My first truck was a 96 Ford Ranger Supercab - I had to sell it back in 2006 and I miss it to this day. all those black plastic parts you can restore the color and protect simultaneously using a ceramic coating. The color returns to black instantly and you get the ceramic protection. (yes the same ceramic coating used for paint)

I great cheap plastic trim restorer I found over the years is "Turtle Wax Trim Restorer"......It's about $7 a bottle goes on super easy and lasts at least 6 months if the vehicle is outside and way longer if stored inside. This was another fantastic restoration video Sarah.

You're right about heating the plastics. It draws the oils in the plastic to the surface but actually makes them more brittle. Find it only lasts a month or so too.

Plastics chemist here-It depends on the type of plastic your working on. Some have oils in them to soften them a bit others are just raw hard plastic. Taking a heat gun to the plastic will degrade it slightly but if you're careful and just use the heat lightly, the degradation will be slight and on the surface. Do what you need to to get the best result and put some type of cleaner/protectant on it and have lots of fresh air to get rid of fumes so you don't breath it in.
