But how do you convince such a humble soul to take command of his brothers? I doubt so many of his brothers would have fallen to Chaos had Sanguinius been the Warmaster or Regent. Glorious Hawk boy was so painfully beautiful. Calming. Easy going. Like Vulkan I believe he was the most human of his brothers. But Vulkan had a childhood of virtue and centered values. Of all of them a very human upbringing. Sanguinius thought himself a monster. Or at least a father to them. He did not indulge in the pride of Horus or the vainglory of Fulgrim. Thinking on why the Emperor chose Horus over Sanguinius, a thought struck me. It might be that the reason for Horus being chosen may very well have been a too human trait. That the Emperor was afraid for what would happen if he chose Sanguinius. In truth, it could take multiple routes along that path of logic. A: If the Emperor was indeed a bit more cold and pragmatic regarding the Primarchs, then the fact that Sanguinius was a mutant would take him out of the running to be the symbol chosen to rally around. He would serve as a tool for the Emperor's plan, and then be easily discarded at the end. More so since he failed to meet the standards of perfection of the human form. B: The Emperor could have been afraid that the genetic flaw in Sanguinius would present an unacceptable danger, or weakness, should he be elevated to Warmaster. That at the most inopportune time Sanguinius would fall prey to something he couldn't fight, and that all the grand vision the Emperor had for the galaxy would be thrown into disarray. Or, C, the one I kind of favor: That the Emperor was afraid that Sanguinius was too much like Him. That, for all the personality, for all the charisma, the vision, the dedication to the cause of humanity, that instead of seeing those things, everyone would focus on that ethereal aspect to them. That always, no matter what, the Emperor is defined by his god-like psychic might, his psychic presence. Never His personality, never his humor, never his humanness. In fact, the Emperor is simply considered Not Human, above and beyond human; even though there are times when the Emperor is just as human as any non-psyker. Sanguinius? The very same thing was pointed out in this video. Everyone focuses on his beauty, his regal appearance, his wings. He is kind, passionate, charismatic, and obviously possesses a tactical mind and dogged determination. Jaghatai recognizes these for a moment, and yet is still immediately drawn to Sangunius' appearance. His angelic form. Any average human would obviously be drawn to the same thing, the ethereal nature of Sanguinius. The non-human, heavenly, god-like aspect, rather than the human within. The Emperor passed over all the Primarchs, save Horus, because they embodied some aspect TOO much: Conrad: Too broken, too focused on retribution. The Lion: Too secretive. Angron: Too angry and wrathful. Lorgar: Too pious. Jaghatai: Too wild and free. Dorn: Too regimented. Fulgrim: Too vain, too obsessed with the appearance of perfection. Vulkan: Too idealistic and gentle. For Sanguinius? Maybe it was simply that Sanguinius was too much like the Emperor, in all the ways the Emperor feared. That he was too obviously unlike the average human. That he was too easy to deify. That he was too beloved; so much so that none would ever think to question him, in the same way that none but Malchador would dare question the Emperor. But Horus? He was loved, but not universally held above questioning by his brothers. Ambitious, but not unmalleable (much to the galaxy's detriment). Demigod-esque, but not wholly un-relatable to the human condition; indeed, perhaps too human in his flaws. So the Emperor chose Horus, maybe because He thought that Horus was close to what He wished He could be. Someone that humanity would follow eagerly, but not deify. Someone that could bear the Imperial Truth without being seen as something beyond what humanity could be. But, that's just my ramblings on the subject.

Personally I think with the emperor's foresight that he knew there was a high chance that whoever he made warmaster would fall . And between the three top choices Horus at the end of the day was one he could lose and still carry out his plans . Roberte was to good at logistics to lose . Sanguineous was like you say too much like him and with the black rage had a chance of being a I lose button . Meanwhile Horus while not the best at anything other than being charasmatic was 2nd best at everything. Horus was the guy we all work with that gets promoted a lot because he never made himself irreplaceable. He was always damn good at everything , but Lionel or Lehman would probably kick his ass in a fight , roberte would probably win a war against him while also doing his taxes . You get the point

I always thought that emps didn't chose sanguinius because he was aware of the flaws sanguinius showed during the imperium secundus. Sure sanguinius is a capable leader, but he is also a hands-on micromanager with a heart of gold; he's a guy who wants the best for everyone, will ensure that everyone is taken care of, and gets bogged down in indecisiveness when it means having to hurt someone. And when you have over 4,200 expedition fleets to manage being lead by a micromanager... nothing would ever get done.

