Thank you for this. It is fascinating to see how the stitches were used to create the story. The designer was superb.

On my last trip to the UK from NZ we went to visit friends in France. I told my husband that if we did not go to see the Tapestry this time I was not going home until I had. This was trip number 5. Unbeknown to us our friends family had a house not far from Bayeux so we finally got to go. I was very excited. Martin knew how much it meant to me but Jean-Luc and Claudine did not. We walked up the stairs and when I spied it through the doors I burst into tears. Our friends and the guide did not quite know what to do with me. Well worth the weight and thank you, your video reminded me what an amazing piece of work it is.

That's such a good story Paula!!! If it's any consolation, the people who stitched probably also cried at some point making it, thinking they were never going to get to the end!!! I'm glad you put your foot down and got to see it x

Hi Sarah, I do not know whether you are aware but there is an exact copy of the Bayeux Tapestry in Reading Museum. The only difference (that I am aware of) is that the horses are geldings rather than stallions, the story being that the Embroiderers who worked this copy could not bring themselves to stitch the vital anatomical elements! This embroidery has a very colourful history in its own right which is well worth reading. It is on permanent display on the first floor of the museum, (there is a lift), and it stretches all around the room as it shows the entire piece. Well worth a visit in my opinion. Barbara

I think I am just reading about this in Clare Hunter’s Threads of Life. “In 1885, The Leek Embroidery Society in Staffordshire made an entire replica … All displays of genitalia in the original had been decorously draped … so as not to offend the feminine sensibilities of its makers or viewers” p.13. Will be putting it on my list to go see!

William the Conqueror is my 27th great grandfather. I have done a few panels in the same stitches on linen and in wool. I am also related to Edward the Confessor, so I really want to do that panel in which he is sitting on his throne.

I once saw a huge tapestry on display in Guernsey and my brain tricks me into thinking I have seen the Bayeux. I have heard snippets of info about how close it came to being stolen or destroyed, so surprise surprise I have ordered this book. Completely drawn to how the book displays the entire length of the piece.

You won't be disappointed, the detail in it is amazing Amanda. What tapestry would that have been in Guernsey then?
@amandapower9718

@@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery The Guernsey Tapestry is an historical depiction of the island. It is needlework rather than a tapestry, but then so is the Bayeux. On permanent display there in a museum. I was lucky enough to get called to Guernsey for work a few times and tagged on a long weekend. Gorgeous place, it’s just funny that my head turns a French speaking+tapestry visit into “was that the Bayeux?” Before I can correct myself. Would love to see the real thing one day! 😂

Now this is right up my street Sarah - thank you very much for showing it. Embroidery and history are two of my favourite interests. Wonder what the significance was of the only three women, perhaps the designer got told off by his wife for the lack of females shown, so threw a few in to keep her happy. Could be something as simple as that. Off to watch it again now.

Thank you so much Sarah ! I am a fan of the Bayeux tapestry since I have seen it in Bayeux while visiting my sister who now lives in Normandy ( I am from Québec, Canada). I have stitched a few projects with the Bayeux stitches and I am now embroidering the scene called « Les pourparlers et travaux des champs » (Talks and work in the fields, 23x27 inches). I also like to make contemporary projects with these stitches. I love, love, love your version of the coronation 💕. I have ordered the book you have suggested. I love all the details comparing with the 2 smaller books that I already have. (Sorry for my English writing but my first language is French.)

@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery 2 жыл бұрын
There are no records about how it was made at all, it doesn't appear until an inventory a few hundred years later. It's only an educated guess that it was made in England due to the skilled work that was going on at that time

I took a look (as suggested) at your video on Bayeux stitch (kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZ3XoGaqppZ-a7s ) and I was wondering would the couched lines have to be closer together if you were working with embroidery thread instead of crewel wool? We've had clothes moths so I've been trying to minimise the amount of food sources in the house accessible to them.
@SarahHomfrayEmbroidery

I've never tried it in embroidery thread Laura, but for laid work (which is basically what it is!) then yes put your stitches as close together as you need to to cover the fabric
