We call it the athletes triad for losing your period. Overexercising, under nourishing (from 'clean eating' that borders or defines disordered eating), and high stress are the 3 arms of the triad. Under nourishing is likely the most predominant factor here, although all of them are playing an important role in your hormone imbalance. Undernourishment is why you find you are more lethargic, have stress affecting you more and you feel the need to binge eat (I'm looking at you, big, empty jar of fruit & nut mix), and the main reason why you are missing your period. The human body is designed to eat carbohydrates. They provide the best form of energy to fuel your brain, and your muscles for short bursts of energy (such as plyometric workouts) and long term energy (such as long runs). Carbohydrates are big strands made up of sugars. They can be really big and branched, or really simple and small. The complexity of their structure influences the speed in which they are broken down in the body. Eating too much of east to digest carbs (simple carbs such as those found in white bread, short grain rice, sugary food/drink, etc.) can cause your blood sugar to spike, if you do this chronically, it could lead to diabetes. Luckily for us, we can consume things like oatmeal, quinoa, long grain rice (wild rice, whole grain bread or basmati rice), things that have a low glycemic index, and have a slow release of sugars into the body. Dried fruit actually contains an enormous amount of sugar, and eating it is the sugar equivalent of eating a candy bar. You crave that hit of sugar because your diet is restricting sugar in your body, and your body is trying to tell you something. Listen to your body, Sezzy! If you want avocado on toast, you eat that toast! Carbs are not the enemy! (It's likely you already know all this, I just thought I would say it for your subscribers too)

This is pretty much exactly what i am doing now too sarah 😄 I have been a paleo based eater for the last 2 years, i eat similar to you- big salads with chicken, avocados, eggs... etc But i havent had my period for 1 year! The only thing that changed is my diet- before paleo i still was eating healthy but had more startchy carbs... but i had regular periods then. So i decided to go back to how i was eating previously, and now my hormones are back on track! I feel SO much better, i have more energy and strength and i am so excited to eat wholegrain toast with avocado you have no idea! 😄 I also ear basmatti rice often now, it is one of the lowest GI rice. And it tastes amazing. Previously with my paleo way of eating i was probably only eating 150ish grams of carbs, which isn't enough for me. Now i eat about 250grams. (I dont really count though but i have been told to up my carbs). I actually feel leaner since eating more carbs. And my digestiion js also better! Complex carbs are so important for active people especially females!

I loss my period as well but fortunately I was able to bring it back and couldn't be more happier about it. What worked for me was eating lots of fats and carbs. This essentially lets your body know that you're not in starvation mode. I also started meditating, making a mental connection to my mind and reproductive system. This helped reduce stress and encouraged normal vaginal functions. Lastly, I stopped exercising completely. This let my body rest and heal itself using the calories I was consuming, rather than burning those calories off during a workout. I know as a fitness and health channel, it may be hard to completely step away from fitness but I truly feel that it was a major component in getting my period back. Yes I gained weight and I'm bigger than I'd like to be but I doesn't really bother me because I know that I'm healthy because I got my period back. I also watched this girl Audra on youtube and read her ebook, "How to get your period back" . It helped a lot and I got my period back before i could even finish the book! IA lot of the things I mention in this comment are addressed in the ebook. I hope this helped! I hope Aunt Flow comes your way soon!

I've been watching your videos for such a long time now so I remember the stevia and protein bread phase haha. So I recently discovered that I have hashimotos disease, hypothyroidism, low estrogen, Rheumatoid arthritis, NAFLD and just had my gallbladder removed because I had lots of gallstones. I'm being tested for coeliacs disease too which is apparently likely causing my digestion issues too! I'm 26 mum of 2, overweight and I haven't had a period in 12 months now :0 I'm glad I had kids early because my body seems to be going through menopause already! Basically I'm writing this because all of the research I'm seeing online is that I should go gluten, dairy and soy free! I haven't watched your videos in a little while but now I am back. You're such an inspiration to me. I hope I can get my life back on track just like you have :)

Hi, love the videos! I was diagnosed with amenhorea which was a result of over exercising (I'm a runner and was working out around 7x a week) as well as having too low of a calorie intake to meet my activity, putting my body in a kind of fight or flight mode. Still not had my period back after 1yr 3 months but back to healthy weight and calorie intake. It just takes time❤️

This may be a little awkward but please please please do a video on your birth control method. I myself am thinking of going off birth control but don't want to get pregnant. I've researched natural methods but would love to know your point of view on this. I know so many women have this issue also with birth control because the additional hormones can throw our bodies sooooo off! When I talk to my boyfriend about it he is all for bettering my body but it's also so scary. I'd love to know if you had weird side effects from birth control. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!

