I admit bg3 sarevok is a bit odd compared to his bg2 self, but since he's a ressurected husk, I think that once he died, his soul got dragged into bhaal's realm, where he was prob tortured over and over to make him loyal again. Either that or he did in fact plan to overtake bhaal after beating durge once he became bhaals chosen. Or maybe his soul was split, and what we see of him in bg3 is just the part of him tainted by bhaal. Despite all that, Larian did manage to make him even scarier than he originally was. He seems shallow at first, but once you learn of what hr has been doing in the background for decades, you see he's so much worst now than he ever was.

@darkurgediaries10 ай бұрын

@HerrLokiZockt10 ай бұрын
Well I think this is not as simple as one may think: 1. Bhaal had already made arrangements during the Times of Troubles, when he was in the divine hierarchy, as he foresaw his death. That being said, Bhaal is only a quasi-deity now, and thus in the lowest ranking of the gods, but even so he is still incredibly powerful in person. Much more powerful than the avatars of the Dead Three in the game. 2 Bhaal, Myrkul and Bane himself had to strike down one of the seven forgotten gods about 1800 years ago (before Baldur's Gate 3) and had to find a way into Jergal's domain afterwards. Since Jergal was tired of his office, it can be assumed that he made it easy for the three to enter his domain. 3. since then it has become much harder to become a god and it can be assumed that even if most of the gods don't like Bhaal, an intervention of other gods, especially Ao, would follow in the worst case. The gods are just tired of mortals thinking they can do a good job as gods. And Ao is not an entity to be messed with, Ao is more a force of nature and power than a deity (he doesn't need followers unlike the other gods), comparable to the Lady of Pain. The exceptions to this are Midnight (Mystra) and Kelemvor. The former became the new goddess of magic by decree of Ao himself after the old Mystra was killed by Helm (in his defense, she attacked him first) and Kelemvor became the new god of the dead at the request of the dead and inhabitants of the Gray Wastes. Strictly speaking, Cyric would have to be mentioned, but his rise was during the Times of Troubles, and that was generally a wild time.
@darkurgediaries10 ай бұрын
@@HerrLokiZockt you’re extremely well read on this I see! Thank you for the insight, this is extremely interesting to me. So do you believe it would be nigh on impossible for a Bhaalspawn to usurp Bhaal?
@HerrLokiZockt10 ай бұрын
@@darkurgediaries I think it would depend on the time and circumstances. In the Times of Troubles it would be possible with the right preparation, Cyric managed it back then, but that was probably also due to the weapon Godsbane (actually the god Mask). It would be difficult for a Bhaalspawn per se. The whole fiasco surrounding the return of Bhaal was caused by the clash between the last two Bhaalspawn (the hero of Baldur's Gate and a Bhaalspawn called Viekang). One of them managed to kill the other, became the last Bhaalspawn and transformed into the Ravager, an avatar of the god Bhaal who was completely out of control. I don't know much about the origin of Durge, but I would assume that even if a Bhaalspawn and Durge managed to take down Bhaal, they would experience something similar. And if not, because his power is now too low, I think Bhaal still has a few powerful creatures in his domain that would serve him and then unleash them on the would-be usurper. Even if they survive that, I think they would be sufficiently weakened in terms of abilities and magic at that point that Bhaal would have a relatively easy time of it. And that's all assuming, of course, that the other gods wouldn't intervene. But I think it is possible in theory: Before his ascension to godhood, Kelemvor was also just a mortal, more precisely a deceased soul who managed to strike down the god Cyric and ascend to god of the dead himself (currently Kelemvor is the boss of Myrkul and Jergal), this defeat might ber also due to the fact that Cyric was not on top of his game ("Cyric's fear, indecision, and madness became his defeat,") and he probably also neglected his job, which further weakened his power. The question, after Baldur's Gate 3 anyway, is whether we'll see the Dead Three again any time soon, as the final scene with Withers implies that they're in for a punishment and the gods will look upon the Dead Three's actions with little fondness. But at least it's "easier" than killing and ursuping someone like Mystra. First get into her domain, then live with the fact that thanks to her power over magic she has probably disabled all magical items in the party and arcane magic in said party. I don't know about divine magic, but I would say that good and neutral deities would take away all spells from their wards if she wasn't able to cancel all magic in her domain anyway. Provided that you manage to reach her: Mystra has some allied deities and should things get really serious Helm would most likely intervene, Helm being the only unbanned god in the Times of Troubles and dismissing Mystra's (another Mystra, her history is complicated) spells and magic as if it were nothing. Any mortal would most likely fail at Helm at the latest. I only bring up the Mystra thing now because someone once told me that there are probably people who are looking for Mystra's stat block to give her a good kicking for the treatment Gale is going through. Not the smartest idea. The characters wouldn't survive that and Kelemvor and Mystra are/were once allies, and even if he's now completely neutral, I doubt the Judge of the Dead would let such an action pass so easily. Not to mention other gods who could lay claim to the souls.
@IanSenkel10 ай бұрын
The issue outlined are all entirely valid for trying usurp Bhaal. HOWEVER we already know the dead three are on everyone's shitlist and I think that depending on how to play it, it should be entirely possible for other gods to help The dark Urge to replace Bhaal. After all the Dead three done goofed so hard even Jergal who's neutral as all get out was willing to step up and help. So between Jergal, a potentially ascended Gale or Mystra you got Two gods right there. The Dark Urge has the best claim to Bhaal's throne and man I could see the player character getting the chance for Ritual combat. Look I just wanted to become the next best thing to Sithis from the Elder Scrolls who isn't nearly as calamitous as the Dead Three even on a bad day.

