Is the fact that people want EVs the reason that their market share is 1% or 2%, and the majority of those sales are Teslas? Or is it that people want the _Tesla_ brand? If it's the brand & image that Tesla built, then you have to consider that factor separately from EVs in general.
@ultrastoat32985 жыл бұрын
dMb When cars first started getting made, at some point only 1% had cars and everyone else had horses. And most of that 1% were ford Model Ts. Difference here is that a car is way way better than a horse. While an EV is a lot better than an ICE vehicle, the gap is smaller. In fact it’s small enough that if you make a bad enough EV.... it’s actually not better than an ICE car. And most EVs have been bad... intentionally so.

Change in industries can come very quickly. It was not long ago that the big three cell phone companies were Nokia, Motorola, and Blackberry when one outsider, Apple, came in and quickly destroyed all three. The Motorola cell phone division was destroyed in 18 months. Same thing could happen in the auto industry. The rust belt might get a whole lot more rusty before this is over.
@DBlock55665 жыл бұрын
To be fair, substituting a small device like a cellphone goes way quicker because of easier and higher production rate. Trying to kill an established ICE company will not go nearly as fast because producing cars even at teslas unprecedented pace wont put enough of a dent in their sales numbers to have them running on lifesupport. It will take at least another 3/4 years for some of them to totally dry up
@DocWolph5 жыл бұрын
And look at Apple now, they are the far removed second fiddle to Samsung, Google, and such. Even then Motorola and Nokia still make and sell phones. Blackberry is mostly software right now. Tesla is Apple, and it will not be much longer for them to be shoved to the back of the proverbial bus and they will not really upend many of the other, if any of the big, car makers. In fact, if not for Govts getting involved in ways they should not, for reasons that were specious to begin with, those car makers would not really have responded.

@@DocWolph If I may refer you to an article about Tesla Seats - actually far more than just seats, also including important indicative factoids missed by others because they don't look for them. cleantechnica.com/2019/04/22/teslas-seat-heaven-home-of-teslas-cloud-like-seats/ Includes a Quote from Mark Tarpenning (one of Tesla's original founders ) in a presentation he made many years ago which is still so accurate (First Comment links to a very poor quality KZbin copy of the presentation) To Quote "one of the points he highlighted was that automakers had been gradually outsourcing more and more of their work for decades. His core message was that their expertise had largely been pruned down to engines - and sticking the different pieces of the automobile together. The most important takeaway of that was that it was very hard for automakers to shift to an electric future due to gas/diesel engine technology being: their core competency, their main area of competitiveness, where execs built their careers, and where much of the companies’ IP and capital investments had been sunk. However, it seems to me there are broader ramifications of that outsourcing. As indicated above, seat production eventually shifted to a semi-monopolistic trio. That limits automakers’ options as far as constantly customizing seats based on their needs and owner feedback. It also doesn’t provide them much opportunity for finding cost savings - that’s in the hands of the suppliers.

A THEORY... My guess is that the main reason Tesla isn't about to refresh the model S is that it's shifting focus to models 3 and Y for robotaxi duties. As Elon said, once full autonomous driving is available they will mainly sell cars to robotaxi fleets (or private customers willing to pay much much more than the current price). S and X are more expensive to produce but would be less useful as robotaxis than 3 and Y - so why invest in refreshing the product when in a couple of years its younger, smaller siblings will sell for higher prices than it does and bring in far higher profits than it does? When they got to the part about job losses, they forgot one thing: China isn't going to suffer those job losses to the same extent as the US and Europe. Their ICE car and truck industry is minuscule by comparison. They can afford to mandate a shift to EVs and the job losses won't be that great. That forces all the major international auto companies that compete in China to make the investment in EVs, and once they do they have to amortize it across all their markets in order to show a decent return on investment. The whole world is going EV whether we like it or not. The investments are going to bring the price of EVs down. Once EVs are cheaper than ICEVs, people will suddenly stop buying ICEVs, even without gov't mandates and subsidies. Total cost of ownership is already less for some people, but it's purchase price that most people focus on. Likewise with autonomy: the safety implications are just too compelling. When autonomous vehicles are 10x safer than manually driven vehicles, people won't even want to share the road with a manually driven vehicle, let alone buy one. The whole world is going autonomous whether we like it or not. The most politicians can do is mandate a useless driver to sit and supervise the AI. These forces are beyond the ability of any US politician to control. They can choose to go easy on the auto industry or not, it doesn't really matter. These disruptions have a timeline of their own and they can't do very much to change that timeline either way.

Tesla opened up their patents. If Tesla could be the battery supplier to the world, they would jump at it. That means any auto company can simply use Tesla's tech & buy their batteries. No investment necessary. However, car companies want something that differentiates their products, so they are loathe to buy drivetrains from a competitor. But if they have to choose between being "doomed" and just buying the tech, we all know they will simply buy it.

Sales of new cars in Ireland were dwarfed by used imports from the UK (we drive RHD cars). Cheap sterling rates, falling UK car demand (Brexit) and falling sales of diesels in the UK means its often better value to buy a UK used car and pay the import duties . The Irish new car sales in 2018 were approx 71K while imports were 50k! (and few would be LHD cars if any). So if we divide this by 12 its 5,900 for new and imports 4,100! Note Dr Data- your June data is skewed. New cars are generally sold in Jan/Feb and July due to car reg plate changes which means few Irish buy cars in June.

