Man I miss that old United battleship livery. It's one of those liveries where it could be flying at 36,000 ft, and you were on the ground and could tell that it's a United, it's like the Southwest livery now. I love iconic liveries like that.

Wow, and not a damned A320 among ‘em! I loved this era of jetliners and especially miss the tri-stars. L-1011 never grabbed market share but had such elegance about it on takeoff. DC-10s were ballsy, powerful monsters and so comfortable to ride. Also, fun to consider the vantage points for shooting that will likely never be available to the public again. Thanks for posting this.

Just a few years before this was filmed, I lived in SF and watched planes take off and land on my days off from a nice viewing area next to a main runway. 747's were very common due to the volume of international flights into SFO. The best day ever was on a strong crosswind day, when planes had to land into an east wind across the mountains. Only about half would make it to the ground on the first attempt. I miss those days!

Funny. Just before I clicked this, I saw 2 UA 788's (one going to DEN and the other going to SFO) and a UA 772 going to NRT. Still waiting on the daily KE and UA 772's (KE to ICN and another UA to NRT). As of now, just a bunch of 738's and 739's!

I guess so, I feel kind of sad that I never got to ride on a DC-10 or an L-1011 in the glory days. The scary thing is that even the 757 is being phased out more as the years go by. I'm starting to feel a little old now that half of the airlines I flew on as a kid are either gone or merged, with their older aircraft on the way to being scrapped if they haven't been already.
@Sherpaful
@Sherpaful 8 жыл бұрын
Rea1mHD I know how you feel. For me the glory days of flying were from the early eighties to the mid-nineties. There were so many more major airlines back then and very rarely did they put you on a regional jet. Short hops were usually a 727 or DC-9. I flew L-1011's several times and greatly miss them. Plus, the whole experience became worse after 9/11 and with the advent of "peanuts fares". Airlines didnt treat you like cattle either. It's sad to say I don;t really enjoy flying anymore :(
@Rea1mHD
@Rea1mHD 8 жыл бұрын
I agree. The closest that I can relate is back in the early 2000s, when American used to send 767s on domestic routes to and from O'hare. Those felt like flying palaces compared to the 737-800s that they use today. The newer 737s have less leg room to accommodate the electrical screens behind each seat that don't work half of the time. Pre-UniCon merger, I still loved flying to O'hare to see the beautiful line of United tulip tails extending down the terminal in contrast with the dark storm clouds that would sometimes gather on the hot summer afternoons when we flew there. I guess the glory days of flying are relative, but I agree that flying just isn't as exciting any more. It's a little unsettling to think that my future kids might never see a 757 in action unless it's a package freighter.

Worked at SFO for UAL maintenance logistics from 98-01. SFO till this day has many different companies coming. God forbid the weather go bad or foggy and we were down to one runway operations. Those side by side landings on 28L and 28R are eliminated during fog or bad weather. Fortunately with newer technology that will soon change and delays should get way better.

For example, a Boeing 727 with composite body, glass cockpit (without engineer panel) and fuel efficient PW JT8D's? That's what I'm gonna do if the Boeing 777 replaces every airliner there is (When i have my own aircraft company)

The 727 was designed as a trijet because you couldn't get enough thrust out of the engines of the time to make it a twinjet. Now, we have engines that more than capable of powering airliners of that size as a twin-jet. While the clean-wing design with rear-mounted engines has its merits, it's harder to mount today's fuel-efficient ultra-high-bypass turbofans on the rear, hence you see jets like the A220 mounting them under wing. So, no, the 727 design will not come back.

Great video!! What happened to America West Airlines? Did USAIRWAYS buy them? I can’t remember. I know USAIRWAYS did buy a lot of smaller airlines Before American bought THEM up or merged with them.

Looking it up it was a reverse merger, with legacy US Airways operations taken over by those of America West. They kept the US Airways name and kept the Cactus call sign and ICAO code "AWE" of America West.
