I want base models, I only care about reliability and the engine and transmission in the car. I also prefer cars without sunroofs as they almost all eventually leak.
@LordPrometheous

@@fourtysix4646 What cars have you had (and at what age) did they leak? I've never had a single leaking sunroof. The only car I've ever had that had any water leaking in was a 1988 Buick Regal, when it was around 15 years old, I believe. It needed new seals around the doors---it didn't have a sun roof. But of all my 5 cars with sunroofs never had leaks, and I've never even owned a new (or relatively new) car.

SuperN0va In the early 2000’s I had a Grand Prix gtp and the sunroof leaked within the first few years, since then I haven’t bought a car with a sun roof but more recently I had a friend purchase a 2015 or 2016 f-150 and his sunroof leaked within the first year of being bought brand new. Confirmed my idea that sunroofs are more of a liability then a necessity. For a weekend car you only drive once or twice a week I’m not super opposed to a sunroof as most nicer cars are hard to find without one these days and that weekend car is always parked in my garage. For the daily commuter especially in the rust belt where it’s driveway or parking lot parked and snowed and rained on all day and night for a majority of the year, I don’t want a sunroof. For the daily commuter I want it to be as reliable as possible, the less options it has the less there is to break. For that car I would even take crank windows and stick adjustable mirrors if I had my pick, preferably with a port injected engine and either a manual or normal auto transmission, none of that cvt junk. Vehicles serve purposes and that’s how it should be. Get the reliable fuel efficient commuter car, the work truck (without a sunroof) and if lucky the sports car that can be all optioned out of that’s what you want. Tired of them mashing everything together in packages. Let us pick what we want or don’t be surprised when I buy a brand of car that allows me to do that or has what I want.

@@fourtysix4646 That makes sense. Our cars have always been garage kept, and when I did go to the office, my cars were in a covered multi-level garage. When working at home for a decade, of course cars were in the garage (wife is a homemaker). I suppose excessive outside exposure to the elements may cause seals to shrink, in addition to maybe quality control issues.

Big wheels + low profile tires!!! 1. Expensive tires. 2. Wheel damage. 3. Rough ride. 4. Noisy. 5. Poor fuel economy if the tires are wider than necessary. All that in exchange for fashion, and a POTENTIAL increase in cornering ability (assuming the suspension is set up that way) that is only meaningful on the track. Absolutely my #1 pet peeve. Even trucks and SUVs that pretend to be "off-road vehicles" suffer from this. The last thing you want in a rock crawler is "flat" tires.

Touchscreens are downright dangerous in a car. You can touch and feel a button or knob and use it without looking away from the road. Agreed. Making cars unrepairable by the owners is another lousy trend. Keeps thier stealerships and parts manufactures busy, using brand- exclusive tools, and now most mechanics wouldn't know what to do without a code reader. Many won't even bother trying to repair older vehicles without a computer readout plug-in. Do you Know what happens when design obsolescence is used to sell new cars ? People like myself won't buy new, even if we have the money. Between instant depreciation, unrepairable designs, expensive styling errors ( the fancy front grill IS the Fender ! Any impact at any speed will damage it and cost thousands. Or the exposed rear tires on CR-V, rav-4, insure that Any rear impact will also cost thousands,and shower the occupants with broken glass ) simply not interested in new cars. They're not 100% better than the old ones. So why does a loaded pick-up truck cost $50,000+ ?

