed in video - Thank you! Is this extra loop and wrapped 10x instead of 7x just cause of the braid for slippage etc? If im using a mono or flouro line to the lure i can still tie it my regular way of one loop around lure eyelet and wrap 7x ?

I use it all the time, with 20 lb fluoro I usually only give it 5 loops around, 7 on anything lighter than that. Yes, you wrap more than that with braid, because it's slippery, and it also doesn't deform and hold a shape at all like mono or fluoro does. I can't remember having any hook or lure pull out at the hook with any type of line with this knot. something else breaks first.

@@Saltstrong Im sorry, i probably wasn't clear. Im going to use the san diego knot to tie flouro leader to a lure or a mono leader to a lure. Im not going to use the san diego jam to tie line connectuons as braid to flourocarbon. I think i wasnt clear since u sent me your fg knot video which i have seen already, but thank you anyways.

@@masfishing1 Ahh...my mistake. I had multiple people in a row asking about line to line knots, so that we in my head when I read your post. Yes, the san diego jam knot can be used to connect a lure to mono or fluoro. It's a good knot, but others like the uni and palomar are stronger and just as easy to tie. But if you're tying to a lure that needs side to side (or up and down) movement, then I recommend using a loop knot. Here's my favorite one: www.saltstrong.com/articles/non-slip-loop-knot/

@@Saltstrong im tying on a 6" swim bait , S Waver 168, to my mono leader. I know the palomar but it takes up alot of line and then its hard to pass some bigger lures through the loop. So i was advised the san diego jam knot. I wrapped it 7 times on my 20# mono leader. It was fast and easy. Seems like its pretty strong knot. Do u think 7 wraps is good enough on that 20# mono, or should i have tried more wraps?

@@masfishing1 7 wraps is good enough... especially if you're using a lighter line as your mainline to maximize your casting performance. If that's the case, the weakest point that you'll want to maximize is your line to line connection.

I just run the line threw the eye and then to start it .Does doubling the eye with the line really make it stronger??? You can double the hook eye with a Pintzen knot .

Knots with a doubled line through the eye of the hook get closer to 100% strength like the palomar knot.

I've seen it done by doubling the line and going through only the upper loop. You'll have three tag ends to cut

+Scott P. The added wraps helps spread the load across a broader area, which allows it to have a higher breaking strength compared to the original method when using braid. But even with these added wraps, the load doesn't get spread as well as the FG knot does, so I highly recommend the FG over any other knot for braid to leader connections: www.saltstrong.com/articles/fg-knot/

That seems to be up for debate... some say that adding saliva before cinching the knot down helps because it helps ensure that the friction between the line doesn't cause damage. But others say that the high quality lines made today are slick enough to not need saliva.

8/30/2023, I watched the video and the 2 boys were wrong and disrespected the older fisherman. I would’ve put my gear in my car and go back and watch them stupid kids. If anyone catches a fish, I would run down and tell them “let me help you” and cut their line. And if they decide to fight, I would kick both their butts. LOL😮😊😂
