Great job on a big batch of soap Tessie! I think many people don’t understand that all soap is made with lye, or a form of lye (either sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide). The lye, when mixed with fats, creates soap through a process called saponification. The lye is no longer caustic once it saponifies! One of my favorite homemade soaps uses finely ground oatmeal and frozen goats milk. It is very soothing to the skin.

The lye is not neutralized until AFTER saponification....( usually 24-48 hours) , so up until that time you CAN get a lye burn.... This is the best for white socks & undies. If you get poison ivy or oak it dries the rash out. Honey please wear gloves & make it outside. We also used the cardboard cases that canned veggies at the grocery store for our molds then used fishing line to cut into blocks. We stored in an out building.. THIS BROUGHT BACK GOOD MEMORIES. When coconut oil (high in lauric and myristic acid) goes through the saponification process - it changes from moisturizing to drying (because of changes in molecular structure). My skin gets dry in the winter, so I don't use more than 15% coconut oil in my soap recipe, and I set the superfat level to at least 5% on my lye calculator. Lard is fantastic in soap. Shea butter is high in unsaponifiables - which some people find more moisturizing in a soap - but at about 7% or the soap won't lather much. I also like to make a 100% shea butter soap. It's expensive, but I only make about 4 bars for the whole year. (In fact..I need to make more soon!)

I really like the rustic look of the soap when its done. I recently learned that the chemical reaction (saponification) of the lye and fats gets rid of any trace of lye so we don’t need to be afraid of lye. Its no longer lye once the reaction occurs. I’ve been afraid of using lye for years but since I learned about saponification I will be making soap in the spring (outside) and each year. Just one more thing I don’t need to rely on stores for. At $5 per bar for a nice shea butter soap, it’s past time to make my own! Thanks for sharing!!
@karijaneify4 жыл бұрын
That's very true IF the amount of oil is enough to saponify all of the lye. If not - then you'll get a lye-heavy soap (which is why so many people in the old days hated Grandma's lye soap!) There are some free and good lye calculators online that can help you be sure your recipe has enough oil to saponify all of the lye. I like www.soapcalc.net. Good luck with your soaping!

I enjoyed watching watching you making the soap. I used to make my own and like you I didn't wear gloves because nothing affected my hand and i took great care. However, one day that all changed overnight, my hands dried and cracked, within days the skin started coming off my fingers, they were raw, After a week I had to visit the doctor it was so painful and debilitating. I could barely do the farm work or milk the animals, my nursing job was becoming unbearable. I was diagnosed with contact dermatitis, from then on I seemed to react to everything, latex, plastics, detergents, metal. It was horrendous, Then it was a trip to the consultant and allergy tests etc. To cut a very long story short over an 18 month period it transpires your hands can only take so much abuse before the body rebels and your immune system turns against you. I have to be so careful now, it can reappear without any known cause. I have learnt to control it and treat it with a homemade herbal salve and a barrier cream. So please take great care.

Here's the update. I used the exact recipe for oils and lye and cooked it up. It was slow to trace, but lightening quick to cook. I added my lemon juice too late so I have something akin to confetti soap with white spots of cooked soap throughout the bars but that's not upsetting me. I added 3/4 c of whole liquid milk as I didn't have any powdered milk on hand. Cleaning up the slow cooker pot washed up so many dishes that I almost fell over in shock...I love this recipe! They used beef tallow, lard, coconut oil, olive oil etc..and you still can. Soap is a chemical reaction between animal or vegetable fats and alkali ( sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide) In the "old days " they would use wood ash lye...which is potassium hydroxide and the difference is, it would be a soft soap...more like a thick "goop". Also, the STRENGTH of the lye was hard to determine and measure...which also is why "lye soap" has that reputation of being harsh. The way Tessie made soap, is the way soap is made. By mixing lye into water, and the lye solution into fats.

@@ladywytch129 don't add vinegar to the wash... Only to the rinse. Vinegar is an acid and soap is a base. They cancel each other out on the pH scale.... In other words, it neutralizes it, making you really just washing your dishes with water. Same reason why you can't mix baking soda and vinegar in recipes (though the chemical reaction is neat... It's not actually cleaning). But vinegar is a great rinse aid as it is a disinfectant.
