I still have one giant doubt! How do I keep the background art style consistent with my character? Should I just split my background resolution into tiles too? Should I just creat a giant canvas? What's the best approach?
@saultoons3 жыл бұрын
You can achieve consistency through a lot of various ways, consistency in style comes down to similarities. These similarities can include, but not limited to: size, shape, colour, linework, perspective, or basically any art fundamental you can think of. Keeping character style consistent with background examples: use similar shape language, rounded designs, instead of sharp. Use similar sizes: assets are built out of 16px grids for example. BUT... In art for video games, It's more difficult because in most cases you want your character/interactable/enemies to STAND out from the background, so instead of similarities, you'll need differences, which bring contrast and allow the player character to stand out from the background so they can easily be tracked by the player. How to make characters/interactable/enemies stand OUT from the background - Character can have an outline, whereas background elements don't. Character can have more saturated versions of colours, or higher value range than the background. Really there are a lot of options and there's no real best way, its a fine balance between similarity and difference; the balance of contrast. I'd recommend learning more about art fundamentals and pixel art fundamentals (check out my Ultimate Pixel Art Tutorial for this) and then analysing games that you like the look of. How do they achieve consistency in style? How do they achieve contrast between player/background... Lots of things to consider! :)
@andremalerba52813 жыл бұрын
@@saultoons thanks for the in-depth reply! I'm just starting learning this stuff and I'm having a lot of fun creating characters and trying to animate those and just find out your channel! Your tips are really good! I'm feeling like I can draw alright characters already but still need to improve on the animations and need to start trying to do tiles and assets, but based on what I've tried so far, I think it won't be as difficult as the background! So far I hated every single background I've tried to draw! I think it's the most difficult part there's just too much space to fill! The limitations of canvas as 8x8, 16x16 for the other things makes it easier to get creative! The background art feels almost as daunting as clean sheet of paper LOL But your example on the video was really great as it was minimalistic but had just the right amount of details! I'll try to start similar to that! My greatest fear is mess up the art scale between the assets as that's one thing everyone keeps repeating, that if you draw on a different scale, things would look bad! I've just learned that the characters and tiles should both use the same pixel grid size to have consistency, but when I think about the background it gets confusing on how to set it up, for example for my character I can have a 16x16 grid and draw on that and also use a 16x16 tile and be good! But about the background if I just create a 640x360 background to have a 3x integer scale to 1080p later I think I'll have just too many pixel and I'm not sure (really dumb assumption from the lack of experience here) that my brush size pixel size will be the same, you know? Because at least that's how it feels when I draw the same character from a 32x32 to a 16x16, the pixel feel smaller on 32x32 so I can add more details and shading that the 16x16 lacks and those two arts wouldn't blend well together. Maybe I just suck idk hahaha Sorry for the wall of text! I'll check it out your other videos! Cheers! :) EDIT: Just forgot to ask if you have made any videos talking about designing background art for parallax scrolling!

My only question is what size do you ( or anyone else ) consider a " small canvas " to be ? Are you referring to like a 720 x 1280 or potentially lower ?
@saultoons3 жыл бұрын
For pixel art 720x1280 is huge. Small canvas for characters I would consider to be around 16x16px, medium around 32px, large around 80px. For environments it differs depending on aspect ratio, but 128x72 is not so bad. Typically we’re talking in the low hundreds and tens or lower

I've been wanting to but I don't know where to start, I'm considering Gdevelop because I have zero knowledge on coding. I want make a game using my own sprites and glad I have found your channel. Do you got any advice if I should start on the art first or rather making the game with like boxes first?
@saultoons3 жыл бұрын
I think it depends really. If the art is what gets you excited and you want to bring it to life then maybe start with an art mock-up and try making a game off that. But if you are more interested in the game design and development then a prototype based approach is usually a good idea before you commit to full assets. Short answer: whichever approach is more fun. Especially as a beginner you want to be having fun learning :) gdevelop looks interesting there’s lots of visual coding programmes out there too. Godot, Unity, unreal all have visual scripting but gdevelop or construct 3 might be simpler to start with and still very effective :)

What size canvas do I use so the image fits the screen?
@saultoons2 жыл бұрын
Depends on your screen size. Most common screen aspect ratios are 16:9, but there are different aspect ratios too. My monitor is 1920x1080 pixels, which is 16:9 ratio, for example. For pixel art you usually work in some power of 2 in 16:9 ratio resolution and then it would be scaled up to fit the full screen size, as 1920 pixels is a LOT for pixel art, a more realistic size is 192x108 for pixels, then it would be scaled by 10 for example. Give 'true 16:9 screen resolutions' a google and you'll find a list of easily scalable screen sizes

The process for creating interiors is similar - set up perspective, (usually 2 point for interiors, though 1 point perspective is also valid), then draw on that. You won't need to set up atmospheric effects, unless it's a very large room I guess haha :'D

Hello, it would be great if you put subtitles in Spanish because I don't know a lot of English, by the way, good video
@saultoons3 жыл бұрын
I would love to but I need a Spanish translator for that and current don’t have the funds to hire anyone! It’s a shame because KZbin have taken away community contribution for subtitles too :( Hopefully in the future but thank you for watching anyway!

Awesome tips! I find the constant cuts to the jokes a bit distracting though. You're funny, dont get me wrong, its just a little too much when Im super into what you're saying and it gets cut off by another mispronunciation joke every 15 seconds

Yeah I’ve mentioned this in my pinned comment just a bit OTT on this video I think :) glad you got some use out of it either way though

Teeny pedantic detail; "Homey" and Homely" are completely different words to someone in North America. Just some fun contrast in language use.

starting in black and white for just values is super swiggity giggity, i'm no pro leonardo but that makes a lot of sense in the ooolllll' brain game mainframe. help hopeless frog find homley home #forg. thanks
@saultoons4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the only issue I have with starting in values is the colours may not be as you want them when you first apply colour. But you just gotta keep tweaking until you like it ;D Like having blue toast. Thanks for comment TOAST

I suggest to include fewer bloopers because that much comedic relief isn't necessary for such a short video. It is more distracting if you want to concentrate on the content.