I honestly think that the whole "Why Horus vs Pigeonboi" warmaster debate has to do with assertiveness. Sanguinius is described time and again, despite all his charisma, beauty, grace and charm, to be have an element of relaxation inherent to his personality. He's been written, even in this very reading, to recline into his seat. When Fulgrim has that little argument with the Khan and the Angel is present, he barely gets involved at all. He seems almost passive, almost because he knows he's loved by everyone so he doesn't take sides. Horus, on the other hand, is very fucking opinionated in comparison. They might be as good in terms of skill in different stuff, but Horus (to me at least) seems WAY more possessed by a burning need to DO SOMETHING instead of just be languid in his acceptance of his purpose. Sanguinius is very accepting of who he is and what he is for. Passivity to his father's cause because his heart is already there, whereas Horus is more active because his HEAD is there. Eventually, I think it's because Horus convinces himself of the path to Chaos. Chaos just nudges him in the direction because he's got that classic fault of thinking he knows all. Sanguinius believes in his heart, and therefore is incorruptible. Horus believes with his head, making him potentially the most valuable asset the Emperor had, until with lil' Chaotic glimpses and pokes his head convinces him of a superior path. If anyone has any other opinions, I'd love to hear them. This, to me, is the defining difference between the Angel of the People, loved by the whole Imperium as a symbol of hope, and Horus as the spearhead and thinking brain, driving the great crusade with a burning will.
@ericmiller2544 жыл бұрын
While i agree with your assessment of Horus, he is portrayed as representing "ambition". And also it's implied that the Emperor saw this sort of betrayal coming, but it was bigger and sooner than he had imagined...I STRONGLY disagree with your assessment of sanguinius and the blood angles tho They're the most tainted (or second most behind the thousand sons). They are some fo the least perfect legions, they are all flawed. All their origin stories involve failures of one kind or another, making up for a lost brother who died for them or whatever, and they all have the chaos tainted black rage. That's where his "purity" comes from. Because the blood angels are so impure in body they are portrayed as more resilient to the call of khorne which they are used to via the black rage. He is so warp tainted he has wings.....Their whole schtick is they're perfect on the outside to try to make up for the terrrrrible truth on the inside. Would make little sense for the guy who made the blood angels to be the closest legion to the purely demonic to put them in charge of his armies. It's unclear if E wanted sanguinius to have wings. But it is clear he wanted him to be basically be a half demon relative to the other legions. They are not the perfect bois, those are smurfs. Blood angels are more flawed than any of the other loyal chapters by a wide margin. That's why Sanguinius could never be chosen by E. Only worse choice would be the Thousand Sons As a brother, why would u get in between a meaningless squabble between your brothers? It makes no sense to involve urself. I don't see that little interaction as relevant. If anything Sanguinius proved why he would be the better leader. Sanguinius couldn't have been warmaster ever as long as he was chosen by the E You're portraying them as red ultramarines....Which is absurd. Horus' legion was a lot more plain and closer to the ultramarines than the blood angels
@lynnusuk20924 жыл бұрын
Tbh I see sanguinius more of great a head figure to recruit to the cause, but his gene flaw, passiveness and less experience in cooperating with other legions was why Horus got the role. The legions needed a war master cause they needed a leader that unite them and solve conflicts between them rather than not get involved until they gotten to the point that they start planning open rebellion. A example of this is with mortarion, he hated the warp and sorcery but he would still be loyal to Horus even if he knew the path they’re heading. He rejected the gifts of chaos throughout the heresy, only when his legion was held by gun point by nurgle did he concedes. This is what the emperor saw in Horus, he made one of the primarchs that hated the warp the most, loyal to him the very conduit of chaos, if Horus was loyal then the decision might have been a right one since it’d probably easier for loyalist Horus to convince mortarion that the thing destroyed his planet is a foe rather than the imperium.

