Hey Dean, happy you are well and looks like we made it through another sweltering summer. Looks like AL Gore might have been partially correct about the whole global warming thing after all? A little late but we are definitely getting warmer! Ya know almost every time someone has taken a saw on loan you could take the chain and throw it away when the saw was returned. That is one of the common reasons why I go through chains, then it's the bark and debris in the tree itself. If you use a saw enough it is a huge savings in many ways to make your own chain. Time money and availability are just a few reasons. You always have a spare ready to go and that is nice insurance to have for sure! Happy to see ya here bud, me Mel and the kids are doing well and thankfully adjusting to some cooler temps! Very happy to be working in cooler temperatures for a change. Great to always hear from ya Dean, take care bud thanks as always , pass it along because someone needs to be capable too. Be well sir! Ric

I absolutely hate not having what you need when you need it, it is a simple skill like this which can serve several purposes. Add in the fact it saves you time convenience along with cold hard cash, that is a win in my book! There are several ways you can assemble a saw chain this in my opinion is almost full proof once you have some practice. Using a ball peen hammer and a punch along with the anvil you can do the same thing but is much more delicate and prone to damaging the chain but is the least costly for entry! Hope this helps! All the best! Ric

I've got an echo timberwolf 20" 3/8 0.50 My bar is fairly worn. I can't seem to find 0.58 in my area. Would this get more life from my bar to make them in the larger chain size? Are the harbor freight chain tools any good for the $?

Typically the thickness of the drivers will add life and usability to the chain structure. You have to consider it is more material but also can be working in opposite also. If it is thicker and bigger it also means it will take longer to cool down. You have to recognize the signs of overheating and non lubrication of the chain and bar, smoke, discoloration smell and heat. These are all signs you have a problem that can destroy equipment or start a fire. If you watch the video about the Farmmac f380 saw you will see the log smokes and embers at a certain point every time I pass, it is because it was so dry the heat from the exhaust started the exchange. My point is yes it can help but it goes both directions. As for the harbor freight tools, the ones I use came from Amazon and were the least expensive and have served me for several years and hundreds of chains. Purchase the warranty if you have concerns and you are covered but. Have some patience and know you will make some mistakes learning how to do this but you will get it figured out, it truly is as simple as you saw and can make along with save you money.