John kept asking what's gonna happen if ICE manufacturers have to turn to the much smaller margins of electrification. Clearly unless governments subsidize manufacturers either costs will have to come down thru innovation or prices will go up. Dealers will need to drop away and there's going to have to be a universal answer to unions and pensions which will be a weight around the leg of longtime OEM's.
@BjorckBengt5 жыл бұрын
Tesla margins are much higher than for any ICE manufacturer. They are not showing a profit due to their rapid expansion but after that, profit can be much higher because the value of an EV is much higher with better performance, lower TCO and higher longevity while production cost is much lower due to simplicity, as long as you own your battery supply chain.
@EnlightenedSavage5 жыл бұрын
There is a misunderstanding that there is no profits in EVs. Tesla makes 20% to 30% currently on their vehicles. They can do this because they are vertically integrated and making their own batteries. The legacy makers are dragging their feet and don't want to make the investment to make the profits.
@stanspb7635 жыл бұрын
These guys are so out of touch. They are careful to not mention the market leaders who are focusing on vertical integration. Buying subsystems that are common to many brands that do not differentiate except in exterior styling. The problem with buying external subsystems means costs are not decreasing with innovation or production improvements only benefit the supplier, not the car aggregator brands. Companies like Telsa which makes everything itself improves constantly each system and component so any improvement in component cost/performance goes to the bottom line of the brand. By next year Tesla margin per car will be over 30% and in two years will be close to 50%, unheard of in the industry. Its new computer is a completely new design and new processor style that is an order of magnitude increased speed. No other company has a competitive system regardless of the industry. Tesla's costs will continue to drop per vehicle while the brands that rely on buying subassemblies that only increase in cost over time. The old model that suppliers and brand expect to allow them to transition into BEV is obsolete and a decade behind. A lot of investment money now is really at risk by being far too late. Old thinking is killing all western corporations

In the 1920s, the United States Navy (and Army for that matter) was faced with what they thought was an existential crisis: The airplane. The Navy was quickly divided into officers who believed in the future of aircraft and those who didn't. The "Battleship vs. Aircraft" controversy dominated all wardrooms and offices where ever Naval officers met. Careers were ruined on both sides. Mostly on the aircraft side, let's be honest. It took Pearl Harbor to finally end that discussion once and for all. Now we have a similar thing: EV or ICE. It's fascinating to see these "Battleship officers" struggle to stay relevant.

The question about the oil industry and why do we keep needing to drill for more oil.. it's like people don't realize that oil is used for other things besides gasoline and diesel fuel.. The big one is aviation jet fuel. That is a growing market, and there is no practical replacement for jet fuel in the electric scene. There is no battery or solar option that can power a aircraft that can carry 500 people at significant speed. You also have massive consumption on the manufacturing side, everything on the planet is made out of some form of plastic.
@GoatDirt5 жыл бұрын
Better Plastics can be made without oil and the same goes for lubricants. Oil is a relic. Jet fuels don’t pollute as much as the massive number of cars and even the jet fuels are being replaced.
@kens97sto1715 жыл бұрын
@@GoatDirt Site some examples... Jet fuel being replaced by what?? As for lubrication.. no. Your way off. Nothing organic can handle the heat and stress of powerful machines. You think they're running hemp oil in a Model S drive reduction unit. Lots of heavy duty machines out there.. all need some form of lubrication. As for fossil fuel being a relic.. well it must be old, and not have been used for decades before it would be a relic. Since 98% of all vehicles are still fossil fueled, aircraft will be fossil fueled for decades at least to come. I'd say it's hardly a relic.... More like the vast majority power source of the world. 36% of electricity is from natural gas, another 30+% is from coal... So that means about 70% of the electricity to charge your EV came from fossil fuels anyways. Yes it's cleaner that way for sure. And I'm not debating that EV's are the future of land based vehicles.. within the next decade or so they definitely are. But relic.. LOLZ.. not really.
@GoatDirt5 жыл бұрын
kens97sto171 biochemical and thermochemical conversion processes are well underway for about a decade. To date, four pathways have been approved for producing alternative fuels that meet the specifications necessary to be considered jet fuel while others are pending and have the same performance and high altitude specifications as kerosine and other fuels for smaller craft as well. This has been solved for the past decade and is is already in use. As for lubricants, it’s necessarily that traditional oil can’t be used, but how much and how often is the point. 150k mikes on a drive train vs every 7500 for an engine, is not even close. Completely synthetic lubricants and hydraulic replacements for extreme temperatures like almasol, monolec, and quinplex have been around for a while and surpass ff based ones for huge industrial uses. Since these oil distillate prices have essentially crashed, it was hard to remain cost competitive since only relatively few companies were doing the drop in replacements. And just because the majority of planes use FF doesn’t mean it’s the only way to do it. Replace relic with obsolete and the point stands. Since jet engines typically are designed to run for 10-15 years straight, and are designed to use very specific fuels, certain drop in replacements have seen the chicken and egg problem of price variability and testing feasibility as well as second source contracts that limit vendor choice. The fuels exist but entering that market it hard for these and many factors exist that limit when an older engine can start using new fuel types. The reason consumers have more choice is because they have no contracts on which vendor runs their cars. Airlines, not so much If you check the ASTM D7566 Annex for approved secondary jet fuels you will find FT-SPK, HEFA-SPK, FT-SPK/A and a few others already in production. My point is that we have the technical ability to get around most of these fossil fuel based issues. It’s like trying to push an ever growing boulder up a hill sadly. Let’s solve the bigger problem of cars first, then we can kick jets and such next.
