Stuff I learned Today: A: 10 inches is huge. B: Stool removal is a thing. C: Jack doesn't wanna die in a FWD, four cylinder pickup truck. D: Ford makes a pretty sweet small little pickup truck that's fast, fun to drive, affordable, and doesn't completely suck on the interior.

@@GIGABACHI That's all relative with today's hyper-inflation. I specked one out with just about every available option (not including stuff like tents and ice fishing shanties) and it came in a hair under $40,000. The small town dealer where I live isn't gouging customers with huge mark-ups on hot vehicles, so aside from maybe having to wait six months for delivery, I could still get it for a reasonable price if I wanted one.

It's new and popular, plus all vehicles are in short supply right now. Give it a year or two and prices should settle down. I'm impressed Ford priced it so low, given the prices of other trucks. I suspect they have a lit of manufacturing capacity for this, or will when things settle down, and have decided thia will be a high-volume model, now that they aren't selling most cars. It and the Blazer(s) and Escape need to sell hundreds of thousands of units.

This is the little truck that most home owners' and small businesses' need. The hybrid fwd just makes a heck of a lot of sense. If you live in a muddy snowy area then AWD makes sense 50% of year. However, a good set of trail tires on a FWD and its height may fit most people's needs. I'm a little old school in the sense if you don't like the radio then buy new door speakers and mini amp.
@Turb0Yoda
@Turb0Yoda 2 жыл бұрын
Downside is on newer cars you have to factor in factory integration to make it sound worth a damn and that tends to be $$$$, between hardware and the knowledge needed to set it up. It looks like this is a standard ish DDIN but who knows if metra/scosche will have a kit anytime soon
@yt310yt

@nodak81
@nodak81 2 жыл бұрын
Even if the radio sounds like crap, I just leave it alone. Too much of a pain in the ass to mess with modern cars. The speakers are always some bizarre shape with even weirder mounting that requires you to drill holes or something to mount aftermarket stuff. Besides I prefer my cars bone stock if possible, just makes everything easier in the long run.
@Turb0Yoda
@Turb0Yoda 2 жыл бұрын
@@yt310yt yeah but that doesn’t get rid of factory EQ or anything- it’ll sound like crap most of the time. Companies always spend too much time EQing the shit out of the stock drivers to make them passable - the labor cost involved in tuning is a 1 time thing, and the savings on the drivers multiplies rapidly
@markmiller3279
@markmiller3279 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but Mark is fussy about audio and finds this acceptable if the mid and treble are bunped up a bit. That suggests the bass is exaggerated, but if it's that easy to deal with, without new speakers and amps, it's decent enough for a vehicle at this price. I'd settle for that in most moderately-priced cars.

Great review as always!...Picked up my Maverick Hybrid XLT last month for $23.6k MSRP (called around for ~3 weeks, asking dealers to call me if someone backed out of an order) and I'm loving it as a little company pickup for my real estate rentals business. Getting 40+ mpg in the city and 35 on the hwy is a nice change from the larger GMC Sierra and Tacoma TRD I had previously. Easily able to carry all of my tools and replacement parts under a bed cover in the back, plus the front interior space feels more roomy than the Tacoma. The back under-seat seat storage is a little tighter but still very good for a couple of small tool bags/bits and some straps/tarps. You also have some storage behind the back seats as well and another storage compartment is built into the side of the bed. The top of the headliner/windscreen is much further away vs the Tacoma and the seating position is lower, which in turn makes the cabin feel more spacious.. For the price I don't see anything even remotely comparable at this point in time. My only hope is it remains reliable. So far so good! Very impressed, great job by Ford on this one.

Turbo aside, they were following in the footsteps of many other automakers. Car-based trucks go back to the early days of standardized car body styles, when pickups were simply one more style of car. My dad's first vehicle was an early-Thirties Ford Model A pickup. Later we got the Ranchero and El Camino, but what mostly distinguished them was car-like styling at a time when pickups had gotten taller and less like cars. The fashion for those waned in the 1970s, except in Australia, where "utes" remained popular. All Subaru did was bring back a body style that had gone in and out of popularity, this tine with a turbo engine. That was just the way the industry was going at the time, not some major innovation.

I think it has to do with price. The Ridgeline costs as much as a loaded midsize or stripped down full size truck. The Maverick is priced below a midsize truck which makes sense and is more reasonable.
@andrewziolkowski386
@andrewziolkowski386 2 жыл бұрын
I think the biggest issue with Ridgelines is that they are priced similar to an F-150, get similar gas mileage, but are less capable for truck stuff. The Maverick is much cheaper, similar price to a civic and more efficient than a Ridgeline or full size truck. I don't think many people are expecting F-150 hauling and towing capability from a Maverick since they are significantly cheaper. If the Ridgeline was cheaper, I think people would have different expectations.

I have a Ridgeline. It is a nice bed utility vehicle. A truck it is not. I call it my gentleman farmer’s pick-up. Kind of like what a Connecticut Mercedes Benz “station wagon” was in the old days. It was actually for the wife on the rare occasions she had to do shopping herself… 😊

I'm not following how price/value determines whether a vehicles is considered a "truck" or not. If its value based, are near $100k pickups no longer considered "trucks?" Instead, could this discrepancy be a Honda vs. Ford bias people have (and potentially don't want to admit)? Maybe because Ford is a more traditional truck manufacture compared to Honda?

Seems like a solid entry level truck. The ecoboost 4 seems like it been somewhat reliable over the last several years and any early ST engine problems have been solved. The hybrid may work for short term ownership but after warranty ends they risk being expensive to repair if any part of the hybrid system fails. I’d prefer this truck in a NA 6 cylinder to get the most trouble free miles from personally.
@MylesV
@MylesV 2 жыл бұрын
Hybrid battery is covered for 8 years IIRC, if the last couple decades of Toyota hybrids have told us anything then the hybrid Maverick shouldn't be too costly outside of warranty, the hybrid system used by Ford is similar to the one Toyota uses. Lots of aftermarket battery options are available for Toyotas for around $1k or so which isn't bad, hopefully the same will be the case for the Maverick in 10 or so years when they start needing new batteries. Normally the other hybrid components are trouble free, the e-CVT has less to go wrong vs a conventional automatic and the engine sees a more conservative use window so theoretically it should last longer with no troubles vs the non hybrid.
