Omg the thing about the mirrors @1:15:50 really made my day🤣 The thing Sandy mentioned about selling just the "skate board" is like how they did it back in the early 20th century when carmakers would sell just the power train and chassis, then the customer would go to a coach builder for the body. Some people would even have a "summer body" and a "winter body". But regardless, there's already a ton of after market stuff for Teslas from wheels to coilovers, air suspension, body kits, auxilliary lighting, ambient lighting, additional cameras, HUDs, driver displays, storage organizers, steering wheels, throttle controllers, data loggers, power frunks, self presenting door handles (for 3 and Y), power lift gate foot sensors, high performance brakes, lift kits, light weight replacement parts, even replica "exhaust systems" generate engine sounds based on speed and pedal position. That's just the stuff that is available now. Once someone hacks into the power electronics, inverters and various other control units (and somebody will), that's when we'll start to see power mods, motor upgrades, custom gearing and aftermarket vehicle control apps.

www.fleetcarma.com/cold-weather-fuel-efficiency/ Ice vehicles generally lose about 19 percent range. EVs generally lose around 29 percent, so it's certainly an important consideration, but nothing close to Mr McElroy's wild claims. And this is before considering modern EV heatpumps - like Tesla's recent "Octavalve" design that Munro loves - which are much more efficient in cold weather, but that link's still a good rule of thumb.

It definitely depends on multiple factors. I live in Michigan so often below freezing and sometimes below 0. I’d say the range is generally cut around 1/3 and at worse 1/2. Assuming 1/2 range you’ll be safe for sure. If you have the vehicle charged right before you leave it heats the battery so you get back most of the range loss back. Also worth noting that highway travel is less efficient so range loss would be less if you travel in the city/ at low speeds

No, it was the Model S. The Roadster was cool to, but that was just a very expensive toy. The Model S was a practical car for a more reasonable price. And in performance it kicked the ass of supercars. For the P85D the benchmark was Elon's McLaren F1. Thinking about it a bit more, the Roadster already should have been a wake-up call for the industry. It proved that it's possible to build a sexy, fast and long range EV. It was small and very expensive, but the first telegram wasn't too practical either. What do you need to make a Tesla? Batteries and electronics mostly. Both are getting better and cheaper very fast, so anyone who paid attention should have figured out where this is going. Or we can go even further back in time, to the EV1. It had barely enough range for city driving, around 55 miles. But then I learned that it uses lead-acid batteries. That was when I knew the age of the EV has begun. Because Li-ion batteries have four times higher energy density, which would give you 220 miles and that's an entirely different conversation from there. Then the only limiting factor is price, but that's only a matter of time. I wasn't alone, many people did the same math and came to the same conclusion. One of them was this guy named Elon Musk, you might have heard about him.

Roadster was not the first time a company took an already-built gasoline car (Lotus) and converted to an EV. Not impressive. The Tesla-designed Model S was the impressive part.