Something else to note, Sanguinius referred to the 5th, as their old Legion designator, the “Star Hunters” but he apologizes to the Khan as one of the first things they talk about. To me, this indicates that Sanguinius would rather appear ignorant of the times, rather than ignorant of how the Khan would prefer his legion addressed. It’s little touches like this that I love, Sanguinius knew how to handle his brothers ego’s. It also speaks to the Khans humility that he didn’t take offense to either.

After Horus was named warmaster he said to Sanguinius that it should have been him. I dont believe Horus would have been turned againt the angel. It was his Father he had issues with, and in the old lore we were told that after Horus killed Sanguinius a chip in his armour was formed, his grief he felt for killing his favourite brother was ultimatley what weakened the chaos grip on him enough for Big E to get through. It was a story attached to an article in white dwarf discussing Mike Mcvey's infamous diorama, way back in the mid 90's i believe.

Sanguinius and Horus are two sides of the same Coin. The Angel, who is the good looking Mutant, never liked to stand in the focus while horus was the only Primarch who visualy had nothing special about him but his dominating aura und sheer will to do something about anything - no matter the cost - while standing in the centre of everything. Its the same with Robeard Grilloman/Lorgar and Dorn/Perturabo. I really like Sanguinius, but he is too passive imho.

You raised a comment about Horus's charisma as compared to Sanguinius's charisma. I think they are completely different types of charisma. Horus has the charisma of a commander and a leader. There are some people who you want to follow, because they are able to convince you of the righteousness or strength of their cause. It's the type of charisma the makes you feel privileged to join in, to be a part of the leader's quest to make his own moment in history. Horus's charisma is the ability to unite independent wills and forge them together into a single force capable of great action. At the same time, it's the same type of charisma that can reflect the will of those it affects and makes people want to invest their personal hopes and dreams into those of the leader, voluntarily aligning them with his (or hers). That's the magic of this type of charisma - at its simplest, it makes people want to be a part of something bigger than themselves. Sanguinius, in my opinion, has the charisma of a true friend, a peer, or a brother - a Samwise Gamgee. There is a distinct lack of ambition in it, though that is not a bad thing. It gives fraternity. While there may be disagreements between the charismatic and the people under his influence, at the end of the day, there is stability, support, and reliability. There is no pressure to keep up with a movement or an ideal at the risk of being left behind or betrayed. Rather, there is a feeling of comfort and understanding where people can just be themselves (within the context of peers). That is not to say it is a soft or weak charisma compared to Horus's leader-type charisma. After all, people can be roused to terrible anger in the defense of their friends and loved ones, and it's something we see in the way Sanguinius fights for his sons at Signus and seems to always has their wellbeing in mind. I think for a lack of a better word, Sanguinius's charisma is the feeling of home and belonging. Personally, I still believe Horus's charisma, as it is described to us (though not always shown), is the charisma that a Warmaster needs. If that is something he cultivated by virtue of being the Firstfound and spending the most time with the Emperor, then perhaps Sanguinius could have cultivated it as well, had he been found first. I think, though, that Horus's charisma is what we was made for and would have been Warmaster regardless.

I do like this take on Sanguinius. One of my biggest gripes is how focused people are on the Angelic aspects of Sanguinius (al la him being put in a leotard on the siege of Terra book and it being aplauded). People are fast to forget he was head of the Emperors honour guard because he was an absolute monster in melee. The very same reason so many primarchs claim they could not best him in single combat. His very sons reflecting this in the Red Thirst that Sanguinus himself suffered from. This writer may be able to capture that but he would have to be able to get the fury and savage nature contrasted correctly against his personality while out of combat.