It's because the manufacturers are now selling "safety" instead of driving dynamics, and ya know, we can just NEVER be safe enough, so lets just keep complicating things as much as possible. From my perspective, if the cars were simply more engaging/fun to drive, then people would be more into it, rather than just seeing it as a nuisance looking for a form of distraction while on the way to punching in on that 9-5 job. You also must address the mental health issues we have in this country: People are plugged in constantly to their phones that predominantly serve to sell fear/distraction, and now we have fear based consumerism combined with distracted driving, and we "wonder" why there's more crashes resulting in death, so, lets just buy bigger "safer" vehicles like SUV's / CUV's = safety arms race = higher cost/worse vehicles to drive. You know what: I love my 370z, yet, everyone (even Z owners) complain all day long about how it needs to be "more refined" etc. THEN, we look back: "I wish we had a Z that was more engaging to drive"

The high beltline is because designers think it looks better. That's really it. The majority of side impact protection is door overlap with any pillars, and the impact beams in the doors. If you look at pictures of side impact protection, it's really just high strength steel pillars and door sills, a metal or plastic impact bar running diagonally through the door. I mean, yes, more metal will absorb more impact, but it really doesn't add that much Another theory is to reduce the greenhouse and load on the ac system. But it's stupid because they make cars with tiny windows than put panoramic sunroofs, which puts glass at the worse part of the car.

It's an autobesity epidemic. Fatassmobiles everywhere. And they're less safe, too. I think it was from 2012 data that the light truck class (SUVs, pickups, and vans) had something like a 47% higher fatality rate in single-vehicle crashes (because of the higher center of gravity, presumably), and single-vehicle crashes accounted for 55% of highway deaths. -- Most crossover sedans look like engorged ticks. What kind of moron would think that riding around in a car designed to look like a fat parasite would be appealing? Someone with really unrefined taste. -- And D.E.B. B -- All the people I know who hate SUVs drive cars, and the reason they hate SUVs is because SUVs are fatassmobiles that block visibility. Getting stuck behind one is like walking upstairs behind a fat person. I think you are not telling the truth, or else you know someone who's an anomaly. -- I think the cure for SUVs would be to enforce the left lane ban on ALL trucks, including SUVs, and make the criterion a height more than 60 or 61 inches (exceptions for emergency vehicles).

One aspect of all those SUVs is that you also can't see over them when you're riding a bike or a motorcycle. 10, 20 years ago I didn't need to peek out before overtaking a car, because you had all the road in your view. Drop a couple of cogs, pin it, you're done. Having a peek around an unnecessarily ginormous SUV on a motorcycle may be pretty dangerous, seeing how motorcycles are slower to steer than cars. Also, even if you peek out, you probably still are not seeing the side of the road before the car you're overtaking. With a bicycle, the problem is even worse, because you're not visible to drivers in a line of cars. The front vehicle will cover you up entirely, and if it's an arsehole passing you too close, the driver behind you might not see you until the last second and possibly hit you. The cars need to get low again. Problem is, they won't unless technological constraints force them to, which is not gonna happen.
@grizzlygrizzle
@grizzlygrizzle 5 жыл бұрын
@@horrovac -- Exactly. "Unnecessarily ginormous." Commercial vehicles are necessarily ginormous, but personal fatassmobiles are not justified except for families of more than 5. Choosing one is an act of rudeness toward other drivers. Those who drive SUVs, crossovers, and minivans interfere unnecessarily with the highway visibility of normal car drivers, and for many, their driving style seems to devolve into a rudeness appropriate to their choice of vehicle. Enforcing a left lane truck ban on highways for vehicles higher than 60 or 61 inches tall would discourage a lot of people from buying them, and might nudge carmakers to sell more wagons here that they currently sell overseas. And given the higher centers of gravity and the higher fatality rate in single-vehicle crashes of taller vehicles, keeping them out of the fast lane is justified on safety grounds.

Mr. Geese, as an automotive dismantler and former mechanic, I do NOT miss power steering fluid driven pumps and racks as some of the other subscribers stated. It was always a mess, even when you're neat. We drop whole motors and transmissions onto drain tables and I can't tell you the amount of times they route power steering lines from the reservoir to the front of the car where the cooling system sits (about 6-10 ft of line) only to find there's no cooler in that area. It's so annoying, maybe they do it for pressure or maybe they did get some minute form of cooling thru the aluminum lines but it's incredibly redundant and messy. /endrant.

