"When I finally parked it(Bolt) at my home charging station, it had gone 322 miles on a single charge. Not bad for a car rated at 238 miles per charge. Even more impressive was the fact that I didn't really try very hard to get that many miles out of it. I spent plenty of time in traffic, which helped, but there were a few sections that I was moving along at 65-70 mph as well. No matter how you look at it, 322 miles out of a Bolt is pretty impressive." - Ed Hellwig Edmund's

The Bolt will charge from 120V at 8 amps or 12 amps. The 60 hour time for a full charge is at 8 amps. At 12 amps it would be 40 hours.

The price drop for the Bolt and Bolt EUV got me here. They're definitely making profit on the investment now. Love the bigger rear door/legroom, pano roof, ventilated seats and SuperCruise on the EUV. Keep the regular Bolt as cheap as possible. Give the EUV the extra goodies and then add them to the regular Bolt later on. The refresh really cleaned everything up for the standard Bolt. Battery recall put pressure on them to drop prices. Two wonderful option for any value driven customers looking to get into an EV...

Correction (19:54) Lithium is not a rare earth (metal or element). Relevance of rare earths to EVs is their presence in permanent magnets (though not all EVs have those), not batteries.

Thanks for having Sandy for a great discussion. As a technical note, the focus is soft on all cameras. Even watching on my phone I can tell the background is sharper than the people in the foreground. Someone tell Auto line to either re-focus cameras on the guests and/or check the camera backfocus. That’s the reason the image quality looks somewhat degraded, but it really shouldn’t.

This guy is in someone’s pocket. I have owned a Model 3 for 4 weeks now. We just completed a 2000 mile trip. We passed a few Bolts, most were doing 40-50 mph, I would guess they were trying to make it to the next charger. If you want range anxiety, I wouldn’t plan a road trip in this car. We sailed from supercharger to supercharger, mostly in the 65- 80 mph range. The Model 3 is quite a road car, I’ve never had anything like it. I guess I’m a fan man (65) but I believe there will be no shortage of buyers for this car. This is the guy who said the Model 3 has the build quality of a Kia. I don’t think so, it really made me laugh. I can get just about anywhere twice as fast, or so it seems, in the Model 3. The power is instantaneous. It doesn’t shift, it just does tremendous speed in complete quiet. I am very glad to have owned this car before 5G and new government regulations in the next 2-3 years. I believe it will be harder to even self drive cars like this due to autonomy. When I was 16, my parents bought a new Pontiac, I’m not sure they even knew the significance of it being a GTO. I can tell you the Model 3 makes that car seem like a bucket of bolts. Hell, it makes my old car, a Lexus GS seem like a bucket of bolts. The advertised 0-60 time of this car is something like 5.2. Having owned 2 Ferraris and 4 Porsches, I would say the actual 0-60 is more like 4.5. I know none of those cars would be able to keep up in the city with the Model 3, and this is not even the dual motor or performance version. I can only think the new roadster will be like the slot cars of my youth, the ones you could barely see, they moved so fast.

there was fit and finish problems with the first iterations of the model 3, they've fixed all that now. However the statements he makes here are really first impressions, he recently finished his tear down. He's completely turned around his position on tesla and their products, believes the model 3 to have the highest gross margins of any EV in the world, knows tesla has the best batteries in the world, really shows how great the model 3 really is imo.

Oshkosh annual get together uses the largest number of FAA air controllers of any airport in the country during the Oshkosh show. P51 ok to land land short, dc3 behind waggle your wings land just past the p51, they never inked the microphone it’s that busy. The was they identify the aircraft is amazing. Next time you go there bring a scanner capable of aircraft frees and listen yourself and be prepared to be amazed. I watched a helicopter fire up his engine the wind up the rotors from the turbine then the pilot called for permission to take off and was told you have 9 seconds to take and literally leaped off the ground to 200 feet plus in less than 5 seconds. You will see takeoff’s and landings that would get you angrily ground at any other airport in the United States other than during Oshkosh. If you’re an aircraft buff and don’t go to Oshkosh your missing out from everything from Kitty Hawk to the latest wide bodies.

