I don't know about the original manga or LN, but in the progressive manga, it was explained that the odachi allowed Illfang to use katana skills, which weren't encountered in the beta until floor 10. And since Diavel was a beta tester himself, he assumed he knew everything he needed to about Illfang and was cut off guard by the change.

Also, Odachi is a Japanese sword, unlike a Talwar. During the creation of SAO many 'experts' were brought in to demonstrate their sword skills which were then copied by Cardinal. Obviously the Japanese Sword Skills were more fleshed out since the creator of the game was Japanese, and because Japanese still cares about their sword culture unlike other countries who have moved forward to Guns and Nukes and shit.

@@Will-mk5pj Once upon a time, I was one of the top sage healers in SWTOR... there were several guilds that organized raids who would actively seek me out, either for the harder raids or to keep their new tanks alive while they were learning in easier raids. etc... meanwhile, in virtually every PUG I joined there was either a tank that couldn't or a DPS who wanted to pull, or people who stood around in flashing red circles wondering why their health was going down so fast, and every time, all I'd hear from them was "our healer sucks" or "learn to heal scrub" etc. Come to think of it, far too few people died in the first months of SAO. If the people there played like the average person at least 50% of them should have died the first time they encountered an area or mini boss type monster. Heathcliff's rant at the final battle struck a chord with me... _"Do you even realize how many of you have died yelling _*_LEROY JENKINS!?_*_ its a lot."_

Arrogant hero is a jerk, tells everyone how terrible they are and how good he is, and tries to walk off. The innocent, kind heroine runs up to him and tells him he's wrong, and that friendship is great and that he couldn't have made it without the sacrifices of everyone else. Maybe she slaps him to show her spirit. Arrogant hero is touched by her spirit, or he eventually sees the value of friendship. You can see that from a mile away. The shot is perfect; Asuna appears right behind Kirito, about to say something very important. She looks indignant, as if she's about to say how wrong he is. And then we get, "I want half." Suddenly, Asuna becomes a character. She doesn't slot into the innocent heroine to the brooding hero; she's just as selfish as he is. She fights him not for his beliefs, but because she wants what she deserves. It's the best bait and switch I've ever seen.

Imagine, you make a web novel, and despite its poor quality, the initial premise is good enough for you to rewrite it a bit and publish it, albeit, it's still kinda bad. The anime staff does a great job, improving on the source material, but it's still considered kind of really bad after the first season, and the spin-offs made by the anime staff are considered superior. To top it off, a bunch of dudes online make an abridged, literally mocking everything about the original, and it turns out 100 times better than the source material.