I just came upon your channel a few days ago and it’s refreshing to see others that feel the same as I do. Growing up in the 80’s I remember thinking how cool it was when I got my fist electronic dash on my Cutlass supreme and the cool shaped ‘Plastic’ everything inside and out of my new 94 Z-28 with the LT1. I was working as a crew member for a National Airline and I could not wait until what was next. Now I hate all of it ! I don’t need a electronic device to tell me that I need air in my tires for example. It’s just one more thing that can go wrong and cost a lot of money to fix, otherwise you got to sit there and look at the blinking light on your dash. They really are looking more and more like cockpits of an Airbus and spacecrafts. That’s the trend today that the generation wants and that’s what we’re stuck with. Or, if you’re lucky like I was. Buy a car that’s about 10 years old (One owner, garage kept, very low mileage) that has just about enough technology in it to make it enjoyable to ride and keep it up. Use to be that in America things were built to last and they did, but slowly we became a disposable society. If you remember when gas grills were all the rage and now you can get one for 100 bucks and within a year or two it’s rust and you toss it out. This is now becoming a trend with cars really. Cars are becoming disposable as we become a more disposable society. Thank you for the great videos you are making !

I guess different strokes for different folks. My first car was also an Cutlass Supreme with a digital dashboard. I loved it. Said it had “EFIS”. I went through to a VW GTI (terrible car) and then into family vehicles of various age and boringness until I bought a 2018 Honda Civic hatch. Although I bought a rare manual transmission version and it has no assists other than ABS, VSC, and a backup camera, I love it. I love its electronic instrument panel with gas and temp resembling the old Cutlass and the rendered analog tach surrounding the digital speed readout. I like the infotainment that allows me to connect with my phone and music. It feels just like when I went into my Proline 21 cockpit after decades of flying steam gauges... everything was clear and tons of information was available. There’s a couple things I don’t like. No volume knob... but I use the steering wheel anyways. No climate control... but one buttton brings it back and it’s usually on auto anyways. But overall... I’m really happy with the level of technology I have.

Disposable means more profitable and since the largest generation is aging out of the working class and tech is replacing jobs, fewer and fewer people have to provide more profitability to an already mature consumer market. We either stop using profit as a measure of value or we continue further down the road of one-size-fits-all disposable consumerism. But we can't have both or the entire formula falls apart.

I love my old car. It's not wickedly overstyled with hundreds of sharp pointless angles, there's no big stupid gross grill, the doors aren't ' dented ' in like so many newer models, I have a REAL spare tire and a REAL key, there's no distracting tv screen with menus within menus making it hard to find certain functions, all the controls have REAL knobs and buttons that are so easy to use, after 17 years I've got them all memorized and can adjust things without even taking my eyes off the road, and if I have to check the gauges, they're right in front of me, not the centre console, and they're simple and quick to check. My car doesn't shut off at a stop sign, I'd really, really hate that, there's no stupid sensors everywhere that can and WILL fail in time, ALL the fluids are easy to check and replace, there's no driver assisted anything, which has forced me to become a better driver over the years, it's far cheaper to fix anything on my car, and after all these years, my V6 still runs like a clock, unlike so many turbocharged 4 bangers that are crapping out faster than you can say ' gigantic repair bill ' and my 4 speed automatic transmission is still functioning flawlessly, and it even came with a block heater as standard equipment because not everyone lives in Florida. What I'm doing at this point is waiting until they start to delete the most obnoxious trends in styling and function regarding ICE cars, either that or until they come up with an electric car that will give me 500 real world miles worth of range with a 25k price tag, whichever comes first. Screw new cars because a lot of their ' features ' are designed to screw YOU, unless of course you actually think that a thousand dollars for a headlight is reasonable. I don't.