I havnt had my period now for around 4 months and originally I started taking the odd pregnancy test here or there out of precaution and complete panic. Now, since being to my GP, I have found out that your body fat produces some of your hormones...who knew! (Maybe everyone but not this chick right here). My GP said that I might be exercising too much and that I don't have a mouth body fat at the moment. But she also said that it's completely fine and nothing to worry about BUT that if I did want to start thinking about having kids then she recommended I cut back on the exercising a little (plus some other tips). I found this SO interesting though. I didn't know how common it is until I started talking to people about it. Love you and your vids :)

I lost my period for 11 months and just recently got it back after adding healthy carbs back into my diet! My body fat percentage did go up, but having a baby is much more important to me than trying to be as lean as possible. Its just not natural for a women's body. We are made to hold on to some fat for baby makin.. Hard but true. Love you Sarah! :)

Dear Sarah, I came across your channel about 1.5 years ago because I was into fitness and nutrion and immediately fell in love with your lovely personality. I've never realized you were suffering from PCOS - but maybe I overhead it because I didn't know what it was. Then in dec 16 I went off the pill myself (because I'm suffering from porphyria). I lost my period for 8 months and I've been diagnosed with PCOS. My doctor simply told me that they hadn't found out yet, why PCOS affected also non-diabetic women and there was no way to treat it at all. I remember being shocked and crying at home believing I would never be able to have a family. Research made it even worse because the only answer I found was that there was no way to treat it - except with hormones which I'm not allowed to take (due to porphyria). But then you uploaded another video where you mentioned by the way your PCOS. And I knew, it was meant to be that I found your channel. I would really appreciate if you could do more videos about PCOS and nutrition / starchs and especially the science behind it. Maybe you could even link the studies you've found so that I could show it to my doc as well? She obviously has no clue how to deal with PCOS.... Thank you for everything, dear Sarah. xoxo from Switzerland

Hi Sarah! Last year I also lost my period for about six months. I was over stressing my body and mind and that's the leading cause of it, but my doctor also noted it was the lack of carbs for too long of a period of time that may also contribute to it. My doctor told me though, I mean this was just for my case, that just because I wasn't having my period didn't mean I wasn't able to have children. I was recommended to cut my workout time and let my body relax and eat more food with carbs and fats & it came back on its own. I know once you'll balance the stress in your life it will come back & you won't have to worry, you'll have little sezzy heads running around one day 😃 good luck! Much ❤️love ❤️

While watching this I was reading most of the comments and it made me realize one really important thing. Some people commented they have been eating high carb and low fat and gained their period back with eating more fat. Other people commented the opposite. So why are we following all these "extreme" lifestyles when the answer for all our "problems" is basically just eating a good and balanced amount of ALL macros. Get enough protein, get enough fat and don't be scared of carbs. Eat healthy sources of all macros and you CAN'T DO SOMETHING WRONG. We need to learn to listen to our body more instead of following a specific diet. If you are vegan and it works for you, fine. If you are Paleo and you feel healthy, great. But as soon as you realise there is smth wrong I think the best is not to track anything and just eat what your body is craving. That sounds so easy and I know it's not. I do count calories and I do track my macros since years now but not stressing out so much about following a specific diet has made me feel so much better. My goal is now to fully trust my body since I slowly start to feel again what it really needs and not stress about food that much anymore. I'm mostly vegan, only eat organic eggs sometimes, but that's all I care about. Hope everyone is having a nice day xx

So glad I learned about your KZbin / instagram / podcast. I, too, have PCOS and lately I have been STRUGGLING with extreme hormonal fluctuations (which makes me feel crazy lol), binge-eating, I also haven’t had my period in like 4 months, lots of bloating, gaining LOTS of weight, insomnia, etc. all the doctors want to do is throw medication at me and I’m tired of it. There is so much health documentaries out there that conflict each other that I don’t know where to start. I figure if I can get my pcos under control and ‘feel’ better than that would be a great start. I plan to watch and listen to a lot of the videos and podcasts, but is there a specific episode I should start with?!? Or major breakthrough info I need to know? I feel like I’m living alone on an island ! Thanks

Hi Sarah. I've came across the same situation months before. I lost my period while I was eating clean and low carb(around 50g per day, mainly from potatos, sweet potatos, carrots, fruits, pumkins..50g it's quite low for me anyway). I basicly followed the paleo approach diet. (Not saying paleo diet is bad at all) I assume I didn't get enough carb cause my hair was losing heavily, my waist size was extremely small..and lost my period for around 5months until I recovered the normal diet (lots of rice,noddle,snacks)..I feel it's really weird that my period doesn't follow my healthy diet..I would slowly change my nutrition proportion next time and see how it's going!

