I've tried adding a comment but it keeps vanishing. Maybe it's because I tried to include a link? What I was trying to say is that I found a video about Casa Fermin and I was trying to share it because I thought others who'd seen Sarah's video might like to see this one, as it's a tour of their studio.

Tying in with what Sarah said about different cultures, Antonio (the owner) says that originally the style of the embroidery came from ladies' fashion, from France. He says it takes 30-35 days to make one of these outfits, and there are several of them working on it at the same time (the page the video's embedded in says there are usually 6 of them working on it). The jackets are visibly stiffer than the trousers and stand up on their own. Apparently a suit can weigh about 4kg. In fact, Antonio says that some people buy suits to display them in their houses, like some people display suits of armour. He says they might cost about 3,500 to 4,000 euros. That fits with what it says on another site (I don't dare put in a link in case it doesn't work and sabotages my comment), which says that's for a more basic version and adds that that figure doesn't include the cape, shoes, stockings or, presumably, the hat.

I think it'll be of interest even if you can't understand Spanish because you can see some of the making process (one of the workers is putting on beads) and some examples of the work, and how the embroidery looks when it's on someone. The jackets, for example, are so stiff with the goldwork that you have to put both arms into the sleeves at the same time (as the cameraman discovers when he tries one on), and you can see how high up the breeches go (almost up to the armpits).

Really enjoyed that thank you, and absolutely fascinating!. I would never have known that they wore Goldwork in that way - but I must admit that the idea of all that precious Goldwork embroidery having to take such heavy duty wear and tear (at times quite literally) made me wince a bit!, although I think perhaps ginger cat felt that his own natural "Goldness" was far more impressive!. Really looking forward to seeing some more of your book collection.

I appreciate this video and love your channel! I enjoy hearing you talk about embroidery that’s meant to move and be worn. Your observation between the beauty in the matador’s clothes and the ugliness of what the bull experiences is striking. It makes me think of what could be possible as the tradition evolves: perhaps creating beautiful regalia for the bull and maybe encouraging a new branch of “bullfighting” so it’s instead “bull-befriending” or something. Like the sport would be more about creating trust with the bull and bringing out the best in it (like how people already build special relationships with horses, dogs, and demonstrate their skill in competitive settings).
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery3 жыл бұрын
I'm sure I read somewhere that they were doing bullfights without real bulls somewhere; more of a show to show off the Matadors skills and their beautiful suits without harming any animals; as an animal lover and an embroidery lover this sounds like the perfect solution! As someone who makes my living from embroidery I can't imagine what I would do if suddenly I couldn't do the thing I was good at but yes these things need to evolve...

Love your enthusiasm Sarah. I watched a few of your demos. That lead me to buying your silk shading book and learning more. Quick question if I may - do you back every piece of fabric before you put it in a hoop or frame or do you only do it on special projects? I was about to shop at your online shop for fabric etc but didn’t know if I needed to get say calico to back my work while sewing. Love your book and this one too. Keep up the good work. Peter.
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery3 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter, I do tend to back everything yes. I like the extra supoort another layer of fabric brings; much easier to stitch on two layers than one! I tried a small sample the other day on one piece of fabric just to try out a stitch and it pulled the fabric terribly so back to two pieces I went! A plain cotton/calico works well for most fabrics