How does a manufacturer make any money when you take a care to a dealer?
@tboneforreal

Jeff Barnard Because the dealer has to buy all the specialized equipment from the manufacturer in order to perform maintenance. That stuff costs thousands to tens of thousands of dollars. @@smyk1975 Nope, adding the plastic panels does not keep the metal they're on from rusting. It just means that when that metal does rust, you have less structural stability because automakers are now using thinner steel and elaborate shapes to provide the unibody stiffness. The best thing you can do to combat rust, is get a truck with a full frame. At least then it is structurally sound for a while. I too live in a harsh rust zone and have retired cars because they simply could not be jacked up any longer, the jack would just go right through the pinch weld area for it.

I rather like unpainted parts. Why? They're good for practicality. My car is an old CR-V. I don't have to worry about rock chips on my front bumper, because there's no paint. If I bump into something, I don't have to worry about scratches, because there's no paint. If someone crasses into me and I have to replace a bumper; a, it's less than $100 for a new one because there's no paint; b, & don't have to worry about the color mismatching, because there's no paint. Don't get me wrong, I love the color of my car, and I like that a few parts of my car are body color, instead of grey or black as they were on the CR-V LX, but parts of the car that are designed to get damaged (i.e. bumpers) simply look better after years of use if they're made so that the damage isn't as noticeable, because, let's face it, minor damage will happen over the years a car will be used, and it's better if that damage doesn't have to be repaired for the car to look nice.

Unnecessary add-ons and expensive maintenance is the entire point. These companies don't make cars to make people happy - they have to continually improve profits year over year. The market got saturated with good cars that would last a long time and leave the customer satisfied. So the next logical step once everyone who could buy a car had one was to artificially increase the price of the car by non-optional addons, cumbersome or proprietary maintenance routines, and engineered obsolecence. How can a company whose only requirement is to maintain a profit make any other choice? If customers left fully satisfied, the customer would never come back and consumers aren't being born as quickly as they used to be.

harry: one aspect of the point i was making is that there is nothing in modern cars control wise that is truly intuitive. hell...just look at the shifters. there aren't even any cables attached to an automatic tranny anymore. your input is merely a suggestion for the government under the hood. same goes for the throttle(dbw) and now,even the brakes. all computer controlled. when these cpu's take a shit the car will be bricked in 5 to 10 years because of three little letters: NLA(no longer available) and DMCA bullshit. with each model year the level of cars becoming appliances(much like a freezer or fridge)increases exponentially. if a driver is looking for a true driving experience then the quest will be long,hard and most of all...expensive. all the tech is accomplishing these days are allowing people who,because of their lack of attention span,to get behind the wheel and wreak havoc on the road and others on it. tech in cars is more than a distraction because it requires your attention(eyes off the road)instead of muscle memory and the brain's memory centres. i could write a dissertation on this but this isn't the place. my opinion on this though is that if one cannot drive a car proper then public transportation or a cab is the answer...not that bloody tech and all the excessive garbage that goes with it. as for me...i will stick to my '94 v12 jag.

Ford designed the plastic composite headlight housings in the 1980's and claimed it increased visibility and safety and pushed the National Highway Safety Institute to require them on all vehicles by 1990 Chrysler Corporation and General Motors disagreed with Ford and said that the headlight housings would oxidize from the elements and heat of the bulbs and reduce light output Ford won and got their way. Vehicles used to have glass sealed beam lightbulbs which didn't oxidize and was bright until broken or burned out and they were cheaper now you have the composite plastic headlight housings that cost hundreds of dollars to replace and the bulbs also cost between $50 & $100.

They also don’t melt snow off like the old lights and people are lazier and more inconsiderate than ever as far as cleaning lights off or even turning their high beams off

Many of them the Grille, Trunk and Hatches stick out further than the Bumpers. If you hit a pole that is higher than the bumper height It would not hit the bumper and then damage the Grille etc.

Start stop isn't going to wear out your starter or cause any untoward engine wear or reliability issues - the engineering side of this has been taken into account by the manufacturers and isn't a problem at all. The weak point will probably be the electronic controller of the system (as usual). But yes, the jerking and vibration issues are real and very irritating. Thankfully you can disable start stop in most cars that have it but in many cases you have to configure it every time you drive the car...