You should do another excerpt from "Warhawk", the exchange at the start between Malcador and Jaghatai, where the Khan harshly criticizes the lie the imperium is built on. "indeed,it sickens me,but its not that some of it had helped,but i am glad your back with us brother-" a astropath comes in, guilaman is surprised "ah astropath,what message is it?" the astropath bent to his knees in reverance with tears "oh my lord,i recieved word from baal,the great angel has been reborn! he has risen again! but...sadly commander dante is dead.." guilaman and corvus were surprised at this,the angel was reborn? how? but guilaman would speak 1st "if this is true tell the blood angels that myself and corvus are coming,it is time to see if our brother...has truely returned." corvus nodded,even sheding a small tear for a brief minute to be continued....

Sanguinius and the Khan are some of my favorite primarchs. In my opinion the rebellion was orchestrated by the emperor but didn’t expect chaos to take such a big part in it. That being said the fact that Sanguinius isn’t wasmaster is proof of that. I think the reason why we keep getting glimpses of Sanguinius sharing bonds with his fellow Primarchs is to show us that Horus being made war master was to start the rebellion. To believe the space marines were NOT going to be eradicated like the Thunder Warriors is naive.

To address why Horus and not Sanguinius has to be answered. Sanguinius was a being that provoked awe and adoration in those who encountered him. Horus was all things to all people, his charisma was that anyone could come to feel comfortable around him. The thing Horus had in abundance was he didn't seem so far separated from the species as the other Primarchs were.

Something you kinda gloss over is what Sanguinius is talking about: how he's basically recruiting him to become a vocal proponent of the Librarius. He's saying "hey, if you like and respect your Stormseers, speak up about it, and make friends with Magnus and your other pro-Psyker brothers. Let's be friends and not have to chase your ass across the stars for a chat and a cup of wine" And Jaghatai is like, "whoa bro don't tell me what to do" but at the same time, he's totally charmed by the Angel.

I'm still trying to decide on who my favourite Primarch is, Sanguinius is a strong candidate but I'm still trying to identify with myself if that's because of his general appeal of being likeable and near flawless save for his rage once properly infuriated or if there's something more specific I identify with, because he's quite a popular one from what I can tell.
@jackfrost29784 жыл бұрын
The hardcore love for Sanguinius is not about him being friendly of pretty. It's about his true faith and belief in humanity. It's the contrast and contradiction of him being pretty and friendly and yet truly terrifying in battle. Very few if any of the primarchs before the heresy would have thought they had much chance of beating Sanguinius because of his Rage and his use of his psychic abilities to augment himself in a fight. During the invasion of Terra. Sanguinius fought in most of the worst fights. When not fighting, he consoled the injured and inspired the defenders in both speech and action. When he fought Horus, he had know for a long time that he would die. He didn't complain or have self pity. He carried out his duty. The true love for Sanguinius is that his is a contradiction in the best of ways and very few could lived up to a fraction of his idealism if they where in his body.

@@jackfrost2978 I appreciate that description, because I've noticed those elements too when you point them out, but when I hear people talk about him in general they mostly seem to only mention how great he is without specifying what makes them feel that way. @@Uploaded1995 His character is amazing. He seems infallible to those looking at him. And yet, he is acutely aware of the scrutiny he receives from everyone. And, his role of being a roll model. The red thirst is almost like a limited flaw that mostly serves to enhance and push the Blood Angels. It makes Sanguinius and the Blood Angels more potent in combat and makes them more acutely sell aware of their own flaws outside of combat. This keeps them humble and focused. Death means the most, when it's the best of us that is lost. Sanguinius represented the best of humanity and the primarchs. Which makes his death, that much more impactful.

1. Chris Wraight is one of BL's very best authors. I'm not surprised with how well he did this scene. He masters the Khan and his sons very well too. The Khan is one of the best Primarchs IMO in his attitude, demeanor, and the values he passes to his legion. It shows in all the BL material that he's in. Sanguinus? Well .... he's Sanguinius, the best of them, but not in a haughty or arrogant way, he's just the best of them. He would have been a better warmaster in many ways different than Horus, he still had several weaknesses though, they come up in Fear To Tread. By the time you get to the Siege of Terra series, its evident that the relationship between Sanguinius and the Khan is a very good one. Both knowing well of each other and very respectful of each other.
