Just so you know, and speaking for the public system, any teacher who describes what they do as babysitting isn't a very good teacher. There is significantly more to it than that.
@elyshataylor2762 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. She might be talking to the wrong teachers because every teacher I’ve known, myself included, is stretched to the limit with the amount of work that goes into teaching. High school teaching in particular is VERY demanding and hands-on. her comment on this seems really insulting and I’m sad that she thinks I just ‘babysit’ 🫤 I agree with Sarah on 99% of things but this was just really disappointing

I don’t think that it’s meant as saying the teachers are lazy or not working, but with very young students especially that a lot of the time gets passed with where there isn’t actual schoolwork/learning being done. Which is to be expected with a room full of students and school full of classrooms. So it does kinda end up being similar to “babysitting” at times. Like consider the breaks, snack times, lunch, recess, even waiting in lines etc. those are necessary, but with homeschooling, you are able to get through the curriculum quickly and efficiently. Then there is more time for parent/sibling interaction and possibly doing field trips and valuable real life experiences. No disrespect to school teachers. I think most of them are truly doing their best inside the school system and it’s not an easy thing to do.

@@Mhgoodmanmtg I was homeschooled (also did co-ops) through 8th grade and then when to a private high school. As a minimalist, most expect me to have a fully white home, but I always have colorful curtains or plants or my handmade quilts. It was fun to listen to you talk while you were making your food. I don't think I have heard of "Memorial Press" was it you said? Must be a newer one! That's cool you were a homeschooled kid, as was your husband. That makes it easier to relate to them in that mode then too. What type of dance did you want to pursue as a kid? You must be "allergic" to clutter like me.

If the person who told you that most of the time kids are in school, they are being babysat is a teacher, they should be fired. From the moment children walk into school until they leave, they are learning. They are learning to navigate social situations, they are learning from the print that surrounds them, they are learning decision making and choice making. Teachers also go through at least six years of higher education to be able to do what they do. The fact that you don't sound very educated when you speak about education does not do much for your defense of homeschooling.