@@mrjohnnyk no irony. As electric cars and renewables become more popular, even the cars already on the road get cleaner over time. On a clean grid, like I think it's BC in Canada with lots of hydro, you could build and run 4 or 5 Tesla's for the same emissions as a single ICE vehicle over 180k miles. When solar and wind are manufactured with solar and wind, and the cars are powered by it too, it'll be more like 10:1. And that ignores that batteries are built to be recyclable, and that GHG emissions are not the only thing that EVs do far better than current vehicles, especially diesel.

This is a very interesting discussion, presented very well. I agree with some of the things people are complaining about, many are very real. At the same time, being a retired senior, I also see and hear a lot of people complaining about these “dang newfangled contraptions!“ back in the 60s people were complaining about how they didn’t build cars like they did in the 40s. There’s always somebody, mostly us older people, complaining that the new whatever isn’t as good as the old whatever. Truth is, time marches on. Things change, such as concerns about the environment, and we have to change with them. I much prefer the cars of today as they are much much safer (while passenger miles are way way up, deaths are way way down) and pollute much less, while using less fuel. Of course, I have grandchildren, which makes me care about such things. As to modern styling trends, since I survived the fins of the late 50s, I can survive anything!😆

I would like to see all safety mandates subjected to a cost-benefit analysis. For every life a seatbelt saves, the cost is around $60 thousand, considering all the money paid for every car to have them. For every life an airbag saves, the cost is about $2 million. (From an analysis done by Freakanomics economist Steve Levitt.) How many other lives could be saved if that 2 million were allocated toward more cost-effective lifesaving measures? A lot of what makes newer cars safer is crush zones, roll cages, and collapsible steering columns, and these don't have to be expensive. Screw the air bags.

Also, as most of you statistically minded types conveniently forget, it’s very hard to measure the cost of 20,000 deaths a year to factor into your cost benefit analysis. As to “marginally successful “safety regulations, I gather that you haven’t bothered to check highway safety statistics over the last 20 or 30 years.

@@itsalgud1459 -- Guilty as charged, and proud of it. In the real world, money doesn't grow on trees. And other resources are finite. I'm not a fan of the "If it saves one life..." and "It's for the children" arguments, because they often amount to virtue signalling and lead to emotion-driven misallocations that do more harm than good. Utopian states that focus on safety and security at the expense of liberty and reason historically go broke or end up in genocide. -- Actually I'm quite familiar with highway safety statistics over the past few decades. I'm also familiar with the stats for hospital deaths due to errors, which outweigh all highway deaths by a factor of about 12. Saving lives requires choices and allocations. -- Light trucks (SUVs, pickups, and vans) had, in 2012, a 47% higher fatality rate than cars in single-vehicle crashes, presumably due to their higher centers of gravity. Single-vehicle crashes accounted for 55% of all highway deaths. Shouldn't we do something to discourage non-essential SUV purchases, like extending the left-lane ban on highways to light trucks? That could discourage a lot of people from buying SUVs, cost virtually nothing, and even generate revenue. -- As cars become more complicated, they become more expensive to fix, and more disposable. How much environmental damage results from having to make new cars when old ones might have been kept running? And how much fuel efficiency is lost, now that an economy car today weighs about twice what an economy car weighed 40 years ago? It's all about choices and consequences. Sentimental utopianism is no way to run a country.

There are times when you are at a stop and need to pull out into traffic, or you' re stopped in a traffic circle waiting to merge then suddenly you have to wait a couple seconds for everything to start. It's really a safety concern and I don't know why this was never brought up before this technology was implemented. Something else you mentioned is that in a place like Chicago where you have standstill traffic it may be an advantage- I don't know if i agree with that, because usually the traffic is creeping and not at a complete standstill. I hate it, although both my vehicles have a button to override it, I need to press it each time I start the car. There should be a universal lockout that would allow you to preserve that setting. By the way- well done videos!- interesting points, I don't completely agree with everything, but that's ok, everyone has unique perspectives.