Hi Sarah! I literally never comment but as a fellow pcos sufferer I thought I should add to the conversation. In December I was admitted into hospital due to my hormones and ovaries having so many cysts- the pain was out of control during that "time of the month". My doctor recommended I go on a gluten free diet, because it's an old wives' tale that it can help pcos and hormone balancing in some cases! and after eating gluten free since December, everything has gone back to normal and my doctors are beyond shocked at my results- my periods are back, my hormones are balanced and all my cysts have almost gone. I know it may not work for everyone, but just thought it might help someone. Essay over!☺️❤️

Sarah, if after experimenting with starchy carbs and you still don't get your period, I suggest looking into finding a source of zinc, gelatin/collagen, and different type of fat. A lot of your fats comes from nuts and seeds (chia seeds has only polyunsaturated) and I think it'd be better to get monounsaturated and even saturated fat. Your diet looks devoid of zinc as its mostly in all the foods you don't eat! Additionally, the clip at the end of you shying away from the sun may reveal low vitamin D levels. Since you're fair skinned you can get away with less direct sunlight, but at least some ( ~15 minutes not filtered by clouds, windows, creams around noon hours). Coincidentally, in addition to your e-book stress, the past 6 months, Australia went through winter i.e. less sunlight? A healthy lifestyle and diet (that includes collagen) may prevent those wrinkles from the sun that you're afraid of. I'll spare you the details as you can find better on your own time. Not any one of these nutrients causes your lack of period, but it's just more water in the stress bucket. If you know all this info already, then great! I'm just commenting based on my perspective.

Hi love! I love your videos and passion for being healthy. I'm a little concerned you don't have your period. If your body fat percentage is too low, your body isn't physically able to hold a pregnancy, so you won't have your period. It's probably more to do with that than the stress of your book. You are so kind hearted, and beautiful inside and out. You deserve to be WELL. Please consider that balance is more important than anything. Your liver and kidneys do an amazing job of detoxing your body on their own. You don't have to constantly cleanse, etc. Just make sure you're living your life without being too controlling of everything that goes into your body. There's often a fine line between being healthy, and going overboard. I've seen so many people I love fall into the trap of going too far. I love your commitment to health, but I'm just concerned for you. I hope this doesn't come off as rude! I just genuinely care about you after watching your videos for so long, and want you to live the best life you possibly can.

Hey Sarah! So, I'm a Bone Health Specialist which is basically I train and inform people about osteopenia/osteoporosis and how to lower your risks! Often women lose their period when their body fat percentage is below 18%. 18% body fat is the lowest constant body fat percentage where your body can maintain reproductive health. You may eat wonderfully (which is SO refreshing) and exercise regularly, but check out your body fat percentage! It could just be that you need to eat more! The healthiest body fat percentages are between 18-23% for women and above 6% for men! I hope his is helpful! Keep treating your body well! Stay happy :)

Really, really enjoy watching your videos 😊 So, you said that when you eat very low carb you feel very lean and shreeded, and I believe you're thinking that that's because you're loosing fat following that diet. Well, that's not really the case, and you probably look leaner because you're loosing water (I don't know if you're aware of that, that's why I think is important to say it). What happens is that 1g of glycogen holds around 3g of water, and glycogen is the glucose polymer stored in muscle; so if you're not eating enough carbs, and there so not eating enough glucose, your body uses up your glycogen storage (specially being active like you) and ends up loosing a lot of water (and also that's why you feel so sluggish and down, cause your body is using all of your energy storage). Of course there's more into it to talk about, but in the end of day, you're not gonna be gaining fat/highering your BFP, is much probablly going to be only more water retained in your muscle. Again, I don't know if all of that is very obvious to you, so I'm sorry if I'm being redundant, but, anyway, just trying to help. Love from Brazil 🇧🇷

Love this video Sarah. Also, I have the most boring desk job ever - reading tax law - and your Sezzy sweat playlist on spotify has been rocking my workworld! Thanks for that! And the hormone balancing struggle is real! Mine went totally crazy after my 2nd baby and I'm still trying to sort out what foods work best for me now. Didn't help that 2 colicky babies in 2 years meant basically no sleep. Hope you get a super sleeper when you're ready to take the mum jump!