@alissapenridge751610 ай бұрын
Exactly. The treatment of Viconia and Sarevok especially reminds me of the worst parts of the Star Wars sequel trilogy and a lot of reboots in general that fail to capture or even understand what fans loved about the original stories. Old characters and plots are recycled for the sake of name recognition alone, and it makes the end product feel like a hollow retread of the originals’ greatest hits, or in some cases (like Sarevok’s), an incredibly petty and mean spirited character assassination. Including them at all feels like an unforced error when they could easily have been rewritten as original characters and the story would have been better for it. So few fans of the new game have played the originals so idk what they were even hoping to get out of including these guys if this is all they could think to do with them. I will say that I really enjoyed Minsc though, even if he was a bit dumbed down and was introduced too late to have much of a role in the story. His VA is super talented and has a great sense of comedic timing. You could tell he loved the character and wanted to portray him as more than a sweet, lovable brute, even if he wasn’t given much to work with. I would have loved to see more of him.

My favorite joke was something along the lines of "Can I go now? Boo is not used to this taking of turns." But I totally agree about Sarevok and Viconia. No point really in including them, only fans from the originals would recognize them and a lot of them probably had somewhat "good" or "neutral" endings in Throne of Bhaal so where they ended up doesn't make so much sense. It also clashes with the original story in Throne of Bhaal; Sarevok is only supposed to have just enough of a soul to live, no way is he supposed to be able to be a chosen again or any of that mess. They could have achieved the same feeling of nostalgia for the small percentage who get it by just including Sarevok's sword as a loot drop near the end of the game in the Bhaal temple or something.

@@erdrickcapet3945 I agree with you on the point of just including Sarevok's sword rather then the character. Originally I went into BG3 enthusiastically but then had the fact Sarevok and Viconia are in the game and their redemption arcs reversed spoiled for me. Now I don't care at all for the story and am only continuing to play because I have a campaign with 3 friends. Honestly I really wish nothing about bhaal or the bhaalspawn storyline was even mentioned as that story was finished. It's sad because I was actually kind of enjoying the story up to when I got spoiled.

The only canon thing from bg2 is the ending where we reject bhaal THE END every companion related choice is left to the player so larian was free to do whatever they want in bg3, i loved sarevok minsc and jaheira A LOT they nailed them perfectly, Viconia was just an appearance but once you learn what has she been doing in the last 100 years that's pretty much the viconia we remember, the redemption ending is not canon Larian and wotc did choose to make viconia stay evil, remember that se was a total ass and bastard in bg1 and 2 if you don't maker her good. The whole whining about her is because people LOVE redemption arcs and stories so they were pissed off, i can understand that completely, but you cannot say "this isn't the viconia i remember" NO it's not the viconia you want to remember, what we have here is simply viconia on her evil path, sometimes people forget she's an ex lolth drow like for real? she slaughtered a whole family in bg2 and was ok with doing heineous acts. Yes they could have avoided putting her in bg3 but it kinda makes sense, the point is viconia is different from sarevok jaheira and minsc in bg3, while their doings in bg1 and 2 are muddled and you can come up with anything from bg1 and 2 and the way they act still makes sense in 3, a good sarevok could return to his old ways after loosing himself, remember that 100 years is A LOT, and evil sarevok speaks for himself, minsc and jaheira have dedicated dialogues that do not make anything from the previous games canon, you could have romanced jaheira or not etc. Viconia is different they made her so that certain things in bg2 are canon, for example in bg3 in her quarters you find a flower that shadowhearth interacts with a dialogue saying that she in fact did travel with our bhaalspawn to suldanelssar in bg2 so she was part of the party and shadowhearth also says she has no idea but she is so much attached to that flower that brings her emotion or memories of another time so her good side is not completely dead... she is a shaar worshipper first and foremost no room for player head canon etc, i don't hate that nor i like that, they made a choice and simply live with it. Tldr. simply put people hate when companies don't make the choices they want even if multiple paths are open. for me i had both viconia and sarevok on their evil endings in bg2 and if they did choose to portray them here with their good endings i wouldn't be an ass about it just because u took a different path.

Hey there - I'm currently working on a video essay for Baldur's Gate 3, specifically one talking about its portrayal of abuse, and cycles of abuse. I was wondering whether it would be okay to use some of your clips in my video? With full and total credit to you, of course! I'd love to show off your fantastic work and your *beautiful* Tav! (no problem if you'd prefer not, though!)

@@darkurgediariesYep, at present I'm estimating the full essay would be about 3-ish hours worth of discussion, and I was hoping to use a small bit of this video and the Orin video to discuss how she, too, is trapped in a cycle of pain. I was also hoping to potentially use a few small bits from your Emperor Romance video in the discussion of how the player is also not free of being a victim - again, only with your permission, and with credit in both the video description *and* visible credit within the video itself / a link to your channel. I'm happy to send a copy of the script as it stands to make sure you're 100% comfortable with how any clips would be incorporated into the video, and once it's finished I'll send the link your way!

The BG3 Sarevok lore is pretty retarded and cringy. In the originals you could resurrect him to be a regular mortal, with him loosing his bhaalspawn bloodline, after dying first death. You could even change his alignment from chaotic evil to chaotic good (one of few characters that is possible in whole series). He, then, by the endgame went to eastern lands of Kara-tur to burry hes beloved Tamoko, where he gained fame of a hero(with or without changing his alignment). Seeing him as some lame priest of bhaal living under the city in hes old armour is just sad. Was expecting to see him return as a companion in a cool weeb hat and with a katana.