Not well explained in the discussion. This refers to the battery cathode chemistry, the three components are nickel, cobalt and manganese. An 8-1-1 cathode would be 80% nickel, 10% cobalt and manganese. Cobalt prices are escalating

These guys are so fucking ill prepared, they don't even know what the car they're supposedly reviewing is CALLED! None of them have anything more than a "spin around the block" in one. None of them have any clue about the significance of what this car -- specifically the Chevy Bolt EV -- represents: an affordable 100% electric car that can be charged at HOME...for virtually free. Yes. Free. In fact, better than free. Here's how: when you get an EV, your electric company re-sets your rates to "TIME OF USE" or "EV" or something similar, and the electricity rates for your whole house goes down. For me, it went from $172 a month to $36 a month...and that's INCLUDING the fact that my EV gets driving an astonishing 164 miles every day. So, it's actually better than free. These guys have no clue. An EV is merely a COMPONENT of a total energy management system. Get solar panels on your roof and a battery in the garage, and your energy costs plummet. Once you pay off the solar panels and the battery and the car, all of which should be done in about 5 years, and you're literally driving and powering your house for FREE. THIS is the big picture. Charging up at HOME is a HUGE advantage over going to the nasty ass gas station. GLOBAL WARMING Is a thing, and people like to do the right thing. EV's are MAINTENANCE FREE. They didn't bring up the fact that you NEVER have to get an OIL change, or a TRANSMISSION FLUSH or a BELT REPLACED or any of the other 17,000+ things that can go wrong with an ICE car. These guys are threatened by EVs, because they know everything there is to know about ICE cars and all of that is now totally irrelevant, so they deride, they smirk, they cut, they chop and they chide and it's all just whistling past the graveyard: the graveyard of the internal combustion engine.

Can"t blame Purchasing if the design and/or design specs are not suitable for the intended purpose. Also the procurement methodology needs to be suited for the intended purchase. There needs to be a strategic procurement plan in place. Either that or just single or sole source and live with that outcome. Cheer and great discussion.
@dlwatib
@dlwatib 7 жыл бұрын
Actually you can blame purchasing when they don't evaluate the vendors to determine if they can meet minimal quality standards. But it's really the whole corporate culture, not just purchasing that's to blame when the project fails due to bad purchasing decisions. Purchasing should not be making its decisions in a vacuum. It should be serving in a consultancy capacity to the engineers. The ultimate decision should rest with the engineers. When purchasing buys something unsuitable for purpose that can only occur because there wasn't sufficient communication between purchasing and engineering. There needs to be a real conversation, not just tossing the specs over the transom.

Suppliers can have a lot more in-house expertise on something that the automaker might not have. GM doesn't have the infrastructure and resources to make it's own batteries, motors, etc. Letting LG Chem and Samsung (who have expertise and production facilities) build things to GM's spec, makes a lot more sense than for GM to do it basically from scratch.
@dlwatib
@dlwatib 7 жыл бұрын
Except that GM used to have all that expertise in house... and when L G Chem makes 60% of the content of the Bolt the GM label becomes relatively meaningless. L G Chem is surely making money on the Bolt. GM is losing at least 7 grand a pop. Which company would you rather be?
@rwdplz1

That's the thing: GM should have dominated this market if they had continued development of the EV1 from the 90's, but a few short-sighted idiots on the 14th floor thought it was better to protect the status quo instead of investing in the future, and now the company is paying for it dearly.
@eddiegardner8232
@eddiegardner8232 7 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't say they are paying for it dearly; they have the first decent range affordable electric actually being sold, beating Tesla to market, which means they probably will have the 2nd generation one on the market before the other guys. Usually the 2nd one is the one people are more willing to buy in mass numbers, being reluctant to be early adopters. Remember also, their "customers" are the dealers; the dealers have to buy them in mass before the customers see them lined up on the lot for sale with choice of colors and options; dealers are often not early adopters until they see other dealers making sales in numbers.