Last year I couldn't eat starchy carbs or anything that is made of grain like bread oats even couscous etc because I was intolerant and got super bloated, my tummy hurt so much when I ate just a bite of cake so I couldn't eat it for 6 months and had to get carbs from fruit and potatoes. I was able to maintain that diet but I didn't feel good and i didn't have my period for these months, I also put on weight (which is weird bc it was low carb and high fat basically) however now I can eat it again, I got my period back and feel so much better and actually full after each meal! Just wanted to share this since there's probably a connection between carbs and periods 💖

Jana's Diary Carbs help increase body fat for a lot of people. If you have very low body fat (cutting out a huge amount of carbs) you can lose your period so your right!

Jana's Diary Try to be careful when cutting carbs as you don't want to cut out too many carbs as it's quite dangerous when done long term especially and it isn't just carbs that can make you gain weight. I'm assuming that because you don't include many carbs into your diet, you emphasize on protein and fats? If so, make sure your protein is coming from lean protein foods (chicken, fish, etc or tofu and legumes if your not about that meat life) rather than beef, and bacon - foods that are high in saturated fats. (these are the kind of fats you want to eat less of as opposed to the fats found in avocado, and nuts) so yeah I would say try to make sure your eating lean protein, good sources of fats and see if that makes a difference. p.s. carbs aren't actually the enemy (the good ones anyways) 😎

I love your videos, been following you for about two years and was caught on when you were all about natural products and ingredients! Sadly, the last wee while I've not been so into that but you are slowly driving me to remember why I was so passionate about it. I only wish I could relate a bit more to the food but in this time I have also been researching vegan diets and I am now aspiring to live a plant based diet. Keep up the happiness!

one question: my period used to be once every 2 weeks, then it got to once a month, and now my cycle is 28 days, then 20 days, then 34 days, then 19 days; theres a pattern to it. my doctor told me it's nothing to worry about but im not sure? its just so frustrating and sometimes my period is so heavy.

Birth control doesn't fix the hormone imbalance going on. It actually makes your hormones worse when you come off the pill! If there's one thing I suggest don't take the pill! :)

Hi Sarah... I have PCOS like you in 2015 did not get a period for 8 months. I worked with a natropathic doctor, I have been paleo like you for almost 3 years now...gluten and dairy free. yes this helps...what helped me restart my period and pelvic pain is natural progesterone cream. It is called "Protocol" natural progesterone. You have to apply the cream 10 days after you finally get a period. to your legs and butt cheeks...i know this sounds crazy! then stop the cream when you get the period....anyways it helped restart my body.... Hope this helps xo

this is interesting because I have been doing more research on food and I don't want to exercise as often or vigorously and came across research that has been done and it shows that not a lot of people are actually gluten intolerant. like I think in one study it was shown that only 1% of people are intolerant to gluten/ have celiac disease. So basically it comes down to the lectin in the foods which grains contain, tomatoes, all beans(even cashews because they're beans), & peanuts. Also, with you talking about prebiotics. they are really good to take because if people drink anything with 1 packet of Splenda it literally destroys 50% of the microbes in the gut!!! Which can be the bad and good ones! So Prebiotics are really going to help the gut. But for those people that struggle with indigestion, digestion, gas, bloating, difficulty losing weight should really look into the foods that contain lectins and should read into what lectins do. They're bad proteins found in tomatoes and other foods that cause a leaky gut. I hope this helps anyone that doesn't want to crash diet or even just enlightened people with random words :) sorry for the long post! love you and your videos!! :)) -from California

I am from Brazil, living in Sydney for 6 years. I was wondering, how do i do to get my hormones tested in Australia. Should i ask a GP for a referral? Or should i go straight to a hormone doctor? Any recommendations for doctors Sarah? Love your channel so much! ❤️

Your GP can do a full panel but depending on if your results are off or not you might have reason to get a referral to an endocrinologist. Or you can go down the naturopath road but still get tested first.