Early Refrigerators The first known artificial form of refrigeration was demonstrated by William Cullen at the University of Glasgow in 1748. Sandy drops a BIG SURPRISE at 1:09:32
@RonnieLeeDuck3 жыл бұрын
I like listening to Sandy, but his criticism of Ford and GM gets old and annoying. Those companies are way better run post financial crises then they ever were when Munro worked with them. They will be fine. They have more than capable engineers. They are positioning themselves well for an EV future. I see EVs going mainstream in time. But Sandy is naive in believing the infrastructure is going to be built by the late 2020s to support predominantly EVs in the U.S. EVs are going to be adopted gradually. GM and Ford are playing it smart by getting into the game but targeting mid decade for when they will start to really ramp up EV production.
@rogerstarkey53903 жыл бұрын
Re "infrastructure" You're not paying attention. Re "gradual ramp up by GM/ Ford, etc" Do you realise how many vehicles Tesla will be making in 2025?
@RonnieLeeDuck3 жыл бұрын
@@rogerstarkey5390 Let's just say the pace of building out an infrastructure to support an all EV world has drastically to step up the pace from where its at now if they want to achieve it by 2030., . If you are interested check out this discussion between Matt Farah of the Smoking Tire podcast and Chris Harris. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3mbqXimhaZ4eKc The first part of the video is a lengthy discussion of Tesla and EVs in general. Farah attests to building a car storage garage and wanting to put in more EV charges but the city of LA wouldn't let him. And that is LA, the epicenter of the EV boom. I live in Portland Oregon. 4 story condos and apartment building are going up all over the place with parking garages underneath. None of them are putting in EV chargers. If you own a home where you can recharge then you are fine. I'm sure a quality network of chargers across the country will happen in the next 4 years to comfortably travel cross country. But that is as far as goes by mid decade. Again, at least at the pace it is going. As far as how many cars Tesla will sell in 2025. I'm sure it will be something between more than they sell now and less than anything that remotely justifies their share price.
@gnoxycat3 жыл бұрын
They could have been where Tesla is. They could be the highest value car company in the world. But because they are "playing it smart", they are not. Invest in them both. Do you really think they are going to be better off in 2030?
@usa-ev3 жыл бұрын
Sandy said annual auto sales would be over 50% EVs by then, which is way different than the U.S. being predominantly EV by then. Even if EV sales were 100% it would still take a decade to turn the fleet predominantly electric. We'll easily meet the infrastructure challenges in Sandy's time frame.

The important thing is that they do do do. And the things they do that are not so brilliant, are only temporary problems. To Tesla engineers, problems are merely opportunities for further brilliant innovations.

This was just great, so excited for this transformation that's just in its infancy. Majority of the world's population haven't even heard of Tesla, and even Elon Musk. They've never test driven a new car, let alone an electric one. I've made enough in Tesla to buy 2 of them and it may seem like a bubble, but then I think - when Robotaxis come along why would I spend even $25k on an electric car if it costs me less than a dollar for one to drive me around and I can sleep or work during the time
@usa-ev3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Yet another hard thing for people to wrap their head's around. They spent a lot of time on 3 wheelers here. I think those are a dead end because most people will pay the 25c upgrade to be driven in a quieter, more comfortable, more secure, safer car. (Not tipping over just solves one small problem of many.) Also any EV in CA will not be a "polluting car" because they are going to have excess green electricity.
@electrictroy20103 жыл бұрын
25 cents? Pretty sure going from 3 to 4 wheels costs more than that (especially when considering increased gasoline consumption)

Every time Autoline After Hours has Sandy on the show these days, which is pretty much the only time I show up to view too, I hear John McElroy panning EVs for some reason, while otherwise appearing to be open-minded, and Gary Vasilash barely hiding his hatred of electric vehicles, while ignoring the fact that new cars from 2025 [Norway], 2030 [UK, Europe], 2035 [California and ZEV States] and significant others will not be ICE at all. It's over you dinosaurs - get used to it. And the little inconveniences that EVs have today, after a few short years of development, will go away in a few more. But the pollution from ICE will always be will us until they are killed off.

I've seen many comments regarding Sandy working for Tesla. Unfortunately, when someone rips apart your work, sells the world your "secret sauce" recipes, shows in detail how you f-ed up some things, and then says you did some things really well... you probably don't want to then extend your hand in gratitude. And among the things you remember is not that they said, "You did good." I agree, that would probably be of benefit to Tesla. At this point, it's very unlikely. Sandy dismissed the question regarding the Tesla $25K model in favor of the 3-wheelers, but the Tesla Compact IS coming. And if the price point is close, the only benefit is range over safety & infotainment & space to haul stuff & 5 seats & weather-resistance.... the Tesla wins.

350 mph landing speed for an airliner sounded too fast, based on what it appears out the window (even sitting high), so looked it up. More like 120 mph typ, 190 mph max for a 737 or 747. Even an F-16 fighter which handles poorly at low speeds, lands ~180 mph. Some military cargo planes can fly as slow as 55 mph, so presumably can land even slower. I used to see them on slow test flights around Edwards AFB, where they appeared to almost float like the Goodyear Blimp.
