It being a strong but simple competitor doesn't mean it's gimmicky, it means it's solid. Simple sandwiches almost can't be gimmicky, it's just that people think they're "above" such things and are looking to see the truly gimmicky sandwiches get ranked higher.

Also, don't be afraid to mix it up a bit. For example, clubs are pretty good, but I found that if you add onions and honey mustard, it really helps make the sandwich more enjoyable for me. So this is a message for all you aspiring sandwich players: be creative, and don't be afraid to try your own ideas on what a viable sandwich can be!

@@genzo454 working at burger king has taught me to be creative with my foods (i know that doesn't make sense at first) like just the other day I had a whopper jr. but then I saw the spicy sauce for chicken jr. and I was like damn I love spicy food so I replaced my ketchup with some of that shit and omg that was delicious and I've found a lot more creativity in my sandwich making (although some people are the opposite like who actually goes to burger king and gets a plain whopper like it's not good bro you need everything else to hide that fact from your tastebuds)

Nah a shoto needs to be standard and well-rounded with a toolbox kit of diverse but simple options. A grilled cheese is the epitome of a specialist that does exactly one thing, but does it well. Like a rushdown. I think like a club sandwich is the shoto of sandwiches. Got the meat, veggies, maybe some kind of sauce, and probably simple bread like white bread. Nothing fancy, but its got all the important things.

The issue of tomato making the sandwich soggy is a solved problem. Its all in how you build the sandwich. If the tomato is, at any point, actually touching the bread, the person that made it verifiably doesn't know how to make sandwiches. Hell, its almost the entire reason why people put lettuce on sandwiches in the first place, the shield the bun from the tomato. Other things that work in shielding the bun from the tomato include a cheese slice, meat if the sandwich has more than one type, like turkey and ham, etc. In a pinch, even pickles will do the job.

My tier list of these sandwiches: S-Tier: Pulled Pork, Banh Mi, Cheesesteak, Cubano, Reuben, Gyro, Tonkatsu, Monte Cristo, Bagel with Lox. These are sandwiches that are perfect versions of themselves, there's nothing you could add or change to make them better. A-Tier: Bacon Egg and Cheese, Grilled Cheese, Fried Chicken, Meatball Sub, Po'Boy, PB&J, Torta, Falafel Pita, Chicken salad, Italian beef. These are sandwiches that are tried-and-true staples, or that are similar to but overshadowed by something similar in S-tier, like how an Italian Beef is just an cheeseless cheesesteak. B-Tier: BLT, Thanksgiving, Lobster roll, Tuna melt, Croque Monseiur/Madame, Egg salad, French Dip, Kentucky Hot Brown, Cucumber tea. These are sandwiches with a specific niche where they excel, but don't have the broad appeal or staying power of S- or A-tier. C-Tier: Italian sub, Turkey club, Caprese, Patty melt, Torta, Roast beef. These are boring sandwiches, but they are defined loosely enough that you could maybe do something creative with them. D-Tier: Jambon Beurre, Ham&Cheese, Veggie&Hummus, Bologna, Bocadillo, Liverwurst. These are either just lazy excuses for a sandwich, or use ingredients that are actively disgusting. There's never a good reason to eat any of these sandwiches.

It's an unpopular opinion, but I believe that cheese belongs as a supplementary flavor. Any time it takes over the dish, something has gone terribly wrong. When I eat a grilled cheese, I have to toss some Tabasco or Tapatillo on there just to add some kind of balance to the flavors.

Honestly agree. Cheese is a good, maybe even the best, support. As a carry, though, I find it to not be very good, much prefer for either a meat to be a carry, or maybe a co-op carry by duo or trio of veggies instead, just not cheese, *especially* not solo. Cheese is a good co-op carry with onions and green peppers tho.

Sandwiches are balanced because they follow a pretty well-established formula: base (bread), support(side ingredients), and carry(main ingredient). Some sandwiches sort of deviate from this a bit, like having lots of supports and no carry, but for the most part, there is just a solid formula behind them.
